In a span of 10 minutes today I received a call 1.to lower my Comcast bill,2.an email saying my Amazon account was suspended and 3.an email request to help someone out who needed to get a gift card from Walmart. All I had to do was 1. give them the number of my credit card used for my account in order to lower bill( anew variation of lowering my interest rate on said card) and 2. just click on email and sign into my acct and 3. go out and buy gift card from Walmart and read the numbers back so he could give them out and of course with a promise to pay me back when he returned here. The problem is the calls and the emails look so official that if you don't notice the addresss on them you could get caught up.BEWARE and be careful.

I know it's been said, but "common sense", or lack thereof, will dictate if you will fall for the lies of others. If you can avoid greed you'll do pretty well with scammers.

So, you only got 2?

I (and I suspect most of us) get a couple of dozen a day. I get them from Wells Fargo, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, (never had an account any of those places, US Post Office (something about my package is ready to be shipped), and several others.

Not to mention the couple from the UK who won 100 million dollars and wants to give me some. And the multi millionaire lady from Indiana whose husband just passed away and now she needs help managing her funds.

Don't accept phone calls from someone you don't know. As for the emails, just swipe to the left.

Once those millions from that Nigerian Prince hits my account I will hire someone to answer those scam calls. That money should here any day now. Yep! Any day!

There is a channel on YouTube that consists of a scammer who scams Indian scammers. Hacks into their systems and deletes their files, accesses their closed circuit tv’s and laptop cameras, interdicts phone calls to victims to warn them, sends glitter bombs to call centers, etc. Hilarious results. Seems that authorities in India ignore these criminals. Seems like authorities on USA ignores them too (???). Would like to think we could be doing more to close down these foreign, and domestic, fraudulent operations.

I just got a call yesterday from (718) 922-8519 claiming to be Amazon. A robocall stating that a $981 order was place for an I-Phone. If the order was not mine to hit number 1.
I hung up and call Amazon. They looked up my past orders and said they showed no such order. It only took a few minutes. That was followed up by an e-mail thanking me for reporting the incident. I called back the number and it was just a busy signal.

My suggestion if you get a suspicions call hang up and call the company direct, Amazon, a Credit card company, whatever. It only takes about 5 minutes, and you'll save yourself a lot of headaches.

I NEVER respond to an unsolicited call or email. If it looks legit I will call Customer Service of the business in question and verify it that way.

Would you be interested in buying stock in the Chitty Chatty Bridge? At a deep discount?
The problem with these scammers is that sometimes they are successful. Some of the victims are the people you would least likely expect to fall for the schemes. Stay vigilant.

Spam calls?? I rarely have any.

How to get rid of spam calls:
1) Ditch your landline. Those numbers are well known and sold.

2) Get a mobile number that is ONLY used for very close family and friends. Never give that number to any business, bank, insurance company, etc.

3) Get a free google voice number and link that number to your mobile number so it automatically rings on your mobile phone when you are called. This is the number you give out to everyone who is NOT family & close friends

4) Turn on any scam call service, that your provider has. For T-mobile, download and enable their free ā€œScamshieldā€ app. It blocks 95% of my scam calls (and since it is app based, it all blocks scam calls coming in on my google voice number)

5) If you want a final layer of protection, turn on ā€œSilence Unknown Callersā€ on your iphone. This will silence all calls coming from numbers not in your contact list. Again, this also works with google voice if you have linked your google voice number to ring on your phone. (I don’t actually use the ā€œsilence unknown callersā€ feature because, i receive less than one spam call per month and I have been using the same mobile and google voice numbers for more than 10 years)

Good advice.

When we first moved here TV provided a list of origins of area codes from where known scammers operate. Most of ā€˜em were offshore (Bahamas was big) or Eastern Europe as I recall. Such a list probably means less and less as time goes by; you can get a mobile phone from any area code you desire (several scammers have numbers from area code(s) where I used to live) but still, a good resource to have.

You can also google _ _ _ area code, and you will get the geographical source of the number of any number about which you might be suspicious.

Most of the spam calls I get are from numbers in my cell's area code where I no longer live. When I see that area code I can pretty much assume it's a spammer.

But what puzzles me is the people who work the scam. It seems they are just people doing their job because you often can hear others in the background. They must be in a call center. I wonder why these people take these jobs that require them to engage in criminal activities. Why don't they feel guilty about cheating and stealing from people?

And why can't law enforcement, the FTC, etc track them down and stop it? In fact, are they trying to do that? I have never heard in the news of such actions by law enforcement.

It took years of work and vigilance to stop cursing and to lose the chip I had on my shoulder when I arrived here. Well now that the scammers have ruined my afternoon naps recently I just scream see you in court and every truck driver curse word and words I make up during my 30 second rant. I even do what to me is the unthinkable. I bring their Momma into the rant in a not so kind manner. The calls have stopped for four days.

I don’t know how to link onto this site. You can google ā€œ YouTube Scammer Paybackā€ and it will take you to his site. He is a bit of an odd character with colored hair. He goes by the handle ā€œPierogiā€. Does a great job of fouling up the call centers. He now has a pretty larger ā€œcounter scammerā€ operation. He speaks Hindi which rattles the call center scammers as he can understand their conversations in the background during their scam calls. The videos can be long but amusing to listen to

I feel everyone’s pain.it still amazes me that people are bothered so much by these calls , when it’s just so easy to not answer the phone. I don’t seem to get many , maybe because I just ignore them . As far as emails and text the ones that do get through after the I phone blocks many , well I just delete them , simple and serene process . God the things that bother people

Whenever I receive something that looks like it might be legit, I go to that website directly where I can determine its legitimacy, instead of clicking on links within the e-mail or responding to the e-mail. As far as calls go, I activated the "silence unknown callers" option on my phone. Most of them are pretty obvious though, especially when I get a call from Verizon or Comcast, neither of which I am a customer of. You'd have to be pretty gullible to fall for 99% of them, IMO.

Scammers. Another category of criminals to be punished with the ultimate penalty. That solution may not stop ALL scammers but it is guaranteed to stop ALL those caught from becoming repeat offenders.

The phone scams are only the half of it. Really, the risk from scam calls is moderate compared to what's happening on the internet. We've reached the point where just about any promotional email or web sales ad is suspicious. The scammers have become so good at cloning web sites, even the legitimate companies they've cloned are impressed.
Just read where a cybersecurity firm reported there are an estimated 42,000 imposter domains (websites, info platforms) hacking data about our internet use and shopping interests. These hacks become phishing emails and flat-out fraudulent websites. Be cautious and do research on the firms and domains before deciding. For example, test the "contact us" info to see if it works, or read reviews to gauge authenticity.
Credit card and bank security groups will try to help if a bogus purchase or scam bites you. But, they're overwhelmed and resolution of your problem might takes month
