When we lived in Virginia, we would often visit the Civil War battlefields, with Gettysburg being our favorite. The Florida monument is one of the smallest state monuments but it is my favorite because of this meaningful inscription:
"Like all Floridians who participated in the Civil War, they fought with courage and devotion for the ideals in which they believed. By their noble example of bravery and endurance, they enable us to meet with confidence any sacrifice which confronts us as Americans."
Even though my ancestor Lewis Dear fought for the North, I definitely respect people honoring their ancestors who fought for the South.

Those flags have been there for a long, long time and they are on a pole on private property. The owner probably has just as many opinions as those posting on here. There are bigger issues we face then the flag someone is flying on their property along an interstate.

Though they have the right, I don't understand the need for people having to display their ideology. In my neighborhood there is an American flag flying with a picture of our former president in the middle and before that they had a flag with Go Brandon. It doesn't bother me. I just don't get it. What's next a Nazi flag.

To Southern people growing up in the last half of the 20th century the flag represented cultural pride and was not a racist symbol. It still isn’t. I love my country and all 50 states. I would die to save any or all today. There are many flags I do not like but in today’s world every cause has a flag. We have become accepting of different people and their causes. The Confederate flag has no cause today other than a movie prop for redneck pickup trucks or perhaps something for people to complain about. I suggest getting over it and being happy. I predict the flag will be gone in 3 months without a March on Richmond.

Where exactly was this? I’ve seen a pole with a Grand Union flag flown with the American flag down here but not a Confederate flag.
I don't know the exact street, but if you enter thru the north gate then drive to the end of that road. There's a community center parking lot. Take a right on the street prior to the parking lot. The house is on a corner just prior to the end of the street. They are doing some landscaping and there is a sign for that. There is a flag pole in the front yard with an American flag. The confederate one is just below it. Several people have seen it, and this is how I heard about it. If it is not there now then they took it down.
As far as the comments the confederate flag not racist… Please don't insult our intelligence. I lived in Mississippi for many years, and yes it is very much a symbol of racism. If you don't believe that look up the articles of secession that each state who flew that flag during the Civil War wrote. In every single article of succession within the first paragraph is the word slavery. I'm really hoping this is a bridge too far for The Villages.

You are missing a great deal.
And many of those were called to arms from the south, had no choice. They had No slaves, zero education of reading or writing, and only had the knowledge of what was told to them.
Those who choose not to leave their family for the cause, they had very little knowledge of, were to be shot. Yes my family is from the south, our family men who were taken to war, never returned home, it was a given they died.
What happened to women and children left on the farms as the North moved south, was unspeakable, the words passed down from my Great grandmother, ( she lived to 104 sharp until the day she died) then to us as children
Great Great grandmother, and her sister were the only ones left to live, all others, after things she would not speak of, we’re hung in the barn. She believed mother, aunts and older sister, and 2 brothers were alive when they were hung, but had hoped they were not.
My Great grandmother was proud of her southern roots, her native mixed heritage, and her family that sacrificed their lives,
We have my great grandmothers saddest times, and her happy times recorded. so her children’s children, and so on, will know the proud family she came from, and the sacrifices she faced.
So have very good knowledge of the war, passed down from our generation’s, with a confederate flag that many never witnessed in person, and none of which had ever owned slaves.
Just like the majority of the men who were taken to war, died, and now like another generation who fought for their country, and died were not recognized for their sacrifice.
Can you name that war for the second time in history veterans came back to hate and discriminated against for fighting a war they had no control of?

When I was in the USAF I met MANY southerners that were OUTWARDLY prejudiced against northerners. It seemed strange to me, but they were VERY serious about it. I imagine some of them have moved to The Villages and still retain their prejudices......which can be easily expressed by a Confederate flag. Anthropologically speaking, it is about tribalism ; they wish to show their tribal colors. It is like a don't tread on me flag. It may be intended to express dissatisfaction with Washington DC. It is like putting down the "system" and being a "rebel without a cause."
There are several Confederate flags in the Historic area.

They call it free speech. It's a Constitutional thing. There is no law forbidding anyone from being "racist" but there are laws about action upon their racist ideology. Flying a flag of choice is not breaking any law. It may not be tasteful in the area of Northern migrants here in the Villages, but we have that freedom and those that do not approve have the freedom to move elsewhere. It appears that the WOKE crowd has once again proven how hysterical they can get.
Just out of curiosity, how many here have passed Ukrainian flags being displayed? For the many of those that are Russian-American do you think that would offend? I don't see any drop in housing prices. My home has doubled in value according to the present selling prices of similar homes.
Someone asked me what the black American flag with a blue strip was when we passed it. I told that person that it represented support for law enforcement or Blue Lives Matter. I bet that offends some also, right? Everyone has loyalty and pride to something and many like to display their loyalty.
Get over it. I live across the street from someone of a differing political party. Oh my! They are great neighbors.

My spouse wouldn’t ever try grits, even though they were on the table couple times a week. While at our son’s restaurant in Louisville, he tried a bite of my Shrimp and Grits. Then traded plates and finish My dinner. He now realizes he never had a properly good grit, until that night.
Grits are only good if they are long cooking, to correct consistency, usually stone ground. I find most restaurants can’t properly make grits, since you can’t reheat, and usually use a quick grit mix.
Flying Biscuit makes a ok grit, if you would like to try again.

For the first 30 years of my life the Confederate flag was only a symbol of Southern heritage to me. I didn't fly the flag because I'm from Illinois. Then some people decided the flag was a symbol of white supremacy, and only white supremacy. Why must the white supremacy reasoning now be the only reason that the flag is displayed?
The American history is slowly being erased by certain groups of the American people. Unfortunately not all history is positive or great but it is the history that shaped our country. Many things or people that people find offensive were actually excepted practices at the time they happed. We grew from our mistakes but our past does not need to be eliminated.

Thank you! I knew little about grits except they were served in the mess hall and at local restaurants. My spouse made them mixing in red NM chile. That and butter made them passably palatable to me.

From what I can make out from this thread, is all these years later, the Civil War rumbles on.
Plenty of time left to sort out differences of opinion.
The war of the Roses in England lasted 32 years, and happened nearly 600 years ago, and Yorkshire and Lancashire still can't stand the sight each other!

Few know there's a cemetary in Wildwood behind Russell Stover on CR 232 named Oak Grove. When you enter, there's a large granite Confederate monument listing the names of the proud Florida soldiers that fought and died for the South. Very touching!

American by birth, Southern by the Grace of God! Confederate states seceded the rest attacked! I guess you never wonder why they seceded? Not the first to consider but the first to do it. States rights were a lot bigger issue without the federal bureaucratic jungle there is today so the lack of control and high tariffs on everything Southern to benefit enterprises up yonder. By the way, reconstruction is over so I'd be careful throwing words like that around.

Yeah, it probably is. After our Supreme Court ruled that it is OK to burn an American flag, pretty much anything goes. We Americans love our freedoms.
If you really want to fly a Nazi flag, then take yours out of your garage, put it up, and see how many people gather to admire it.

Whether it is the confederate flag, statues of confederate generals, or other southern pride tokens, can you imagine if there were these items of idolatry to Hitler displayed around Germany? Perhaps you scoff, but the confederate flags are highly offensive to the majority of Americans, just like a Nazi flag would be abhorrent to almost all Germans.

The further south you get in Germany, and even into Austria, you might be surprised how many people would fly that flag.

Upon reflection I recall many of the Southerners I encountered in SC back in 1965 referred to what I call "The Civil War" as "The War Between The States".
Over the years I spent periods of time in various regions of the USA and found that the cultures all varied a bit from one another. People were for the most part pretty friendly but they looked at things a little differently, spoke with varying degrees of politeness/gruffness and had somewhat differing diets. It is after all, a large country.

I’ve also heard it referred to as the war of northern aggression.
I just can’t get myself all worked up over this. This flag doesn’t bother me any more than all the stupid political flags, pride flags or even college flags. If someone wants to fly a purple turtle flag I just don’t care. It’s not something I’m willing to waste the energy to get upset about.

I grew up in Kentucky, technically a state loyal to the Union, but being a border state loyalties were divided and often members of the same household served on opposite sides. As a previous poster accurately stated it was called The War of Northern Aggression by many in the south. I had a great-great grandfather who served on each side of the conflict. I have spent many years studying my family history and the gggfather who fought for the Confederacy owned no slaves so I doubt he fought and died to protect other’s rights to do so. The war was about more than just slavery. It was also about the economy, resources, and states rights in an era where people felt the government had become radical and too controlling. (Ring any bells?) Much like the issues that led to the American Revolution. I am no less or more proud of one ancestor over another and I make no claim to know what their personal motivations were at the time. Just as no one knows what that person’s motivation is for flying that flag in the Village of Richmond. Maybe they’re saying it’s time for another civil war. Maybe they are history buffs and the Civil War was their area of expertise. Maybe they are just proud of their southern heritage, and not because of slavery necessarily. There are areas of the country today where conversations are being had about secession by serious and intelligent people. Whether or not they are right is very subjective, but their right to discuss whatever they want is not.
At any rate, we are grown people here who have lived through a lot of history and an overwhelming amount of change. We have all been exposed to many radical ideas over the course of our fairly long lives and we have survived. Our skins should be thick enough to be able to handle being around people of differing ideas without melting down. The day they outlaw the right to have differing opinions is the day you should really start to worry, not the day you see a piece of cloth of a certain design on a flagpole.

The confederate flag was flown during the Civil War when 11 states broke from the nation to defend the practice of slavery. And most recently it has been claimed by white supremacists and other hate groups , such as those who stormed our capitol on January 6. It has been used by the Ku Klux Klan for decades. In 1956, two years after the Supreme Court had declared school segregation illegal, the state of Georgia incorporated the battle flag into its official state flag as a symbol of resistance to integration. In 1960, when six-year-old Ruby Bridges became the first Black child to attend an all-white school in the South, she was met by crowds of white people who threw stones at her, called her the N-word, and waved the Confederate flag. So I laugh at those who say the flag represents Southern Heritage. For black southerners it certainly represents their southern heritage - terror, torture, and oppression.

Lou Lou’s in Louisville. Chef and owner is from Louisville, trained in NOLA. (Restaurant is named after both, There isn’t one thing I don’t love at that restaurant. Origami site is small, but they are opening a new place near downtown.
I have eaten at Fleet’s, and while I really liked their S&G, Lou Lou’s is still my favorite. I grew up making grits at a young age. Alway got our grits directly from a stone mill. Now we add different cheeses, and always use pink shrimp

I have lived in New England all my life ..... until I moved here 5 years ago. I'm a dyed in the wool Yankee. However, I find nothing wrong with seeing the "Confederate" flag waving in the breeze. It's a source of pride for many southeners, and it really has nothing to do with slavery. It's just the misinformation that has been put out there for several generations, that people start to believe that misnomer. And if the Confederate flag offends people, then I feel sorry for them because they really are emotionally weak, thin skinned people.
Go visit a Civil War cemetery in S. Carolina and read the headstones. There are hundreds of Yankee dead buried there, and their burial was respectful and honorable. The headstones are engraved with the soldier's name, unit, state and date of death, and even today, the cemetery is well preserved, and open to all visitors.

Last I heard, this was still the United States of America. We “Northerners” came down here for the warm weather and comfortable standard of living. If someone wants to fly the confederate flag on their private property, that’s their right. We may be offended by it, but everyone will be offended by something at some point. As another commenter said, if you don’t like it, don’t look at it. We can’t live our lives trying to please other people. That’s what’s called Freedom. Ask the protesters in China about that.
