What is the height of the tunnels in the Villages. Understand some are lower than others. What is the lowest tunnel and what is the clearance height?

Please do not get a lifted golf cart, these have a high center of gravity and can tip over easily, lifted ones tip over easier than normal ones.

Even some of the stock carts are tall enough to be a concern. We looked at two electric carts that with particularly high tops. While there *should* be enough clearance in the shorter tunnels we chose not to take the chance.

Wow, there are two tunnels at Meggison and Warm Springs that are only 70” high. Did not know that. Now I’m going to have to measure my carts. I’m wondering if that’s a typo. That’s a foot shorter than the next shortest ones, which includes the infamous tunnel near Saddlebrook rec center that tops tend to scrape.

Must be a typo since I believe I have gone through both with no problem

I scrape my roof in that tunnel with a standard Star cart, unless I'm dead center. I'd hate to see what happens in a tunnel lower than Saddlebrook.

The tunnel that goes under North Buena Vista by Harmswood is really low. The one by Saddlebrook is low but you can get through it with no touching of the ceiling.
We don't use them now that we have moved further south in The Villages.

I also have a Star Sirius….when I had the demo cart I scraped at Saddlebrook. I think if you stay close to the center and go slow it is not an issue. However, when you are riding solo pay extra attention, the cart will sway when cornering.

The graphic is missing the distance from the center to the side. I think the tunnels at Meggison are much wider than the one at Saddlebrook.

Since it’s an arc, the critical height is one golf cart width from the center which could be an inch or two less.

That is definitely a typo, and I noticed it when that document was first published. Thought maybe they would correct it, but guess not? If those two tunnels were indeed only 70" tall, I would not be able to stand up inside them. They are significantly taller than that, as are all of the newer tunnels South of SR-44.

Did you get a response when you advised them of your concern when document was published?

Whatever you do, if you need to drive through a tunnel to get home, don’t buy a Christmas tree and strap it to the roof of your golf cart. I saw someone do exactly that a few years ago, the result wasn’t good.

I have had a lifted electric cart for over three years and have never had a problem. It has never come close to tipping. i should mention that with the cart being electric, more of the weight is mounted down lower than with a gas cart due to the batteries. Also with the height of the lifted cart and the associated 12" wheels, i have never had a problem going through any tunnel.

When you say "critical height is one golf cart width from the center".... You're assuming that the person coming at you is driving on the proper side of the center line!!!

This database of all tunnel dimensions is good. I have linked this to the golf cart page for newbies and snowbirds on

I also like the District's video on golf cart safety.. never enough

I go through those tunnels often and have never thought about them being too low. I’ve also never been to the Saddlebrook tunnel to compare.

If you search you will see a pic of a cart stuck on the edge of a tunnel flipped up high - don't hug the edge

I contacted districtgov.org this morning after reading the posts. I sent them the information below from their chart.

MR4 Under Meggison Rd at the intersection of Warm Springs Ave 64" 70"
WS1 Under Warm Springs Ave at the intersection of Meggison Rd 64" 70"

This evening when I checked my email, I was informed that both of these tunnels are:

'91” from the light in the center to the base, and 74” on the side. (both tunnels).

We will have our chart updated.'

The further north you go the smaller the tunnels get. I have bumped the roof with my 2013 Yamaha 4 seater, unloaded.
