Over the years of using TOTV, I've never paid much attention to "statistics", mine or anyone else's. But recently, due to a comment someone made on a very different subject, but called attention to the "statistics" of the person who made the comment, I noticed them for the first time really. I was surprised to find those who have made literally thousands of posts and been "thanked" thousands of times, but have never (0) thanked anyone ever for a their comment, helpful tip, or post. Could that really be accurate ? Just seemed a bit hard to believe that people on here that many times have never found anything helpful or worth a "thanks" ?? Have no idea, just struck me as very curious was all ! I thought....LOL... are these actually "bots", LOL, so they don't "thank" others, like human beings...LOL ! ? In all seriousness, just seemed strange and never noticed in all the years since they first started this over at Crisper's on Fridays ! BTW, I miss Crisper's...but apparently I'm in the minority for sure...LOL !

I miss the Crispers get togethers too. Back in 11, 12, 13, and 14 it was a chance to actually get to know other posters. I think it makes it less likely to give or receive a snarky or downright mean reply if you actually know the other posters. Of course there were a lot fewer regular posters in those days. Typically on any thread I would actually know half and more of the posters and that made it fun. A lot of those “old timers” are either gone or decided to pursue other interests.

I don’t know why someone cares whether they get likes or no likes , if I post something , it’s just my opinion . For those that need to be validated , maybe they can make a virtual participation trophy to make you feel warm and fuzzy . Go Eagles

When I first joined the forum there was no “like” button and I preferred it that way. The “like” probably came about as a popular item on other forums, Facebook etc. I refused to use it for a whole year. Then I started to see that hitting “like” can mean agreeing with a post or thanking other posters for considering and often helping you in your situation. So I started to use it myself. The reason you may see thousands of “thank you” for one poster, is because if one writes a post many people agree with, that post can get 20 “likes”. Ten such post, 200 likes/thank you.
I’ve kept tabs on my count occasionally, and it has always been accurate. You get a feeling for most posters from what they write, how consistent they are, etc to recognize them. You also get a feeling for trolls after you’ve been on the forum enough.
Some people never say “like” because they are not used to it, like I was initially. They may actually not like the “like” function. So we are different. It’s all good.

Well if it happened face-to-face or by cell I'd thank them. On-line...meh! a person may or may not thank them. either way that attitude reeks of virtue signaling. if someone posts something on line and it helps some people I think that's great. I do not expect a thank and am happy to believe I helped someone. There is something wrong if they always expect a thank you. it's like that is the reason when in fact doing something good is really it's own reward.

The "thanks" thing is comparatively new to ToTV. Some folks just aren't interested in participating it. That's fine. It also doesn't mean they have nothing to contribute, or that their posts aren't thanks-worthy. So they get thanked. But they don't reciprocate because they're really not interested in that aspect of the forum.
I'm fine with that. I participate and don't fault anyone for choosing not to.

I do use the thumbs up 'like' icon and/or reply my thanks/like on the thread. I personally am curious whether people agree or disagree with my opinions, so I do look to see if I got 'likes' or replied to with various opinions.
I wish I could see which people 'liked' my opinions though. I can't seem to find that info in my statistic page.

I think, I thought, I sorta-kinda knew what the Thumbs-Up button was there for, now I do not know. As with most things on the internet today. The new language of today is not too easy to understand. Now I understand how my parents felt as they did not understand setting the VCR etc, back in the day. For instance what does "Post Quick Reply" actually mean? What kind of statement is that? Sometimes, I have to wonder.... is it just me? I truly don't think so. Thank You for your time/ Have a wonderful day!

Yes, you are correct. Some people simply never hit the like button. I “like” posts that I find thoughtful, interesting, or helpful. That doesn’t usually include one sentence responses. I don’t “like” posts just because I agree. I like posts by, say, the guys who know how to fix things and explain how to do it. I like posts by people who recommend excellent businesses or people.
If I write something here, usually I think about it and try to write something worth reading, helpful, substantial. (Note: if you respond EARLY, the day before something reaches the e-mail version, it will be seen by more people and perhaps get liked more. But I never get around to doing that.) I’ve noticed that I may spend a half hour writing a useful response with links and photos, yet no one likes it. But if I write something in line with one of our many local prejudices or peeves, I might get several likes. Ten likes on one post? Never on mine, so far as I can remember.

We wanted to provide some more content on this post.
1) There are no bots that we run on the website. Since a user would have to be registered and logged into their account to have the 'like' or 'thumbs up' button, we are confident that numbers are actual numbers.
2) The '+' will show you on your specific post who 'liked' or 'thanked' you for the information.
3) The Crispers lunch was very popular. It was most recently being organized by users on the website and not TOTV. TOTV would support and announce the luncheon for the users who were organizing it. There were occasions where TOTV would pay for the entire luncheon. If any users would like to organize this in the future you can reach out to us for support.
Thanks for all your support!

Oh I totally agree, at one time there was no subtle, or overt, putting others down. When they first started, it was ALL about helping each other, giving "heads up" on various things going on, people posted items they found such as (found _____ on golf cart path near _____. Call to identify). And people offered things they could not longer use, it's definitely expanded and evolved over the years. I do think people were kinder in their remarks when so many met and socialized with others, but there were FAR fewer residents back then ! I LIKED Crisper's food, apparently I was in the minority or it would sill be there....LOL !

Reminds me of the "Born Loser" cartoon. There is a red button on the wall with a sign that says "Do Not Press the Button".
He presses it and falls through a trap door in the floor.

Although acceptable, the word fora to me sounds a bit gooney as a plural. I like the plural; FORUMS.
If we all liked the same thing, they would only sell vanilla. And Reeces.
Hi GG……good to see you back on this forum.

Hi Pairadocs,
I have been around here forever, too. Yes. Things have certainly changed in a lot of ways and everywhere. TOTV is a microcosm often reflecting those changes. I do appreciate the fact that the moderators keep things from getting out of hand. If they did not do so, TOTV would have turned into just another internet cesspool of dysinformation and divisive behavior — and I would have left.
I am not on Facebook. TOTV is my only social media. I show up to post as kind of a hobby, like some people do puzzles or crochet. I get more into posting on days when I am procrastinating because I have work to do that I don’t want to do.
Sometimes when I think about all the posts I have written here, I say to myself, “Geez, Boomer, you coulda written 3 plays or gone to law school with all the words you have spent on TOTV.”
But I keep on posting. (sigh) Having been around since long before the thank you thing, I guess I am not doing it for validation.
