Hi. I want to add a trap [like they have at rec centers in craft rooms] to the U joint in my laundry tub. Work with glass and want to keep it from going down the drain! AND I have a water softener which we've never turned on since buying in 2018. I'd like someone with expertise to make sure it's working right, set it up, and tells us what we need to do to keep it going properly. Any recommendations for a plumber or handyman who can do small plumbing jobs?

Mike Scott Plumbing has always done a fine job at a reasonable price for me.

Re: glass and laundry tub. I expect you can find a screen designed to fit the drain. It is a low cost item. Beware your laundry tub is probably made of fiberglass. Glass will scratch it.
Water softener not turned on? I would look for a name and model on the item. Then look on the internet for INSTRUCTIONS. I expect from the post, you bought a resale. If, it was shut off I expect there is a reason. Leaks? Destroying plants etc.
