Yes, you have overpaid your Federal taxes. I got a refund last year. In my case my husband had paid the taxes, became very sick and I paid them again. They refunded me the money almost by return. Great service.

I know what you mean about long waits on hold.
I think we all know about those ridiculous, time-wasting holds.
But — I DO NOT know why snarky answers to help-seeking questions show up so often on TOTV. (sigh)

Probably relates to taxes and the IRS. If it does I think you might get a letter in a few days explaining.
You can access your IRS account here. Your Online Account | Internal Revenue Service (https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account) Do not know if it will have your answer.

Don't be sorry. You didn't do anything wrong. Some people just like being snarky.

As someone else wrote, it may be beneficial to open an online account on the IRS website. It is useful for many things like tracking your return, payment history and making estimated payments, etc.
If you did a paper the IRS computers probably caught a small math error.

Far too little to inquire about.
If you must check your taxpayer account online.

Find Information About a Payment
If you received a check or EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) payment from Treasury and do not know why it was sent to you, the regional financial center (RFC) that sent the payment can provide more information. To determine which RFC to contact, select the type of payment and follow the instructions below.
If the payment is a Treasury check: the city and state of the RFC are printed at the top center of the check. Once you have determined which RFC sent the payment- either Philadelphia 855-868-0151 or Kansas City 855-868-0151 - contact them to see which federal agency authorized the check.
If the payment is an EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) payment: the Company/Batch Header Record contains information about the payment in the form of codes and symbols. Match these to the following to determine what the symbols on your payment represent:
Symbol Number
Located in Field 3 - Company Name - of the Company/Batch Header Record. Each Symbol Number corresponds to a RFC:
220
Austin Regional Financial Center (Austin, TX)
310
Kansas City Regional Financial Center (Kansas City, MO)
303
Philadelphia Regional Financial Center (Philadelphia, PA)

Thanks for posting this. My USPS daily email showed something from the IRS yesterday and I was too scared to go get the mail.

Yeah, I got one, along with a note that says it is taxable income.
So I am going to put it in the bank.

You're right, Boomer, and it's almost always the male of the species making the remarks.

Your question was very reasonable. Anyone can question why one would post a question concerning ANYTHING on the board. Some would rather reply with smarky comments than answer or remain silent.

I agree with you about the smarky remarks and those who make them. You didn't have to go with the whole male of the species (even if it may be true)

 It was reasonable, very reasonable..... but when you ask a question online you open yourself up to a lot of answers NOT just the ones you like. I didn't think snarky when I read it. I thought there's someone with common sense.

We hit the jackpot this year. .
$1,500 back from the IRS. . they decided to refund the penalty for late filing, I don't ask questions when the IRS gives me money back. .
$2,000 back from the state of MA. . somehow they collected more income tax from everyone, in excess of the state maximum allowable, so they refunded the over collection. .
1) I didn't know there was a maximum amount which could be collected. . .
2) How would the state with a flat income tax collect millions more than the allowed amount?
When the government gives me money, I willing accept it, but i don't grovel for it. . . nor did I expect it. . .
happy new year readers!

The Treasury check I received has a memo at the bottom, TSP Disbursement, which would suggest it was a year end adjustment/disbursement of my TSP RMD.

As I've posted before. Some people do try to help BUT, I would confirm most anything you read here. My pseudo-name is Daves. Should there be any problem with that check, or any other issue but, daves on talk of the villages said will get a good laugh.
We all are forced to deal with some HUGE monsters. The TREASURY is surely on the list.
Waiting on the phone for the treasury is likely worse now. People are off for Christmas and New Years. Were it ME, I would deposit the check, unless there is a memo such as payment in full, unlikely on a Treasury check. I would wait a few days after New Years and then call. I would avoid Mondays and Fridays as well as lunch time.

If it was taxable income, then it would not be for overpayment of your taxes. That would not be taxable.

I’ve had a similar situation a while back. Got a check for 40 something dollars with no info. Later I figured out that it was travel payment for my prior travel to a VA facility. Obviously not something that would be the case for most folks, but maybe something similar? Just a thought…

I got a check in 1985 from the IRS for a tax refund from 1964.

On the check - at the lower left side - there should a form number and a year that will provide you with the information to know which return you should research,
On IRS.gov you can set up an account - if you don't have one- to get a transcript for the period in question.
That should explain the refund.

What happens if you keep it & it was sent to you by mistake & a couple of yrs. from now if they find out you got something that you weren’t suppose to get, you know the Treasury will tell you to return it with interest & fine you. Even though you did get it by mistake. I know it’s happened to me! Just saying, it never hurts to call & ask just to be safe than sorry!

Most likely income tax refund , could be from a few years ago , due to an other , you may get a 1099 next month to claim any interest.

Could be an adjustment to your SS. If you are retired but still earning other income your calculated retirement amount may have increased and this is the adjustment to catch you up

Let’s see if you took the total replies to the OP question and subtracted all the comments that were useless or simply responding to other comments, I think you would have some pretty good info for future use. Almost worth reading the extraneous responses that lent absolutely zero to this stream. Thank you OP for posting

I got one recently from the Treasury Department. It was not from the IRS as many have suggested yours might be. Mine was a refund of overpayment of Medicare premium. Have you overpaid anything that you recall?

I would think both would accompany the check with an explanation. If not I'd be hesitant about cashing it until I knew precisely what it was for and had documentation to prove it. It is a small amount but scams proliferate and we're big fat targets here in TV.

Mine was legit. Definitely from the Treasury Department - absolutely no explanation, but it did match exactly to my monthly premium - to the penny & when I considered it, there had been a double payment.

You can call the IRS and ask. There is a chance the answer will be correct.
IRS centers established to help people prepare their tax returns gave incorrect answers - or no answer at all - to 43 percent of the questions asked by Treasury Department investigators posing as taxpayers.
