Sumter Sanitation Fuel Surcharge

Anybody notice this on their utility bill ? I thought fuel prices have gone down.

It probably took them several months to come to this decision, so hopefully we will not see any significant increase.

Don't know much about this, but isn't fuel purchased by organizations such as this on a contract basis? Say, six months' worth of go juice at $x.xx, with the price unchanging until the next six months' (or so) worth is negotiated? Like airlines purchase jet fuel. Helps keep costs stable over specified lengths of time.

Don't know how others feel about this. Since there are only 2 of us why do we need pick up 2 times a week? We don't create that much garbage.
Also, since we are seasonal why can't our bill be reduced when we aren't using the service? You can't cancel & or pause.
Their cost would go down if they ran once a week. Ours might too!

So fire folks when you are gone, let the trucks sit in a lot somewhere, cancel insurance or pass those costs on to the residents while you are gone?

The wi- fi & streaming get put on pause = no charge/ payment, here & up north.
I'm pretty sure they don't lay people off.
Only have garbage pickup once a week up north with kids & pay for when you put out as a senior now.
So why do you need it 2 times with 2 people?

Unless you have wi-fi elves carrying the bits to your devices there is no one to lay off when you pause that service. But you already knew that.

You don't really need trash pickup at all - we didn't have it at all up north. It was easy enough to carry to the dump ourselves. Perhaps we should go that route?

Two pickups per week minimizes the number of days a bag sits in my hot garage attracting pests.

I find it interesting that there are terms for most everything. Inflation the term is sticky.
A utility is by definition a monopoly. They are granted a profit on their cost. Translation, they make money by spending money. There is no incentive not to spend money.

Board Direction for consideration of fuel surcharge and increase to the commercial curbside service charge Mr. Brown advised that as discussed during the August 8, 2022 meeting, Staff completed an evaluation of the Sumter Sanitation fuel expenditures, and based on the current contracted fuel price, it will result in a negative budgetary impact of $165,000 for the Sumter Sanitation Fund. If the Board would like to proceed with the process to recover this cost, the District would have to amend its Rule to provide for a temporary fuel surcharge for residential and commercial customers. The monthly recovery rate would be $0.34, and based on the number of residential and commercial accounts, the recovery period to be effective January 1, 2023 and ending with the September 2023 billing cycle. Mr. Brown advised that Jacobs obtains fuel for the Sumter Sanitation fleet from the District-owned fuel depot at the District’s contract pricing, which is contractually set through September 30, 2023. Similarly, TriCounty Sanitation recently implemented a temporary fuel surcharge for all accounts south of SR-44 within The Villages. Mr. Brown advised that Staff is also recommending that the Board consider an increase to the existing commercial monthly charge from $19.81 to $32.75. Currently, commercial customers receive back-door pickup twice a week, which is a very labor-intensive service. Mr. Brown advised that the amendment of the District’s Rule requires a 10-day advertisement notifying the public of the District’s NSCUDD’s intent to amend the Rule, followed by a 28-day advertisement providing notification that a public hearing will be held to receive public comment. Staff recommend that the Board provide Staff authorization to advertise to amend the District’s Rule related to solid waste charges to provide for a temporary fuel surcharge and an increase to the commercial curbside service charge.

To the guy who wanted once a week pick up: Maybe not so much in the winter, but in the warmer months you do not want trash/garbage sitting in your garage for a whole week. The smell would run you out

Once implemented, fuel surcharges never go away. Companies move on to the next disguise to generate revenue.

I am not charged for garbage or sewer when I'm gone from my northern city.

P.S. I think the garbage service here in The Villages is the best I have ever had at a reasonable cost.

Another quote for the Sept 2022 NSCUDD board meeting minutes as found on the District gov website under NSCUDD agenda.

"Board Director Friedland inquired if the gas prices go down will the fuel surcharge be adjusted. Mr. Brown advised that any additional adjustment would occur after September 30, 2023. "

Think they are a little over a year into the contract. So 2019 numbers don't fit into the equation.
