Roof Ventilation Attic Fan

I have seen a number of houses that look like they have Roof Ventilation Attic Fans.
Don't have on now, but considering having one installed.
Have a pull down stairs in garage that gives attic access. It does get quite hot up there at times.
Asking for comments as to how much these fans help??

Personally, I'm not in favor of adding roof penetrations for any reason in hurricane country.
