I heard a reporter today say that to get away from an alligator you have to run in a zig zag pattern. Really? A zig zag pattern ..... the area of the bank shown on TV was kinda steep and at 85 I doubt she is going to run up a bank and especially not in a zig zag pattern. It was a very terrifying way for this poor lady to die, but it could have been prevented. She may well have been a winter visitor and not used to the Florida wildlife.

I saw a video online today of guys fishing from a boat with a gator swimming quickly behind their catch. It snatched it, then jumped straight up them. They were laughing until they weren't. I don't think it got them...but just the same those critters aren't anything to fool with. People need to be aware AND their pets need to remain away from the ponds. ALL the time we'll see people who want to know if their dogs can swim here. SMH Florida isn't like your home-state up north.

remember at night an alligator is near invisible upon lawns and in or near shrubby especially some postal stations near water. Gators travel from pond to pond so be aware of your particular position especially those on the various paths throughout tv

We were camping at Eglin AFB in the Florida Panhandle last spring. You couldn't let your kids or dogs be outside the RV unsupervised because of bears and there were signs along the water saying not to let your dogs get too close because of alligators.

If you live here you have to know that it's 3 feet distance per every foot of length of the alligator. If you hear it hiss you are way too close. Also age matters, the ones that are baby size (5ft or less) not 'snack' on dogs and humans only the adults do.

Above all superman - you are NOT faster than an alligator. so keep it safe - at least 60 ft otherwise I hope you ran track. you'll need it.

Very tragic incident for certain.
People need to realize that dangerous-to-human wildlife were here long before we were and are living under stressful conditions due to shrinking habitats. We all need to respect their existence and give them a wide berth.

I grew up around alligators. They should be respected but not feared in most instances. They are part of the ecosystem here too. However, I have seen far too many in TV in the smaller bodies of water. Especially those with homes surrounding part or most of the pond or lake or near a recreational center. In areas with rivers or marshes nearby, keeping them out of the ponds would not be an easy task. But in many of the local ponds, they can removed and repopulation may not occur or take quite a while. And they should be removed in my opinion from these isolated bodies of water. Many of these local pond alligators have little or no fear of humans, which is not natural. In fact, I've seen several gators that will move closer to you either out of curiosity or perhaps some people feed them. Maybe they are just bored. Who knows. Young they are cute. Older ones, even juveniles, pose a risk to any small animal, especially mammals, or small children. Larger one pose a risk to adult people also, especially small framed adults.

Definitely not, but that's "social media" for you. I remember when the young woman jogger was taken by a gator around dusk when she was jogging on the grounds of her own Orlando apartment complex's lake. Foolish to live in terror, but it is sometimes difficult to convince those from states unfamiliar with gators and their characteristics, to at least be on alert !

I've wondered why gators that are large and end up in highly populated areas are not brought elsewhere, preferably the Everglades. I heard a gator trapper say once that alligators will return. I don't know how true this is and how far they will travel, or if people take the easy way out. Female gators especially will return to the same spot every year if they feel this is a safe place for their young.

She was a well loved resident of the community. The gator was a local one named Henry by residents. I wonder if people had been feeding him?

Wow! Thank you for posting this. It could have happened to anyone here in TV, with all our ponds and lakes!

A few years ago my daughter and I took a boat trip in Ocala with Captain Peggy. She always carried a gun with her, as she navigated the alligator infested waters. She even made us swim in the water off the boat! I asked her if she ever needed to use her fire arm. She said once, she had to draw on some teens who threatened her clients, but never on the alligators themselves. We didn’t know how close the alligators were to us until we looked at the photos we took. Captain Peggy was a ONE time event.
