McCall's Tavern in front of Spanish Springs lanes was the go to place for fried chicken. With new owners, I can't say whether it is still good, or not.

I went to PDQ (in Colony Plaza) when the kids were down last week. I was definitely impressed (for a fast food place)...

I had the 3 piece chicken tenders and they were plump, very moist, with a lighter batter/coating.

They had a variety of dipping sauces that were also very good.

I used to prefer chik-fil-a but the location and absence of ridiculously long lines has made PDQ my new favorite. The shakes are very good too.

Mallory Hill. Their Wednesday night special is fried chicken.

PDQ, Popeyes (44 and 75), McCall's, and Publix are also very good. Winn-Dixie might be as well but I can't remember for sure if I've had it from there.

We go to the Popeye's in Leesburg on Hwy 27. It would be nice if it were closer. I agree with your liking Pollo Tropical in another thread. Love the marinade on the chicken and the salsas but, unfortunately, none around.

Do not know of a restaurant which sells good fried chicken. Treat this like a pizza. Best fried chicken is at the Publix deli.

Huey McGoo's is opening soon at Sundance Tri, Wildwood... on 466A, next to the new Culver's. The other one is in Lady Lake.

If in either area try it and see if you like it better than Popeye's or Cane's. I think it's way better. I order the 7 piece fingers with both Honey Mustard and Sweet Heat side sauces. I do half grilled/half battered and sometimes I get an extra finger. (no, not the naughty kind!) :duck:

Cheers has the best!!

As I recall the people who owned the restaurant now occupied by Augustine's 1812 House moved over to Cheers in Stone Crest. When the Cheers people were in Spanish Springs location they had the absolute best and large portions of fried chicken. They along with McCall's were pretty much tied in the quality of their fried chicken.

With that said another vote for Cheers.

If you are willing for a bit of a drive, I like the wings at Yummy Chinese in Ocala - a little spicy and good Asian flavor. They are also have authentic Hong Kong-style Chow Mein, like they serve at Chinese restaurants on the West Coast.

With the new owners they dropped a couple of the side dishes and dinner roll. Seems the chicken pieces some how are bigger when high season ends as I've noticed with most restaurants here.

I ventured out last night to Cheers at Stonecrest for the first time in search of good fried chicken.

The chicken was moist and tender - so kudos for that. However, I was not a fan of the breading/batter. Cooked properly, but had very little seasoning or flavor. Extremely bland. Was hoping for something with a bit more “zing” like the great fried chicken I had on a recent trip to Louisiana.

I know there are many in TV that don’t like a lot of seasoning to their food, so I get why the restaurants here will cater to the majority in that regards. I guess I would return to Cheers, as the chicken wasn’t bad or anything, just not the “best”.

OP here. A lot of people have said that they like Publix, which I didn’t care for because of the very heavy coating. We found out that you can request what I’ll call a single dip. Big difference, I like it much better, and for $10 for a 8 piece box it’s hard to beat.

It's good, but not crazy better than other chicken tenders out there, IMO.

It also is on the more expensive side of the scale. And when the cashier spun the pad around and was looking for a 15, 20 or 25% tip for fast food, I swore I would not go there again.

I tip well (20% plus) for really good sit down service. But for handing me a bag at the counter? Too much.

Cheers Restaurant at Stonecrest CC has, by far, the best fried chicken in the area. McCalls Tavern in Spanish Springs used to be great. Lacking somewhat after new owners of the bowling alley took over. The Sunday Havana and Mallory fried chicken specials are good, but NOT as good a Cheers.
