Need information on battery disposal. Live in Sumter Co. area of villages. For many years, villages held collection day for such items (batteries, chemicals, medications, etc.). Have not seen those fall and spring collections for some now now. Between those times, was always able to find a retail store (office supply/computer, HD, Lowe's,etc.) with battery, light bulb, etc. collection boxes. Now all options seem to have disappeared, and the collection of house hold batteries from flashlights, compute mouse, game controllers, on, and on, and on, has expanded to THREE boxes of used batteries, and a larger (12X20 ?) box with defunct batteries from various hand tools (edger, drill). Can not put anything like this in trash as ALL of our trash in now BURNED. Can not put any kind hairspray can, whipped cream, NO aerosol as they will explode and damage the incinerator. Called villages for information, lady gave location of a Sumter county facility that is quite a long drive from our home, and also added the hours are "inconsistent, so be sure to check before making the drive" (???) Anyone have better information ?

If you using non lithium you can put them in the trash and they will be burned. Those batteries are non recyclable.

Nope, no can do in our part of the villages near Laurel Manor. NO aerosol cans, NO batteries of any kind they said (remember, where we are the lead, the chemicals from all the plastics, etc. are ALL put into the air. Of course the air from the incineration is "scrubbed" (as they put it) first, and is PERFECTLY SAFE, no negative effects "down the road" thankfully. But still need to dispose of regular "energizers"... seems everything needs a battery. The 11 smoke/fire alarms, every 12 months ... to add to all the rest !

Throw them in the trash.

Please cite the source from Covanta that says they can’t incinerate them at their plant.

From the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s website.

Seems we have different rules.....single use batteries can go into the trash, rechargeable and lithium cannot. Direction from the recycle center, home depot, the trash guys all agree.

It’s quite simple. The Laurel Manor area is in a district serviced by Jacobs.

“Village Community Development Districts 1-11 located in Sumter County, Marion County & The Villages of Fruitland Park:

Effective December 27, 2012 The North Sumter County Utility Dependent District (NSCUDD) became the provider of the solid waste sanitation services for the Marion and Sumter County portion of The Villages located in VCDD Nos. 1 thorough 10 when it purchased Sumter Sanitation. Sumter Sanitation also provides services to VCDD No. 11 in Lake County. The Sumter Sanitation services are contracted through CH2M HILL/Jacobs.

Beginning October 1, 2020, all solid waste and yard waste in the Village Community Development Districts 1-11, located in Sumter County, Marion County and The Villages of Fruitland Park, will be collected and transported by Jacobs to the Covanta Lake II, Inc. Energy from Waste (EfW) facility in Okahumpka.”

So sorry, when I called the number of Covanta, I just thanked the lady who filled me in, but did not (even think) to ask her name. Didn't think I'd need it actually, since I was not complaining about anything, just asking about where we CAN dispose of aerosol cans, batteries, etc. etc. That was it, so can't tell you.

Trash can. Hard even for me to accept BUT when I last took them to Sumter County collection day, that is what I was told.

Autozone, Advance and O’Reilly’s are car parts stores that accept old car batteries. Some will even give you a $10 credit to use in the store.

Very helpful giving out all those dates. Thank you. You wouldn't happen to know about any "shred a thons" to get rid of old documents by chance?

The fire department came to change my batteries for my smoke detectors. They told me to put scotch tape over the active end of the battery before putting it in the trash. I figure it’s the garbage disposal people who have to determine how to get rid of it since they stopped recycling.

That’s strictly for 9 volts (taping the end). If the pos and neg touch metal, they get super hot and can start a fire if near something combustible.

In the past Target had a bin for batteries, cell phones and plastic bags. They were in the front of the store near the service desk. Don't know if they still have them.

That location is for Lake County residents. They may ask for proof that you reside in Lake County.
