I have lived in The Villages for 7 years. I understand completely that people like to dance.
And the entertainment specifically told me that they "MUST" play dance music.
But dancing every day. Gee.
We are missing like 75% of actual music that was written for "Listening".
John Denver, The Carpenters, Simon & Garfunkel, etc.
Just Saying.....................................

Hummm, lived here more than twice that long and have heard the music of John D., Carpenters, etc. many times. Sorry don't know which groups we were listening to at the time, but many different groups do play those and many more examples of listening songs... but there ARE going to be people that get up and dance to anything; that's always going to happen... would probably have a few who would get up and dance to symphony selections... LOL ! Enjoy, try some groups you may have never tried ? Most have websites where you can go to find out more about their play lists. We are just so depressed at the loss of the Caribbean Chillers after all these years... wonder if any "Buffet" type group will ever be as good... probably never :cryin2::cryin2::cryin2:

Dunno about that. We were at Spanish Springs last evening for the wine walk and Rocky and The Rollers, who are easily head and shoulders (most of the upper torso probably, as well) better than any other group we've heard. They were about as "buffet" as you can get (assuming what I think the quoted poster meant by the comment), reaching back to before World War II and the Big Band sound for "In The Mood" followed by "Sing Sing Sing" (the drum solo was sensational!), including songs popularized by Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong ("What a Wonderful World" vocalist even had the gravelly voice down pat), etc., as well as rock from the 50s to at least the 80s, all done very well.

Hell yeah! I'm 65 and want that. lol. Throw in some Foo Fighters, Green Day and U2 as well!
Screw all that overplayed old crap. Too many people think they stopped making good music in 1980.
We saw the Hooligans play at LSL last year under their alias name "Anti Idol". They played Meatllica, Foo Fighters, Van Halen and lots of newer stuff.
The place was packed and people were standing like it was a rock concert.
There's obviously an appetite for this type of music. They need to have it more often.
Old music doesn't always mean good music! C'mon peeps,an open mind is a healthy mind.

Wow, you mentioned Tool!!! I just said to my partner "I wonder if they'll ever play Tool in the squares? Most songs are tough to dance to, but some of the most intelligent rock music. I'm definitely one for 90s and newer music to be played, as well as the older stuff.

How about some Christian bands every once in a while? They have music that people can dance and enjoy listing to also. I’m tired of all the nothing but rock and metal music. Why have they disallowed Christian music even at the pay venues like savannah center. At least allow a few Christian songs on the radio. There are a lot of Christian Rock groups now.

You can go to Edna's or Sawgrass in the afternoon (and some evenings) and it has laid-back listening music played by duos many days.

People like to hear songs that were hits when they were younger. They are less interested in four hours of music they don’t know. There is plenty of Christian music available at local churches with praise bands. Any band could squeeze in, say, a hit song by Switchfoot without a problem.
While the caliber of performance is lower, the Wednesday 1 pm Bluegrass Performance at Sea Breeze Rec Center welcomes an audience and always plays a few gospel songs because gospel and bluegrass are intertwined. There are also a couple gospel singalongs held here. Go to Entertainment (above), scroll down to Clubs, then type in Music and search. You’d be welcome.
Meanwhile, here is B.O.B. (Bunch of Believers) playing their hit “Mission Trip to Mexico” on YouTube. Good stuff.

We have four bands playing every night. I’d love to have a band in the rotation that just plays Bluegrass. Another one that just plays pre-80s old-style Country. We can sure dance to that! I’d enjoy a band that just plays Dixieland. I’d enjoy a band that plays Latin classics and sings in Spanish. (I love accordion.) speaking of accordion, I’d enjoy an evening of Cajun music. Hey, I would enjoy having a string quartet on the rotation. Live classical music is a pleasure. I’d love an occasional evening of Gypsy Jazz. I virtually never go to the town squares, but I WOULD go for these.

Many of the restaurants have music and most of it seems to be easy listening. Edna's, MacGrady's, and other outlying venues also have some really great music of the type you mention.

I am not a fan of 50’s and 60’s but maybe because I was born in 1960. I love to get up and dance which is why I go there. Definitely not looking for easy listening or Christian or hard rock. My favorite thing here is that there is music every night. I agree with others that suggested Edna’s where most times there is no dancing but just listening.

I think by “Buffet” they meant Jimmy Buffet. Just a guess based on the name of the band mentioned, “Caribbean Chillers”.

The bands are playing a variety of music that has the greatest chance of drawing the greatest variety of potential customers and revenue to the market squares. Intentionally excluding anyone who isn't Christian is a) discriminatory and b) shooting themselves in the foot.
On the other hand, I wouldn't mind at all (and would totally come to see) performances of Jesus Christ, Superstar or Godspell on those stages. That's about the closest to "Christian music" I can stomach and I actually enjoyed seeing both on Broadway back in the day.

In almost 8 years with a home in the Villages there have been only three bands we would go out of our way to listen to. He Said, She Said, Hooligans, and the Caribbean Chillers. Hooligans is the only remaining band in the rotation and they now play very infrequently, and I can’t remember the last time they played in Spanish Springs. Why in the world Scooter the DJ and an increasing number of bands playing disco keep showing up in the rotation is beyond me? There are some bands with excellent musicians playing the instruments, but the singing quality is a buzz kill. Need more bands like the Hooligans.

On the other hand (I have many hands) - I could totally go for some old-time traditional Black Gospel music. The kind that gets people up on their feet to shout Hallelujah and dance ("make a joyful noise unto the Lord" kinda stuff). And even Klezmer music (Jewish, not always biblical but it's its own style of music). I also have an extremist eclectic side, and can see a crowd of people sitting silently, drinking wine, while a group of monks perform acapella Latin chants.

I agree. Disco died many years ago and should remain that way.
We were told the Hooligans have a permanent gig at Disney World. That's why you don't see them very much in TV.

We have not listened to music at the Squares for years. It is much too loud for us.
We do like the music at Edna's, especially when Jersey Frank, Joe hand, or Dale Stumbo is singing. According to the Daily Sun, I think there are a number of places that have normal music.

Went into Spanish Springs tonight to pick up some sushi takeout from Sakura and parked the golf cart to listen to a couple songs by Paisley Craze since I never listened to them before. I was pleasantly surprised, they aren’t the Hooligans but they were definitely one of the better bands I have heard this winter in the squares. Based on a small sample size of only three songs I will definitely check them out again. I liked all three songs I had time to listen to and thought they did a nice version of Black Magic Woman by Santana.
