We always set 77 during the day and 74 at night. Fans on in living room. Don’t like fan in bedroom.

I'm a bit confused. We haven't moved to TV yet and we don't have central air in Mass., But if we put our heating system up to 77 degrees we would suffocate from the heat and the paint would blister on our walls. We set out thermostat to 68 and that is sometime too warm

You know what, my comfort level and yours are different so my settings are irrelevant.
Not to mention the differences in the calibration of the thermostats.

AC is a must in Jungle weather down here in the summer months just like heat is welcomed in winter in Mass.
I can't remember the last time I needed a winter jacket, gloves, or hat to leave the house. :clap2:

I understand the need for AC. My question is why 77- as I said if we set our heat up north at 77 that would not cool at all- it would feel like being in a furnace.

What kind of heat do you have up north? I bet it's not an electric heat pump. The kind of heat that the heat pump produces here in the winter doesn't feel like heat to me - it just feels like air blowing, not providing a lot of warmth. Granted, if our houses were heated by gas or coal furnaces, as was the house I lived in as a child, I would understand what you were saying. On the other hand, we find 77 deg. perfectly comfortable in the summer. In the winter I attempt to keep the heat under 77 because of the expense but find it uncomfortable.

The main difference is probably humidity.
You need to run the AC here enough to keep the humidity below 60% to prevent mold.
77-78 when home and 80-82 when away are typical recommendations. But some prefer lower AC settings.

I have a ecobee programmable thermostat. My AC setting is automatically set at 77° at 5 am every day. At 8:30 pm it automatically sets to 72°. I sleep much better in a cool environment. So my AC is doing most of its work at night when the air is cooler.

My wife and I came to agreement. She owns the day and I own the night so that I can sleep. 68 at night and 80 in the day with the patio doors and the garage door open with a screen for a breeze, although sometimes a very warm breeze. We are not here in the hot summer months, so it only gets up to 79 or so. If it gets above that, I will close the doors and set the a/c down to 76.

When in the Villages it’s 77 by day and 72 to sleep. When not in the Villages it’s set at 81 all the time. Since we got here on December 28th this winter, we kept the windows and slider open all the time and never used either the heat or A/C until a couple weeks ago when it really warmed up. We literally never use the heat while in the Villages.

73 all day and 68 to 70 at night plus the fans. It might change when the first true electric bill comes out. We have not been here for a full month without having to go visiting for a week each month at someone’s house.
Most importantly it’s on 79 when we go on a short get away.

We debate on temperatures and meet in the middle. I like 77, he likes 71. We meet at a constant 74 to 75. Anything below that and I’m freezing needing a sweater on inside. I’ve never used a ceiling fan once. They make me uncomfortable and my skin tickle, even on low. I feel everyone has their own temperature that feels right for them. My entire life I’ve loved the heat and have no problem with 90 degree summers. Anything below 75 and I’m uncomfortable, hence why I left the north.

We are talking about 2 different temps: every post here told the OP they set their COOLING temps to 77 while the OP was referring to heat temps. In the winter here, we set our heat temp to 68 and our cooling temp to 77`, 2 different settings. We might use the heat setting a couple times a year.

If you move here, your body may adjust to not spending months a year in cold temperatures. And plenty of people in Massachusetts have AC now. And telephones! Here, I have my heat around 72° in the winter and my AC at 74° to 76° in the summer, depending on what I’m doing and wearing, and use the ceiling fans as required. When the temp is 76°, I usually sleep without a top sheet or blanket. I used the heat for maybe three weeks in January.
Do what is comfortable for you. For me, 77° is too hot. 80° means the AC isn’t removing enough humidity, and mold may begin forming. A large percentage of us live in adequately insulated houses around 1200 sq ft, and 1600 is big. Heating them and cooling them is inherently less expensive than heating and cooling a 2400 sq ft average house in, say, Illinois. I might get a couple cooling bills slightly over $200 a month in late summer, and that is with 24/7 AC. I’m happy to pay $7 a day to stay cool.

79 all the time with a few ceiling fans on. Anything lower is freezing and a shock when you come in from the outside.
SECO recommends 78-81 as being the most efficient temperature.

I know it is hard to believe, but as you begin your Florida life, you will learn that setting your thermostat to 68 will make you feel like you’re in a freezer. When my mother used to tell me, she said her thermostat to 78 I thought she was crazy. But now that I’ve been a Floridian for over five years, I find myself setting it at 75 and being a bit chilly by night time. Yes, I am now a true Floridian and I suspect in another few years I’ll be setting mine at 78 too

I know what you’re saying. Heat set at 77 up North is very hot. We never go above 70 and often not even that.
Ac set at 77 is comfortable both here and up north. Can’t explain why, but you’ll catch on once you get used to having the ac.

I was born in Ohio, but lived in Florida since 1972. I keep waiting for the day that I get used to hot humid weather, lol. We keep AC at 76 during the day to keep hubby happy and 67 at night to keep me happy. I have always needed cooler air to sleep well. In my opinion, 77-80 is definitely warm inside a house, though compared to outside heat of 90-100 it's better. When I visit friends who keep their house warmer like this, I must always wear thin clothes and drink cold drinks.

We set our thermostat to "cool only" in summer. When the thermostat is set at 77, the heater doesn't come on! It just tells the AC not to come on until the temperature in the house reaches 77. It seldom if ever does! Sometimes 77 is too warm for us and we turn it down some, but I have to have at least 73 to sleep.

Been here for 17 years and found AC settings have decreased as years pass. At first we had it on 78 during day...and gradually we have settled on 76 daytime. Night we stay ay 78 with fans going. I think new thermostats might affect the ACTUAL number degrees set on.

Reading through the comments I can see I’m the odd duck here. Our thermostat is set at 72 degrees 24/7. Humidity is set to 50%. I need to keep the humidity down because I’m new to humidity, and am not adapted to it yet because we moved from a desert climate. Hubs just defers to me as he’s okay with whatever I need it to be. I also run our fans on low when we’re home, including at night in the bedroom. If a cold spell hits I do crank up the temp a bit so the air won’t run, but the heat rarely runs unless we get the temps we had at Christmas. Even with this 72 set point our SECO bill was only $80 this past month.

I guess we're odd ducks too. I would be absolutely roasting and sweating in most of your homes.
We have our AC set at 75 day time and 72 at night with ceiling fans running pretty much year round. (We have 10 fans total.)
When we have the occasional cold snap and everyone is cranking the heat, that's when we open the windows and get house down into the 60s and aired out. I love it! We only turn on heat if house gets below 65.
Even in winter we have to have air moving and turn the fans to the low setting.
I'm the one walking in shorts and sleeveless top when everyone else is bundled up in long pants and jackets/sweaters. LOL
I've lived in Florida since 1995 and still find the summer heat and humidity stifling, so I just avoid being outdoors as much as possible. :-)

Hi Massachusetts Neighbor,
I am from Connecticut (whoah, way south & tropical). Humans, people, us, you & me are way adaptable. For example: think about in the fall, the colder temps after the summer temps make us shiver & want to put the heat on, along with sweaters & long pants. But those exact same temps in the spring are like: Whoo Hoo shorts & tees. It is a matter of what you are used to. So in your example you are sweating (& rightly so) at 77 degrees after getting used to 32 degrees (& lower outside). 68 is way too warm for me in a 2 level house. If you are still in Mass right now, go outside & remember what this exact same temperature felt like in October.
Regards,
Nana2Teddy

We are snowbirds. I keep the house at 69 at night and turn off the air conditioner when I get up. I turn on the air when the indoor temp reaches 77 or 78. This saves electricity. We turn it on to a constant 79 when we go back to CT.
