View Full Version : What's Your Phobia?

Do you have a Phobia of any kind?

One of mine is public swimming pools.
Yep, and not because I not a very good swimmer, but because
I get the feeling of entering other people's bath water,
YUCK.

I guess I'm just not a water person.

What's yours?

That's a real shame considering the number of pools we have access to. I do understand that your concern is real.

I watched people go into the Southside Hot Tub when there was brown & white foam on the top and all over the place and it wasn't a bubble bath. It was a mixture of human stew. I kept my mouth shut and never went back. Our friends loved going in that damn hot tub and they were way too smart to listen to advice so I clammed up.

My only Phobias are Snakes which have lessened since we moved to Florida and now I've learned a bit about them. The worst thing for me is Flying, that's an OFFICAL no go. Never for any reason, case closed! :ohdear:

That would be my second phobia and again I can't say why even though I can
get to a faraway place in hours.

Flying is like when I had my Goldwing trike. I loved riding it, but as I got older
and seen the danger in traffic here in Florida, I sold it.

Serious fear of heights. As a very young child we were visiting a popular destination on the side of a small mountain. My cousin slipped, grabbing my hand, and we slide down the side to a rocky area. Took hours to get us back to safety. Now in todays world, there are fences, walls, and no longer a issue, that happened to us.

I can’t stay above 5th floor of a hotel, or drive over a bridge, rock climb, roller coasters, or anything to do with heights. Flying is something I can do, and traveled extensively for work, but I never look out the window, and don’t feel comfortable until plane has reached altitude.

I love to swim and if I had a phobia about it, I would imagine that it involved some sort of childhood adverse experience - and I would definitely want to see professional therapy. There IS nothing to be ashamed of. We here in the US are very reluctant to seek help, but I see it as improvement just like if you go for a golfing lesson. You just go and get a mind-tweak. I, personally, like the idea of HYPNOSIS. Incidentally, when I was a teen, I read a book on hypnosis. and I have to admit that I got some volunteers (bribed with beer) and when one had been hypnotized before at a demonstration, I was able to put them under myself. I finally decided that it was too dangerous for an amateur, like myself, to try to do. So, I forgot about it and NEVER tried again. Maybe, I should have gone to medical school........oh well maybe NEXT LIFETIME.

Also, dogs get ticks if you walk them in the woods. If they get near their ear, the dog cannot bite and kill them. Consequently, the dog's master must remove them and if not detected early, the tick swells up to about the size of a marble. Removing them is gross and for the master and painful for the dog. But, they are "man's best friend" and can be trained to be much quieter than a WIFE. And for the tick-in-ear removal, you are THEIR best friend.

Solitary confinement - that is, being confined in a room with no one there and nothing to do. I don't mind being alone if I have internet, books, walks, etc.

A nursing home can sometimes be close to the same thing as solitary confinement, so that is a big fear.

Nucky, I completely understand. But I certainly would not categorize it as a phobia. It just makes good sense to me.

I don’t know how it was in other places in the country, but in my part of the Midwest, it seems like some of us boomers (and beyond) went through a stage in the 90s, and the early 00s, when if we were building houses or remodeling bathrooms, we thought we had to have a Jacuzzi bathtub…..

I was among ‘em. (sigh) But, at least, we had sense enough to put in a big water heater.

Later sold the house with the giant Jacuzzi in the bathroom, bought another house from some boomer who had been like-minded back in our salad days of those damned jets……

BUT THEN, I perused plumbing websites until I found that same size, same shape, exact same tub — but without somebody else’s jets — that had been there for 20 years……

Had the old tub very carefully gouged from the nice, neutral tile that surrounded it (a Sawzall is your friend) — and new jetless version was plumbed in.

AND when we sold that house, that “soaking” tub was definitely a feature.

So, Nucky, not only do I get what you are saying, but I have played out the same aversion to jetted tubs of any kind. But please, please, promise me that you will not get so grossed out thinking about that hot tub on the historic side that you will go and take a Sawzall to it.

Persnickety, but not phobic, Boomer

It appears that as we all age, we tend toward being more closed-minded. The pharma companies have yet to develop an open-mind pill. Timothy Leary tried but encountered some resistance - probably it is for the better. We should NOT take any trips "without our luggage".

Bath water? Try a toilet!!! During our Lifestyle stay, our agent took us to Rec pool, it was empty. I looked on the stairs going into the pool and there were 3 TURDS! Guess the depends get loose when wet. There is a silver lining though, they were solid.

OMG...that's disgusting...hope you reported it!

I definitely don't think I'm a total germaphobe but I've been opening public doors in libraries, churches, etc with my pinkie finger if possible my entire life. Pre Covid when everyone started worrying I had them beat. I could be talking to someone on the phone and catch their cold. :pepper2: I've read on TOTV'S that a person wouldn't swim in a public pool because of germs. Not me. I'm a Poolaholic. But hot tubs, never ever never.

That Hot Tub isn't my problemo anymore. Nicest people in the world at Southside Pool but we have departed for points south. When I heard about the Turnpike Noise and the Coleman Facilty I just had to move down that way. It's great and anyone who says it isn't drunk the water in the Southside Hot Tub! Take Care Boomeroonski! Don't forget to check the direction of the screws on your outlet covers! East & West only! :a20: I'll never forget the day you answered that post. We had just had a catastrophe in N.J. and you made me laugh, thanks!!!! :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

what if you were in a nursing home with 2 or more people per room? And then they wheeled in a person that you hated from your previous active life. And you were there together for years until one of you died?
.........that would be close to the only phobia that i might have.

I agree with the solitary confinement phobia......generalized to include all prisons. The thought of being in prison is terrifying!

I would prefer solitary to being in the general population.

Just have a question for you. I may be enlightened with an honest answer. What is the reason you do this with other peoples posts? Is a an good thing, are you happy about what they have posted or is it an insult of some kind.

I admit I'm not up to date with all the fast lane lingo and meaning of things like you doing this constantly. Maybe you or someone else can school me? Thank You for your anticipated cooperation in clarifying why you do it.

It won't be funny at all if you answer my request for an answer by reposting this post that way!

Sometimes it is meant as an insult. Other times a playful off color jab/joke. I have had a lifetime of humor and insults from squeaky clean to down and dirty. How I interpret the intent depends on the source. How I respond depends on my sense of humor at the moment. I am fairly immune to insults. The more scathing, the funnier I generally find them. My responses are generally never intended to really hurt others, but in the harsh reality of the real world, often, some may be offended.
I know you didn't address me, but I occasionally find myself target or ally for some regulars. For me, it's mostly fun conversation. What I most enjoy is when someone let's me know they got a laugh from something I said.
It's only TOTV. Don't take it too seriously.

Because "a picture is worth a thousand words..."

It's a silly little "prison joke" regarding "dropping the soap"...

A response to the poster who had a phobia about "prison"...

No insult intended... They make me (and from the responses I've received, others as well) laugh...

That particular meme is a homophobic insult, combined with a "criminals suck" insult, combined with a "I have nothing to contribute to this conversation so I'll post someone else's insulting thoughts" contribution.

Some folks on this forum think this is funny. Some are insulted. Some roll their eyes, and some pity the poster who does this because - they are not capable of contributing to discussions and always resort to backhanded insults or insulting memes.

Not everyone is like that, and I'm not singling anyone out on this. More than one member does this kind of thing.

My only disagreement is that, IMHO, criminals (career types) usually do kinda suck.

And a certain particular post is a "look at me, look at how self righteous I am!" insult...

Claustrophobia....hate elevators. If one ever got stuck I'd have a heart attack. Once walked down 9 flights of stairs because the elevator got so crowded on way down.https://giphy.com/gifs/animated-gif-blender-claustrophobia-26ufb6CvKk7gnsFoY

I'm claustrophobic too. I havent been to The Villages yet and i'm afraid of the houses being too close together...LOL. Silly, i know. Or maybe this fear is called something else.
