Toilet paper is expensive. Here’s a hint. You can cut your cost for the stuff by 50% if you use both sides.

Serious reply:

I like Walmart's "strong and soft" generic store brand, you can buy a double-sized 9-pack for a reasonable price.

Hubby prefers what I like to call sandpaper - thin and scritchy. So I get that at Staple's, they also have their own brand, there's like 20 double-rolls for under $20 when it's on sale, and for most men - that's almost a year's worth.

I had a full new package of them plus around half a package when we moved down, so we didn't even come CLOSE to running low during the pandemic when you couldn't get any TP from any store or online anywhere at any price.

Just walk a few steps into the bathtub/shower and do a quicky minute rinse with a small amount of soap. Way cheaper than toilet paper and you don't need to spend huge amount of money on a bidet. Bidets do break down with all their intricate working parts, and replacement is not cheap, as compared to replacing a showerhead.

True story. When I worked on Saudi Arabia building military bases, the "Bedouins" were drafted from the desert to serve in the military. They had always used rocks instead of toilet paper. The toilets in the barracks were soon getting clogged up with rocks, so they had a training session on how to use toilet paper. Shortly after that, the toilets started getting clogged up with rocks wrapped in toilet paper.

Ug, one of the “hole in the walls” I never want to return to. I had to use the “public restroom” from time to time there. Most on this board couldn’t make it past the entrance to the public facilities. The SMELL…the condition etc. Believe me, perfume can’t cover everything.

This brings to mind the hand they chop off from thieves at “Chop Chop Square”. The right hand is taken; because it is used to wipe with and then hosed off.

Kohbar Towers in SA was built for the Bedoins but they refused to live there. Beautiful multi level buildings with hardwood floors. Left vacant until it was offered to billet the US military during the first Gulf War. Toilet plumbing wouldn’t accept t.p. So used T.p. Was placed in trash bags. Yes over there the locals did use their left hands and a water rinse to clean their bums

Charmin leaves dust all over the bathroom floor. Cottonelle is actually the best but isn’t as biodegradable as it should be. Please do not use Flushable wipes because they are not actually flushable. They might make it passed your pipes but they don’t break down and create problems down the sewer lines.

We bought a bidet about 5 years ago.
It was about $600.
It does a much better job than toilet paper.
It washes, dries, and if you are having a problem, it even has a setting for an enema.
If saving money is your goal, that is the way I would go.

Was seriously considering a bidet the last few years. Just haven't followed through and tried it yet.

Started using a bidet while in Japan on business. Just about every toilet there has one, even hotels. Both of my toilets have bidet seats and it's the best thing ever for the health and well being of your nether region. I bought Brondell Washlet 300's. Only complexity is you need a dedicated outlet near the toilet to plug it in.

Traveling in Thailand you learn that the hotels, malls, etc. of the larger cities have bathroom facilities as modern as anything in the world but that in small-town and rural Thailand things are somewhat different. The traditional toilets are still common: a flat ceramic hole in the floor with two footpads, over which you squat and do your thing. Some of the larger ones have rows of stalls, walls but no doors, with a slow-flowing trough of water flowing by the front of each ceramic fixture. The whole place is built at a slight tilt so the water does actually run, albeit quite slowly. Thais use the left-hand method, rinsing in the trough. Always best to be in a stall as far upstream as possible. You flush with a small pitcher of water scooped from the trough.

A concession to the farang who visit: no toilet paper is supplied but they assume you bring your own (you only forget once). They supply a small container for used paper.

Chanel #5, it is not…

There is a former travelling professor of German and English who taught in various cities in China who described some of the toilets in China and some of them sound like those in the rural areas of Thailand. The man lives in the Villages.
