Can advertiser posts be blocked? There is one who posts about 4-5 times a week and the subject line never says what the post is about.
23 posts this month alone and only one time has anyone responded.
Clickbait.

Have you tried adding the user to your ignore list?
Or, are you asking whether a thread can be made to not appear if a particular user creates it? (I don't think this is possible)

I've never felt the need to block anyone before so not clear how to do it.

Click on the small arrow next to their name
Select "View Public Profile"
Click on "User Lists"
Then Add to Ignore List
You will still see that they have commented but you will not see the text of their comment. It isn't the ideal answer but for me it saves some screen space and some aggravation.

Click on "user settings" and then "edit ignore list". Add the name, and click on okay.

Previous replies have provided the method to block someone, and to answer your specific questions, yes you can block an advertiser, they will still show up as a new message, but you will not be able to see the message.

Done! I did not know advertisers could be blocked. Some of them burn me up. Thank you to the posters who pointed out they could.

We enjoy content.
Advertisers pay the bill. No such thing as a free lunch. Surprised starship troopers haven't shown up
