View Full Version : Pitch clock

I watched a few games today as I wanted to see the impact of the pitch clock which requires the pitcher to pitch within 15 seconds if no one is on base and 20 seconds if there is a runner on base.
It does speed up the game. I checked the time for some games and several were played in about 2.5 hours.
For the past several years, the average length of a game had been a little over 3 hours so the pitch clock appears to have a significant impact on the time of the game.
That seems like a good idea.

I liked the quickened pace. If there is a drawback to it, it's that it often doesn't allow enough time for the production crew to que up and show a replay. Good thing we can rewind on today's TV's. lol

I'll be honest and ask. When did this pitch clock rule come to be? I don't watch baseball regularly and was surprised to now see it.

It started this year. Other changes are the elimination of the shift and larger bases. The bases are increased from 15 by 15 to 18 by 18 which means that home plate is now three inches closer to first and third base, while the corner bases are now 4 1/2 inches closer to second base. Even though it isn't much, there are a lot of close plays in baseball.

A faster pace game is much appreciated. I even think 9 innings is too long. I'd slim it back to 8. But I know traditionalists would HATE that!

If you want to shorten the game, you must love the extra inning rule where they put a runner on second base!!

It also puts a time limit on the batter for stepping into the batter's box. If they don't step in within the time limit, its an automatic strike.

went to a spring training game. . I am NOT a baseball fan. . been to less than 10 MLB games in my life. . .
Speeding up the game is good for TV scheduling , no one else and nothing else.. except for maybe the alcoholics who get cut off earlier
the vendors make less money,
at the cost of the seats and food these days, the longer the game the more worthwhile the one attendance is going to be, the more game you see. .
now granted, it is a boring game design, a three man dual, until someone succeeds in their goal. . . a pitching duel is for the super fan only. ..
nascar going in circles, also boring. . . . .
as our family has always said, its more fun to play than to watch any and all of them

Where is Bob Gibson when you need him? More pitchers like Bob and there would be no need for a pitch clock.
