The equipment is a large ball with a drum-like stand and sticks. Is there a rec center with some extra sets to loan out so a person can give cardio drumming a try before investing in the bulky set?

Just go to a session, ready to give it a try. The leader usually asks if there are visitors, and drummers who want a rest will offer to let you step in and play thru a song or two.

Oh what a good suggestion. Thanks.

When I tried it there was extra balls on the floor that I was able to use, and I brought my own dowels that I bought at Walmart for a couple bucks.

If you decide to do it regularly, look into getting a good set of taiko bachi (sticks).

I am trying to buy the drum, stand and drum sticks, but can't find any. Is there anyone who has this equipment but no longer uses it, so they might be willing to sell it to me? Thank you.

Walmart sells the bucket and ball for under $30 for both. You can even pick your own colors. I know our instructor sold sticks for $5 a set.
