Sorry for my ignorance, what is the WD-40 for with relation to the love bugs? A repellant or you bath in it so they slide off???

I was just thinking about them today (not in TV yet) is this (or Pam) a preventative for them sticking to the windshields or an easier way to clean them off?

And speaking of windshields (golf carts in particular) is it better to have a solid windshield vs. a rollup?

You wouldn’t want to use something containing petroleum like WD40 on a windshield. It would ruin wiper blades on a car and not be good for an acrylic or polycarbonate golf cart windshield. To each their own, but I would never have a one piece golf cart windshield, the windshield on my cart is flipped down almost 100% of the time it’s not pouring rain out. Also, I hate tinted golf cart windshields, very difficult to see at night when raining and the tinting is worthless for me because if it’s sunny out it’s flipped down.

For golf carts you really don't need anything. I've lived here for 16 years and never had a love bug stick to my cart. I do love my golf cart screen during love bug seasons (May & September). Also, love bugs seem to really like anything that is white. Wear darker clothes!

35 years of love bugging here. The best solution I've found is to hose off the main bodies then with a bucket and wet dryer sheets, scrub the rest off and hose again.

Dryer sheets work the best in getting them off. You just need to wipe the white film off when done

RainX for the windshield. Two coats of polish for the front end of the car. Wipe off at the end of the trip with a damp cloth.

Ah, love-bug season is approaching. Interesting facts are that they were NOT created in a lab to control the mosquito population, they did migrate here around 1920. The female flies into a swarm of males and then they “fly united”. Remember that commercial for United Airlines? Anyway, the male soon dies and the female flies with the male’s abdomen still attached…gross. The milky mess they leave behind is actually their eggs. They do not bite and they are attracted to light colors. They are also attracted to car emissions. The mess they leave will eat into your car’s paint so remove it quickly. Try using dryer sheets. It’s an inexpensive way to remove them. And on a positive note, they didn’t seem all that bad last year.

Place a very wet beach towel over the bugged up area. Come back 15-20 mins later and it easily wipes off.

Maybe the severity or nuisance factor depends on which village you’re in? I experienced a mild version when I first moved here in two years ago so this year is my third spring but I haven’t found it to be bad at all.

Best way is wet car with hose. Use damp dryer sheet. No scrubbing needed just rub like wiping something of your counter tops in kitchen. Also works great on tar removal. Rinse with hose.

.....If you are driving long distances in Florida, you also have the problem of dead love bugs on your windshield. So, you need to have your windshield cleaner filled up and have some rags ready to stop and get streaks off your windshield.

Yep, works well, but why buy "PAM"... LOL, when a no name cheap brand works just as good...LOL ! People use Coke, but that takes a lot more work and doubt it does anything FOR the paint job ~

Nope, native Floridian here can tell you WD-40 since it is non toxic, natural ( actually a fish product, the lower quality fish oil NOT suited to sell retirees for their "health", is actually used in WD-40. Pam and most cooking oil sprays are fine, they will not do harm. If you've been in Florida a long time now, I am really surprised you still recommend Vaseline, but we all have our favs that work for us. Olive oil probably won't hurt your auto if you get it off the light/white cars completely. And it's a little pricey for this kind of use, but again, to each their own preference. We were brought up in South Florida to use a natural non toxic like WD, so we use that because it's worked so well, east to apply, and does not leave the residue of olive oil, or that Vaseline (petroleum) could. Never done that so not saying yea or nay.

There are ABSOLUTELY "horrific" love bug years, and there are "light" love bug years, it's not the village you are in at all. It's like red tide, and hurricanes, and droughts... you get the heavy years, and the "light" years... so perhaps soon, you will be able to experience a "bad" love bug year.... LOL, but, it will pass in a month ! Now if they bit, like mosquitos for instance, we'd probably never survive one May !

If you spray the front of an auto or golf cart, makes cleaning off VERY easy and actually many do not stick at all. You can probably think of other things to use that don't harm paint, but WD was the only thing used in Florida in the "old days", non toxic fish product, no danger if you get in on your skin, it "natural", so if you have doubts about things like petroleum, or chemicals in silicone products, it's something that works. Another old remedy we were brought up with in Florida for No-See-Ums that would "swarm" on greens and on our beaches at times, was Skin So Soft by Avon. Don't see Avon as much any more, but it definitely worked !

That is INTERESTING. I was thinking that the spray part of the oil in WD 40 would be able to act like a solvent and HURT the car's paint. I notice when I get WD-40 on my hands that it feels harsher than Vaseline or olive oil. I assume we would have to get an expert chemist that knows WD-40 well to pass a "summary judgment" on the possibility of it acting as a solvent to paint. If we had a small quantity of oil-based paint and added WD-40, I am sure that they would blend together. But, then again, today's automotive paints are water-soluble. So, ?????

Yes, WD-40 works great on Love Bug splat. It’s extra work & washing & waxing your car but WD-40 gets the splat off the finish of the car! Same thing in S. Carolina.

I have been using Bugs-B-Gone for years on all sorts of bugs and tar on my cars. Spray it on and wipe it off, they are gone.

Spray hydrogen peroxide on the car. Bugs bubble up and almost slide off. Rinse and repeat if necessary.
