I can only answer part of your question. There are two in my neighborhood in France. They make no noise whatsoever and do an excellent job. However, this is thin-bladed glass like you find in northern US, not the thick-bladed grass in Florida.


I don't know the brands. It's not possible to see the name from the sidewalk. Perhaps someone in TV will have a better answer for you.

We have one in our neighborhood that has been in use for a few years and it seems to do a good job on the St. Augustine that we have here, it looks just as good as their neighbors lawns. Can't help you with the brand.

My neighbor has the Husqvarna one. I believe it's $2500. It seems to work ok. They have it set to cut multiple times per week since St Augustine grass is tough as nails. It definitely doesn't do the whole job though. They have a guy that needs to trim the edges that the robot mower can't get to.

At Lowes in lady lake, there is an excellent employee who gives you the in and outs about every lawn item in existence. The ones they sell, and any brand they don’t. When we lost our 9th lawn company, due to lack of mowing, and still sending bills, we decided to mow our own.

But grass in Florida isn’t the same as our beloved Kentucky Blue Grass. So with little knowledge of the crunchy, sharp, wide blade running grass, we went to an expert.

The robot mowers are handy, but if the model will only mow the same way every time, within a month you will have permanent tracks in the lawn. At $2500 and above, the mower does a good job, but will need to be run about every 3-4 days to keep up with the dense St A grass.

Gave us suggestions, and pointed our gas works better on ST A grass, as does the higher end electric. Since we didn’t want to store gas, we bought at his recommendation the middle ego model. Battery is about an hour, and can mow one of our properties in 45 minutes, and the other in hour and 15. So quick charge, while I edge and blow lawn ( both ego) and finish last few swipes. Does an excellent job, and walking behind is better excuse than no exercise.

Interesting, but never heard of a robot mower. Are they safe? Most Villagers have a service for their lawns. That can get expensive.

There is a home near our northern home where the grass has been mowed by a robot for years. The lot appears to be about 1 1/2 acres and the robot is out mowing virtually every time I ride past. It does a beautiful job. I have seen the owner go through a couple of brands as they likely wear out with that much mowing. I believe his current brand is Husqvarna.

friend of ours owns a mower shop, here's what he has told me. They can wander, if they do you'll be trying to find it. They use a dog fence of sorts, there is a wire you have to place on the edges of your yard and areas to not cut. The wire can and will come lose blow 'off course' and the unit can sometimes run over it. The cut isn't like you would anticipate, aka not uniform. Sometimes it will go back and forth and then it may not. I don't recall one model he mentioned that left the yard looking like a 3 yr old tried to cut it.

We have very little to cut here, had enough of lawn guys at our other florida house so I talked to him and then went out and bought a ryobi 21" battery mower that mulches. best thing I've bought in a while. works great no gas and it has drive wheels

Many have gotten tired of lawn companies not showing up, especially once summer hits. Four hours a month mowing my lawn, saves me after buying mower $1600 on one house, and $1300 on other house per year. Plus I mow when lawn needs it, not every other week in the winter months

I don’t have one but I’ve looked into them a bit as mowing my yard of 11,000 sq ft gets a lot less enjoyable during the summer months. Especially mowing it twice a week during that time.

My neighbor has one and he likes it. It’s a WORX brand , I believe. He said it can get hung up at times in some places. I looked into the Husqvarna mowers. They have several models for various sized lawns. They’re designed to cut nearly every day except when it’s docked and charging. They are able to cut grass at various heights and are very quiet.

I think I’ve ruled it out for now because I like the exercise value of my push mower and my yard is beautiful. Would hate to see that change because a robot cut it 😎

A robot mower can cut any grass just as well as traditional one …. Just as long as it has equal powered motor/engine. They work great in open areas with no obstructions.

They do not do edging. They are not good when the situation of your yard changes (your kids shoes or toys are left in the yard, dropped palm fronds etc etc).

If you have a large area to mow, and don’t mind picking up the shoes, toys, branches before starting the robot mower it will work well, Then while it works, you mow around the edges and difficult parts.

If you just want the robot mower to do it all while you are away, you will most likely not be satisfied.

I looked into them, but not for very long. After the high cost, having to bury the wire, and how much I would have to move it around (back to front, two area in front), just decided to buy a battery powered mower and do it myself. I agree, the lawn care services around here are pretty bad/inconsistent. And if you are a part-timer, you will at some point get calls from your neighbors about how they aren't mowing it. But of course, still sending you the bill.

Not something I recommend, but saw a YouTube video where the homeowner tied a rope to a tree, and the other end to his self-propelled mower. He strapped down the dead man switch and let it go. It went in a progressively shrinking circle, mowing the grass as the rope wrapped around the tree.

If nothing else, you would be the talk of your neighborhood for a few weeks.

Issue with these is need to install wire boundary markers in the lawn while some models may have more sensors to avoid that need. Capacity varies, size of area to cover, priced accordingly. These devices only clip a little off the top, lacking a large debris bin, and are designed to be run frequently as a result.

We have the Husqvarna mower. The first one we got was a smaller because we had zoysia grass and it is very low thin grass. Mower worked great. You lay a wire about 4" from the curb and walkways and about 4" deep. At first our mower would end up outside the curb and neighbors would let us know he was "stuck" in the gutter. Mower will stop if it is too far over the wire. That is when we realized that you can adjust how far the mower goes over the wire. We made the adjustment.

It has a GPS and alarm if picked up without putting in your code. We had it for about 4 years, worked great. Then we switched to St. Augustine grass and got the same model just a larger one to cut thicker grass. You can put layers bricks or such decor to prevent having to "trim" a lot. Wife does most of the trimming. However, lawn guys have offered to do just a trim job whenever they are doing the lawns in the area. Reasonable price, but spouse likes that part of the yard work. Wire is laid wherever you don't want it to cross. We only find it necessary to loop around the yard. You can run the wire across the drive, like a little pathway and mower will cross over to do the other side of the drive. We did that at first and then decided mower spent too much time crossing our large drive. We cut out that part of the loop.

Now we just carry mower over to that area when we want it mowed. Mower works in any weather. We run it from around 6 pm to 7am. Remember it takes time-out to recharge the battery during those runs. It is an auto so we just set him to run when sprinkler are off and at night. Mower runs until it is time to recharge and it goes back to its charge station and renews its power and back out it goes again. It has a start time and when to be finished. You can decide where you want the charging station to be. It is a about 3 feet square space to take up. Depending on the size mower you get. When we got our first one we had. to call to get a code to set it up. We now have been using an auto mower for about eight or nine years and it has saved a lot of money and cross contamination from other lawns dropped seeds. That is probably the best advantage of having an auto-mower; you do not get the insect and weed contamination from other lawns that the mower services carry on their mowers.

Given all the cost & effort detailed above, it makes little sense. It would take me 42 months just break even, and I would still have to trim and blow the clippings.

I did the grass this morning, 21” Greenworks pro 80v self propelled, mulches, took 25 minutes. Average designer sized lot. I had to wait for the dew this morning to dry up a bit. I have St Augustine at the back and zoysia at the front. The St Augustine grows twice as fast for some reason. The professional mowers started before me and are still out there after 3 hours but they are doing 4 houses or more. And they are carefully edging and blowing wondering why I am not golfing instead. I did that yesterday.
