In some circles of government, words like "terrorist" are even verboten.
Hardly a comedian in the world, would risk mouthing a "Polish Joke".
We're not supposed to identify folks, based on their sexual preference or even their "birth gender/sex". Essentially, it's no longer deemed proper to identify people based on their lifestyle choices.
The acceptable stereotyping of our youth, has gone by the boards.
Aren't words like: "yankee", "northerner", "snowbirds", etc., used in the same sort of derogatory way, unacceptable stereotyping?
I read and hear those words every day in The Villages, used almost exclusively as a pejorative.

There are a lot of changes and some people accept them and others do not. Just look at the current Bud Light situation as many refuse to drink or carry Bud products because they used a transgender person in their advertising. I have an issue with so many wanting to change or erase history because things don’t fit into todays standards, this can’t be done but people try. History is history, right or wrong it happened and you can’t change it. A current pet peeve is calling a master bedroom a primary bedroom because master reminds people of slaves. Yes slavery was wrong but it has nothing to do with a master bedroom. What is next, changing the name of The Masters golf tournament, is there no end? My wife and I have always been in acceptance of all people as we are all part of the human race and that is what counts.

But look how CNN reports different incidents...
Apparently, one is a racial crime, the other is not...

Our son in law works for one of the hoity toity Ivy league colleges up north and can’t refer to anyone by anything that implies gender, so he refers to his employees as team members. He once referred to his group of employees as y’all, figuring that is gender neutral and wouldn’t offend anyone. An employee filed a complaint with Human Resources because y’all is considered a southern term and therefore supports slavery? WTF, it’s getting to the point where people are afraid to speak! It must really suck trying to be a comedian these days, all you can do is make fun of yourself.

I believe the change to primary bedroom has more to do with the fact that more single women are buying homes and master refers to a man who is in charge, in this case of his family and that was his room, in his house. The term master was used in the military well before slavery.

This is a great topic. Here we live in the most successful retirement community and fastest growing county in the United States populated by some of the most successful people in the country; are we really going to knuckle under to the insane norms of the PC language norms? At this age, I really could care less if someone is offended by my language provided that I speak with familiar terms that identify people that are not intended to be disrespectful. I won't encourage PC by bowing down to it. The Cancel Culture is destroying our traditional American values and being assertive in your speech is one way to fight back. Hope "Y"ll have a great American Day".

The direction allthis is headed is a result of the long standing American necessity of nice what was called politically correct or as I call it lying. As i compare my old dictionary (I'm glad I kept it) to what is online today in webster etc.... they have changed definitions in many things to (IMHO) back up the rhetoric that is being thrown at us.
I think the cancel culture, gender pronouns, and such are nothing more than a generation that can't cope with life. Spoiled and entitled, their parents are the ones to blame for all this nonsense. History is history, embrace it as that history is what made this country what it is today, erase it and you are telling me you have zero respect for everything within our borders no matter what it is.
While all this can easily be stopped, Americans as a whole say a lot but don't back it up - note the last 2 elections..... embarassing

Garywt: reading your post I thought my hubby was talking to me & I to him. You are right on respect others, history is history cannot erase it be it right or wrong. Must stay on the books & teach our children. I was born in a country where slavery rampart, famine imposed by another country lost millions of people including my own relatives. But we must move on because it’s history and hopefully learned from it. “What goes around comes around” or “the law of cause & affect”

The media's bias problem affects more than just CNN, and many Americans have caught on. According to a new Gallup study, 86 percent of Americans believe media outlets are politically biased, with 56 percent of Americans saying their own go-to news source has "a great deal" or "a fair amount" of bias. Maybe this helps explain why a record 33 percent of Americans in 2020 put no trust at all in media. There's two ways for cable news to drive a politician out of office. One is to fairly report on a corrupt politician's egregious abuses of the responsibility voters have placed in them. For example, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo could have asked his brother, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, why he was forcing elderly people with COVID into nursing homes which was agreaves. mass media to report the news fairly and accurately -- up from 28 percent only the year before.

That's all comedians should do...make fun of themselves. I never thought jokes made at the expense of others was humorous. I remember a clown at Sea World who would walk behind people and make fun of the way they looked, the way they walked, etc. Some in the audience laughed but it made me very uncomfortable and I thought it was cruel.

Could it be we are evolving as a nation? Think of the words that were common place years ago. Colored became black to Afro-American. Miss, Mrs. became Ms. White has become Euro-American. More diversity in advertising, etc. the list goes on and on. There was a time blacks and females weren’t permitted to vote. One can only guess what was being talked about when these changes were taking place. As Bob Dylan wrote, “these times they are a changin.” Each generation goes through it. As example, your parents yelled to you to turn that music down, how can you listen to that garbage. Now, the parents today complain about their kids music.

I guess Dutch Masters cigars would be made taboo now, if all things tobacco were not already taboo.
Still, the Florida legislature worries me, outlawing “Drag Shows” if children might see them. A friend of mine used to travel the country as a musician, playing his bagpipes at festivals, parades, policemen’s funerals, etc, if full kilt and highland regalia . Now in Florida he would be arrested and those sponsoring the events he performed at would be pilloried, fined, and who knows what else.

To me, having been in Florida since 1964, "snowbird" was a common term applied to anyone who came south for the winter to escape the cold. It was not derogatory or ill-meaning. However, "yankee" and "northerner" were terms almost always used while driving - and they meant "someone from up north who didn't drive the way we drive" (right or wrong). I don't think snowbird is a bad term, just a descriptive term. Maybe change it to "winter-challenged folk"?

If you have a problem with me using the terms"she, her, ma'am, miss, etc." then that is your problem. The same with "he, him, sir, mister, etc." I would think it would be more derogatory to use "it" as a replacement for those terms. I do not believe in "non-binary" as a gender, so it will be up to you to correct me if I address you wrong. If I can't tell the difference in your gender, then that's also on you. If you are gay or whatever you wish to be categorized as and wish my respect, then what's up with the idiotic "Gay Pride" parades where folks parade around dressed silly and act silly? In my opinion, there should be a charge of "Fraud" whenever someone fills out an official document using the wrong gender (one other than they were born with). This is my opinion, and like something else, everyone has one. When I was a child, the "N" word was forbidden and a threat of being punished if I used the word. However, "negro" was proper and acceptable. Then we were told that we should use the word "black." Now, it's African-American. An Indian is a person from India and a native of America is an Indigenous. A coworker once described himself as an African-American and I responded that I was an Euro-American. He frowned at me as if I was making fun of him. Honestly, he was probably right, because it seemed it was perfectly acceptable for him to call me a "cracker." Although, I was not and still am not insulted by the term "cracker." I've also noticed that ALL newer TV programs and movies MUST have a mixed black and white family, or else must be gay. And even though a straight family is presumed to sleep together intimately, gays must be portrayed making out to prove that they are "gay." Call me a prude, but I do not feel that in order to make an entertaining program, there must be sex in it. The plot must be pretty weak if the show must have sex to keep the audiences attention. Once again, my opinion. Thank goodness I am old enough to get away with disregarding a lot of today's 'Progress."

I think that calling the largest bedroom the PRIMARY BEDROOM is fine with me. It seems to be a better description than MASTER bedroom. Plus it avoids any unpleasantness associated with the term MASTER. I think that it is the least the Caucasians can do to avoid reminding BLACKS of that unfortunate era in US HISTORY that I as a Caucasian can't be proud of. It may SEEM like a little thing to a Caucasian, but it might be an unnecessary reminder to a black person that they were once a 2nd class citizen.
..........In today's touchy environment, many things are driving various groups apart. I would like to do my best to REPAIR any frictional situations. So, I am fine with the change to the PRIMARY bedroom.

I was amazed when the judge, in the Rittenhouse case, wouldn't let the prosecutors use the word "victim" referring to the people he shot.
That is because Kyle was the victim defending himself and others. The men he shot were murderous thugs.

I feel that it would be going TOO far to ban Y'all.

Now in Florida he would be arrested and those sponsoring the events he performed at would be pilloried, fined, and who knows what else.
can you say, you are overreaching?

This is a great topic. Here we live in the most successful retirement community and fastest growing county in the United States populated by some of the most successful people in the country; are we really going to knuckle under to the insane norms of the PC language norms? At this age, I really could care less if someone is offended by my language provided that I speak with familiar terms that identify people that are not intended to be disrespectful. I won't encourage PC by bowing down to it. The Cancel Culture is destroying our traditional American values and being assertive in your speech is one way to fight back. Hope "Y"ll have a great American Day".
The "cancel culture" is NOT destroying my traditional American values because I don't have a CLUE as to WHO or WHAT is meant by "cancel culture". Does that involve BOOK banning .........that might be one way to cancel a culture?

As i compare my old dictionary (I'm glad I kept it) to what is online today in webster etc.... they have changed definitions in many things to (IMHO) back up the rhetoric that is being thrown at us.

History is history, embrace it as that history is what made this country what it is today, erase it and you are telling me you have zero respect for everything within our borders no matter what it is.
While all this can easily be stopped, Americans as a whole say a lot but don't back it up - note the last 2 elections..... embarassing
People may call today's generation spoiled and entitled, but the reality is that I feel sorry for today's generation. Something like 50% of them has serious mental problems. Some 20% have contemplated suicide. They are NOT running around as happy campers. When they go to school they might get shot at school or on a bus to school or walking to school. There are drug dealers to avoid. We never had those kinds of problems.

Your "troll" question was actually this:
Aren't words like: "yankee", "northerner", "snowbirds", etc., used in the same sort of derogatory way, unacceptable stereotyping?
To me, having been in Florida since 1964, "snowbird" was a common term applied to anyone who came south for the winter to escape the cold. It was not derogatory or ill-meaning. However, "yankee" and "northerner" were terms almost always used while driving - and they meant "someone from up north who didn't drive the way we drive" (right or wrong). I don't think snowbird is a bad term, just a descriptive term. Maybe change it to "winter-challenged folk"?
I’ve been visiting, renting or living here for 19 years. It wasn’t derogatory until forums like this gave bullies an anonymous voice.

So these 2 polish guys go deer hunting. They walk for about an hour and then spot a very very large buck with a large rack of horns. They both fire and put him down. They start dragging him by the feet back to their pick-up truck. After about 1/2 hour, one stops and says, the rack of horns keeps catching on the bushes and trees. It would be a lot easier to drag the deer by the antlers so it wouldn't get stuck along the way. The other hunter agrees. After 2 more hours of dragging the buck, they stop to rest. One hunter says, you know, I think we are getting farther away from the truck.
One man asks another, why are so many Italians named Tony? The man answers, the boats of immigrants went past the Statue of Liberty, docked and let all the passengers off.
- “idiotic gay pride parades” Why do you have to call them idiotic?
And….yes he frowned at you because he felt you were making fun of him. He was telling you how he identifies because as you said in your first paragraph, you can’t know how someone identifies. You did indicate that it was up to people to correct you. He was doing that.
I’m glad you noticed that people of all races are finally being represented. Great! We don’t have those couple token shows like Sanford and Son or the Jeffersons like the old days. PROGRESS! Now even Euro-Americans can be on a show written and produced by black or African-American writers/producers.
So, to be clear, if you get Alzheimer’s and put the wrong thing on a form should that be considered fraud with a conviction?

You intentionally speak in a way you know some will find offensive. That doesn't sound any different than INTENTIONALLY trying to offend someone.
And in the times when you don't tell someone to grow thicker skin and you actually do apologize, you don't change your mind on what you said. It sounds like your apology takes the form of, "I'm sorry you get offended at what I say."

Hush yo mouth about evolution. Don't you know the only good times, were the times in the 1950's? When them colored folk new their place, irish were cops or maids, eye-talians were only good for gambling and keeping the cops busy, and mexicans picked oranges in the groves, period.
The only people who had value were white folks - and even then, men were running things. Married women weren't allowed to have their own bank account, their husbands had to co-own the account, and they weren't allowed to have their own credit cards. There was no assisted living - you either died at home or you went into a "home" where you were given laudanum so you wouldn't notice how miserable you were, until you died an undignified death in your own excrement and bedsores.
Women who didn't marry were called "spinsters" and lived with the shame of being unsuitable as wives, while men who didn't marry were called "bachelors" and clapped on the back for being free-spirited.
Most families didn't own more than one car per household - and why would they need more? The wives stayed home, the husbands worked, the milk was delivered to the house.
Everyone and their brother had polio. Thalidomide, taken as a miracle anti-nausea drug for pregnant women, was the most notable cause 10s of thousands of deformities and deaths in newborns. Tuburculosis, influenza, and pneumonia were fast killers of millions of Americans during that decade, and smoking was advertised and encouraged as a healthy and healthful habit.
A 1949 advertisement for Viceroy cigarettes claimed dentists recommended them for healthy teeth.
So much awesome in the 1950's right? We should return to the good ole days and never try to improve on our species, or its vocabulary.

Why on earth is he concerned about being arrested?

I think the point the OP was making is that Snowbird, Yankee and Notherner may be derogatory terms yet we use them freely here in TV. Being a Southern girl I use the terms as terms of endearment and sometimes as a derogatory term.
Thank you for reading and understanding my point.
The fact that there are 7 pages of responses and only (2) people understood my simple, basic English, speaks volumes about the reading and comprehension ability of Villagers. I suppose you could consider my conclusion "stereotyping", but the facts seem to warrant the conclusion.
(I don't think the terms "Snowbird", "Yankee" or "Northerner" are inherently pejorative, they just always seem to be used that way in TV (& perhaps other places I don't frequent).

Exactly.

Ironic. To label the team with a derogatory adjective and persist using that name, implies openly bullying anyone who doesn’t agree with those views.
Ah the old days when we all could be open racists. Sickening.
Amen! We need more opinions like this to squelch out the over abundant racist views on Talk of The Villages.
Well that would be confusing to your friends.
How do you stand all that body wagging? Must be hard for you. :cryin2:
Was that a humble opinion? Sounded the opposite of humble. Spoiled, entitled. I didn’t hear humble words. Regardless, It also sounds like you do not stand by your own words and want to erase the current history. The old history is written. You may not like the current history, and may want to stick to your degrading dictionary, but gender pronouns and cancel culture are history: todays history. Ignorance is blind.
You mean that other people would like the focus to go away from white privileged males to anyone else? God forbid!
It’s not clear why you think asking that question is hard. It’s no harder than asking what’s your birthdate or address. It’s only hard if it’s met with difficult remarks from judgemental people.

Everything on Google is 100% true, 100% of the time, except when it’s not.
The issue at large is that they want the American language to stop elevating males, while demoralizing women. You can call your grandpa, forefather, gramps, ancestor or even grandfather. It’s okay.

Jokes aside. You are correct. We have been raised with many biases. We will likely all insert those biases at some point, BUT we don’t have to be complacent and stay stagnant when the world around us provides us new information about our behavior.
"The tragedy of life is not found in failure but complacency. Not in you doing too much, but doing too little. Not in you living above your means, but below your capacity. It's not failure but aiming too low, that is life's greatest tragedy." ~ Benjamin E. Mays
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
"Complacency is the forerunner of mediocrity. You can never work too hard on attitudes, effort and technique." ~ Don Meyer[/QUOTE]

That was a VERY clever and informative post. It may go down in TOTV history as one of the best ever!

OK, so admittedly this is somewhat of a troll.
I know better than to think the conversation will remain civil, but I'm curious.
In today's world, we'd be pummeled for characterizing a person of color, as a ... (insert your own adjective).
We surely don't call people with physical disabilities, "cripples" or even "handicapped".
Well yes, you are surely opening yourself for who knows what in "backlash". The words you listed can have a very positive meaning (Yankee for instance) but we all know those terms are purposely used in a derogatory manner by many ! If you want to see really mind blowing vitriol around those terms, there is an on line "newspaper" for news in the villages. The comments section after each "article" is shocking to say the least, gives you an idea of not only what "some" residents of the villages think of "snowbirds", "Yankees", etc. but some others (who appear to live in the areas outside the villages) are very blunt about how they not only wish none of them would never come here, but wish them "vanish permanently" (?? don't like the sounds of that at all, some get quite graphic).
My opinion of your question: to me people have become much more angry, nasty, suspicious, or just much less gracious and accepting as peopled USED to be in any retirement community. I am not sure what has "caused" this, I suspect it's a variety of circumstances: influx of people entering our country illegally, fear of American citizens who come from locations, philosophies, and cultures vastly different from the once rural, laid back, very hospitable, slow paced, area here where the Villages has been built. I personally believe people have changed as a result of the Covid pandemic also. Inside the Villages, some denigrate the "groups" you named because they believe they are somehow being cheated by part time people using the amenities of the community, and, if you read the stark opinions of "some" local residents in the small communities around us, they "lump" all village residents into a group they see as wealthy (?), "uppity" "untitled" "snobs" "drunken" "elites". Not a good perception of the retired, hard working, middle class seniors who make up most of the population. To those outside, everyone here is a trust fund idiot who was head of some technology firm and now things they live in some private, guarded, elite community. You just can't change the perceptions in people's minds. Inside the Villages, you have all the resentment of permanent residents, and those who own, and float among, two or more homes. I don't think there is a single root of this, and I don't think it's going to change, "snowbird, yum, tastes like chickin" was a bumper sticker when I was a youngster in Southern Florida, nothing has changed except it has gotten much more hateful and serious. I believe the Villages only reflects what is happening nation wide: outgoing, warm, loving, kind, RESPECTFUL, accepting, caring, concerned, spiritually focused, family oriented, community supporting, happy, the words used for years to describe "Americans", is definitely changing. Notice the responses you see just on this "community bulletin board". If someone is single, or ill, or has some kind of emergency, how many people rush over to offer to mow their lawn, or fix the broken screen, or trim the branch that may be hanging over the neighbor's property ? No, the go to the nearest public forum, the "social media" to complain, but no offer of "can I help you, do you need some help with that ?". I was raised to always extend a helping hand, not criticize and judge.

Basically it was my usual long-winded way of reminding people that the world changes - and its denizens should learn to adapt or become extinct. Most folks in this forum don't even know what the word pronoun MEANS. And yet they're so easily offended by someone else's pronoun choice, that they degrade them, and minimalize them, to make themselves feel better about their ignorance and fear.
You don't have to like that John in Accounting wants to be referred to as "shim" and "sher." But John is the one who gets to call the shots on how people address him. You can refer to him as a "him" out of earshot - or away from where it'll get back to him. But when you publicize your disdain and loathing for all things "shim" and "sher" you basically tell everyone that YOU are the one with the problem. And John ends up feeling shamed because of YOUR lack of compassion.
(You and your being the generic use of the word, not you personally)
Racists will excuse their bad behavior by saying "oh yeah we called them colored people in the 50's, why should we have to change that?" "Oh last week it was African Americans, now it's Blifrakels, we can't keep up" etc. etc. That is what racists say. A civilized human being will say "Okay Tom, you want me to refer to you as a blifrakel, then that's how I'll refer to you from now on."

Sure, I’ll get over my precious self if you post your real name, phone number, and photo. Hiding behind a cloak of anonymity is easy but also cowardly. I’m so over watching all the anonymous bullies on this forum doze people into the ground. Be brave and bold if you are going to criticize people and tell us who you are. I’ll ’listen to anyone with varying opinions until the judging and labeling starts, name calling or bullying. After that I’m just going to look at them as hurt and angry, trying to find their way out of a torrid of emotions by blaming and lambasting everyone else.
Always keep in mind, those who depend on name calling, bullying, judging, and anger, rather than present their "case" using a series of logical (related) steps rather than "emotions"(what the "feel"), actually have no "case" to make, or have a very weak case or point that lacks factual evidence. Those folks who rely on blame, anger, emotion, would be well served NOT to go to law school ... or join a debate team, LOL, as each statement must RELATE to the previous one in LOGICAL fashion ! Sooner or later, you can't support an idea or point on emotion and "shouting" alone. Also, low self-esteem plays a part in the whole "social media" scene. Many of who felt rather invisible and/or unimportant most of their lives, can become what they have always dreamed through the keyboard, push others DOWN so they can feel better about themselves. Seems to work for most.

It's no skin of my nose to call someone however it makes THEM comfortable.
The replacement theory comes into play here. When a #2 or a #3 group has success, then within the #1 group some will applaud that success and say that is social progress and it strengthens America. But there are others that will take a darker response and say, "Wait am I losing my share, my power?"

Yankee and nothener are terms the South calls the North. Usually not terms of endearment when used. Snowbird is a universal and a more accepted term for winter vacationers.
At least we don't hear "carpet *******" anymore.

Take it back! For today you have one unanimous concurrence. I can’t swear by tomorrow tho. I may be tied to a stake in the middle of a mob.
I LOVE the visual imagery! Always avoid a mob - that's what running shoes are for.

Head Master/Mistress at schools is now Head Teacher.
Head Master denotes Male.
Head Mistress denotes Female.
Can't have that.
Life changes, science changes, social science changes, medical science changes.......humans became the dominant species on this planet, NOT by being the strongest or fastest animal.........but by being the most ADAPTIVE.

The real knife in the back with all this was the elimination of Chief Wahoo and saying goodbye to the Cleveland Indians. I mean seriously, is it wrong to be an Indian, a Chief, a Brave or even a Warrior? My hope is one day the Indians come back to play as they were most of my life.

That’s not very cool Tommy. I just said nice to meet ya. I think you misread my reply. I said to call me “your omnipotence,” not troll. Since you are challenging me I would say, why go to all the trouble to focus everyone’s attention on little ole me?
As far as ducking in and out…some of us still work and don’t have hours to waste on here replying to endless daily rants about roundabouts, bad drivers and snowflakes. Boring too. I like to really dig my heels (pun intended as an accessory to your shoe comment) into commentary by racists of many types.
Tommy?
Shirley you jest...

There's already a teacher shortage in Florida. That's why the state government is offering veterans teaching positions. No qualifications necessary.
There is a national teacher shortage...

I could have called you troll like you called me but then I would be doing the same behavior as you. Calling you Tommy just seemed kinder. (Shrug)

Yeah, but it has nothing to do with my name... So go figure...
And you're a self admitted Troll, so I fail to see the problem addressing you as such...

I would suggest you stop the personal attacks and name calling. Your stalker behavior is crossing the line.

There is a national teacher shortage...
If you paid them more money and better benefits there would be a teachers glut
just keep raising salaries until the shortage goes away, simple economics
people today are not concerned with contributing to society at their expense they are concerned with their income
what's a teacher worth if a person selling donuts gets 20$ an hour?

Maybe, or maybe not. There is also a shortage where teachers are very well paid...
just keep raising salaries until the shortage goes away, simple economics
There's also a doctor shortage... Yet they keep paying us less... They say it's "simple economics"...
people today are not concerned with contributing to society at their expense they are concerned with their income
So, are you saying that teachers are more concerned about their income than they are about contributing to society?:confused::confused:
what's a teacher worth if a person selling donuts gets 20$ an hour?
How good are the donuts? :icon_wink:
P.S. My youngest daughter is a teacher... I'm quite familiar with their plight... She is considering leaving the field after just 5 years...

Tell her to hang in there. I did 20 as a middle/high school teacher (7th- 9th) and found every second was worth it.
