If it has a large cylinder that moves up and down, it provides to same function as a flapper. There is a red or yellow gasket at the bottom of the cylinder that is about 4 inches in diameter. Turn off the water, flush, then lift up the cylinder and peel off the gasket. Replace it with a Kohler yellow (not red) gasket that you can buy at Lowes, Home Depot, and ACE Hardware.

I will add to make sure the seat in the porcelain tank is clean of any debris. There are youtube videos on this if you are not sure how to proceed.

I just made that fix with a Kohler replacement part. Easy enough to do.
Be aware, it's not a one piece unit anymore and it's mostly cheap plastic.
There are 3 pieces. The one I had to replace was not the stopper part, but the part that had the "bulb" water shutoff, that wasn't working, and so the water kept filling.

Youtube videos were helpful.

Why only yellow- what is the difference?

Apparently, the red ones break down and do not last as long. At least that is what I have been told.

It may be the case that you get what you pay for.

I replaced one (don't remember the color) with a yellow one from a single-pack. it is still working.

I then bought a two-pack of yellow because it was cheaper than the single. I am now using the second of the two-pack because the first one has already failed.

I bought a spare. This time I got a two-pack of red because it was significantly cheaper than the single yellow. I'm now thinking that may have been a mistake.

I too am old school. Simple standard parts. Well that is long gone. They gotcha by the parts. There should be a brand name on your toilet. Kohler is commonly used and what others have suggested. You can take a picture of what you have and people at Lowes or perhaps a neighbor can help you. It, it is the Kohler it is all PLASTIC PARTS. Changing the large O RING like 4-5 inches a cross the first time takes a bit of force.

UTUBE there are videos for most everything. Kohler there are several. The ballcock. The way mine was done, you need to use the old hose. To change it you need to change the shut off valve.

Once you watch the youtube and know how to access it, after you remove the old gasket from the bottom of the plastic tube, just flip it over to the other side in a pinch, I did that two years ago and it's still going strong.

I "think" the drum that regulates water is different than the flapper.

Yellow and red gaskets .... one is specifically for Kohler and the other fits, I believe Champion and others. The package that contains both colored gaskets will specify which one is for Kohler.

The toilet has a fill valve and a cannister. The cannister is the black cylinder that has a gasket at the bottom. Basically, the gasket performs the same function as the old flapper. The fill valve is located near the flush handle and shuts off when the tank is full. You can develop a slow leak into the bowl if either the fill valve or the gasket malfunctions, but usually, the fill valve will last longer than the gasket.

Well I think the whole issue is & don’t really know what the problem is with your toilet but I possibly think they don’t want you to fix it so they want you to call a plumber. Sorry wasn’t much help but everything is going that way!

Thank you for the knowledge. My expertise only went thru about 1950. The "Old House" we lived in had 8 bathrooms with everything from the tank above the head (not "the" head, but actually above the users head to a flushing rim. You'd pull a chain and gravity would do it's job. The outside work house had a round marble fountain looking thing where several men could stand around it and urinate. At the feet was a brass railing that when stepped on would flush water. The Village had the first sewer system outside of a major city. Having moved here now, I do miss the challenges of an old home I complained about so often. This is what I have become, talking about toilets.

As for the gasket you can get a pack of 2 at Ace. One red and one yellow. The red one is supposed to be for Koehler toilets and yellow for other brands. I kept the yellow one and used it on my other toilet and worked fine. I didn’t see any difference.

Here is a link for a 2-pack of Kohler yellow gaskets for $14.90 on Amazon. They are made specifically for Kohler toilets.

Both of my Koehler toilets were leaking into the bowl and refilling at odd hours. I tried both the red and yellow gaskets. No good. I ended up having to replace the entire flush valve in both toilets. That has seemed to fix the issue. It is my belief that the prior owner of this house used cleaning tablets in the tank which destroyed the valve seal.

* years ago, I replaced all 3 of the cans in my toilets, and put in the good old flapper type, and they are all still working good. I guess these companies change, because the old style lasts to long, not enough parts to sell in the old flapper type.

I prefer the model that lets you adjust the flow rate of the fill. It takes longer but it is much quieter.

Buy a fluidmaster brand rebuild kit at Loews or HD.

The first step is to replace the gasket. If it still leaks, then replace the fill valve mechanism. If you have a Kohler toilet, I prefer to buy genuine Kohler parts from Amazon. They are not much more expensive than the universal parts. It's a good idea to have an extra fill valve and gasket on hand in case you need one.
