Quoted $7,000 to move approx 1200 square feet from Mass. to TV by a moving company. A Google search says to expect to pay $7-8,000 so this about right. I'm aware of PODS and Pack Rat but I don't want to get bombarded by emails and phone calls if I use their online quote tool.
So with the 1200 square feet and the $7,000 in mind, can anyone give me an idea of how much I will save using PODS or Pack Rat? Also- what would it cost to hire people to load and unload the container.
Thanks!

I sold everything I owned and bought new stuff. Best decision I ever made. $7,000+ will buy a lot of new stuff to replace your old stuff.

Back in 2012, mind you. I used a POD.
I hired a couple local guys and it was a couple/few hundred bucks for the day.
I brought the very fragile small things and keepsakes in the car.
The POD was $2,ooo- $2,500 , I think, at the time, not sure what they run now.
Another couple guys and couple hundred dollars to unload it.
Total cost was about $3K
$7,000 is probably about right for a full service move.
Best wishes.

We had full service movers (Wheaton) for just under $7K. We packed most things in boxes ourselves. Thankfully we had full coverage with 0 deductible and full replacement. They damaged most of the furniture in some way. We got our claim paid and wound up clearing $1600 on the deal.
I've heard very good things about Pods and would consider that if there is a next time.

I would recommend that you call PODS and get information right from them. They are really excellent, they will go over everything with you and recommend size of POD. They also have a list of packers and packers available with several names. PODS will quote you a price on the phone.

Like @Retiredguy123 said ...... sell most everything you have, take the remaining stuff with you in a small U-Haul (in our case in the back of our SUV) and start fresh. That's what we did (we downsized from 1800SF to 1150SF) and had we brought all the crap we saved over ~40 years we'd have to sell it here anyway as there is no place to store it unless you want to pay for storage. :D. If you're selling your home you'll probably be way ahead in equity$$$ so a couple thousand isn't going to change you life for the worse. Besides, PODS ain't cheap. They get you for everything. Make it as easy on yourself as you can.

uhall truck rentals might be able to help. I think they can handle getting people to pack and unpack the pod. Do not know if they rent pods. This idea is a few years old so maybe someone can add some current info or local info

My advice would be to check out PODS (know nothing about PR). Our good friends just sold their 3 BR house here after 10+ years to move back to Michigan. Lowest bid was $8K from traditional mover. They went with PODS, had no experience with that type of service at all so they were uneasy. They were beyond satisfied with the entire process, they were thrilled. They said they always experience "stress" on the actual day of the move in the past, and when contemplating the advantages of a service like PODS, had not thought of the less obvious advantages like packing at a leisurely pace. We went over a couple times to see if we could help, but they really did not need much even with a 3BR household. They then sold one car, arranged for the other to be transported, and flew home. Talked to them many times since they moved in February, didn't ask for details, but said WITH their flight home included, they still saved about 50% had they gone with one of their other quotes ! Others will give you this same unasked for advice, but I think it is because so many of us make the same mistake... we bring so many things we find we do not want, need, or use in our new location. The resale/used shops in this area of Florida are all overflowing with high quality furniture at low prices, people just move here and decide they want lighter, brighter, easier to rearrange furniture (and granted, new furniture is much lower quality than what most of us once knew as "good furniture", mostly from the Carolina's !). But do consider if you would be UN-happy if you are not surrounded by your things that make you comfortable. Selling everything is for some people, many don't even bring so much as a sheet or towel, others would suffer regret, so examine yourself, then make your decisions based on you, not on social media posts. It's such a great area, so much to do outside The Villages, easy to get to beaches on either side, south Florida and the pan handle, Tampa area, just so many places to explore once you get settled no matter which method of moving you choose. Good luck !

Be careful on getting rid of everything as some tell you. First supply chain is still sketchy for furniture, last thing you want to do is have to buy stuff because it’s available and not like it. Some furniture is Available, but 80% of what we needed was back ordered 4-6 months. Plus if I am spending $5000 on one room of furniture I need to love it.
A couch, loveseat and chair, (leather) will be $11,000. So if there is room bring everything, then get rid of when you find something else. People are always looking for furniture to put in rentals.
We brought two bedroom set, all of our side tables, dining set. Then we filled the pod with stuff we may or not need, but you need to fill completely to keep from shifting. Since your weight isn’t an issue, we brought more than we originally thought.
Total move midsize pod was $2,485 from Mid MI, in 6/2022. We loaded, and unloaded ourselves, but pods had list of people to use.
Best part of dining set that we were not going to bring, we sold here for $1100. So for us move became really cheap.

This or have estate sale. Your heirs will appreciate it.
Very little storage space here.
Low cost way to refurnish is second hand furniture stores. They generally carry the cream of the crop.

1st......I don't think $7k is too bad of a price.
2nd......If you go with a mover.............make sure they are not brokering the load. Make sure they are taking it door to door. Brokered loads can be a disaster.
Good Luck.

A couch, loveseat and chair, (leather) will be $11,000. . LOL. That would depend on a LOT of factors. One could do a lot better than that if they needed to or wanted to. A Mercedes can cost well over $100,000 but one can buy a Kia or even a Toytota for 1/3rd that. I guess it depends on what one is used to.

Sell the majority of your stuff and bring only the garbage you can't live without in a small POD. Forget about PACK RAT. I used PODS 20 plus time locally in JERSEY and it was a pleasure. One time I used PACK MY Rat to move to The Villages and it was a NIGHTMARE.
Buy whatever you can replace new once you get here. Between everyone on this forum, we all can direct you to a variety of places to start over fresh and new in quality or cheapo, your choice.
Welcome, your gonna love it here. I think we are coming up on 8 years and I still can't believe we're here, its the greatest.

We bought an entire new set of living room furniture (sofa and 2 chairs, leather with power recliners) end tables, 4 bedside tables and large table for the living room tv for less than $6,000 at Rooms for More when we moved here on 2020. Moving our old stuff from Pennsylvania would have cost as much. We moved only what we absolutely wanted and needed, bought the rest and are way ahead with less heavy moving necessary.

So many villagers have lamented that it was foolish to move the entire home goods to the Villages. We are among those, for the most part the homes here are smaller have less storage space. Really decide what items you really want to keep and pay tp move here.

We sold everything in Ohio and rented two vans. I drove one, hubby the other. They were filled to the max! Throw in Chihuahua for good luck! Ended up giving my brand new bulky area rugs taking up room in the van to my real estate agent. Glad we just brought the basics because my Ohio decor wouldn’t fit in FLA. Safe travels.

We used ABT. They rent out part of a trailer (we only used about 10-15 feet). That was in 2015. They dropped the trailer off at our house and we hired The Village Movers to unload it. I forget the cost, but it would much more now anyway.

We moved in July 2022 from Springfield Missouri to TV and it cost us less than $2600. Our house was 3400 square feet and we moved everything in one big van load with:laugh: North American Van Lines. We had to wait a couple of weeks for the local moving company to have a van headed down this way. However, the movers were extremely well organized, very professional and they didn't break anything. We could not have been more satisfied. Hope this is helpful.

GREAT ADVICE! If you have old or worn out furniture, get rid of it and buy new. We had nice, expensive furnishings up north so we brought it. I love my brown leather in my Florida house. And my dark wood. Everything does not have to be white!

Consignment shops are here are full of up north furniture. Florida decor is very different, and your heavy pieces won't look good in these homes. Call the kids, tell them to come get what they want, have a yard sale sell the rest. Bring just what is special to you.

We used Movers in Hartford, CT | Capitol Relocation & Logistics (https://www.capitolmoving.com/) and we were very happy with their services. Our representative was Mark Cavallari. They quote you a price and it is guaranteed. So, you know what the final cost will be. Moving guys were great and everything got here in one piece.

We used one large POD, and one small POD, 18 months ago, to move from Oregon. It was $7500. I would say from MA it should run you about $3500 to $4500. Call them and get an accurate quote. However, we did use their online system to get a quote and I don’t remember getting bombarded with anything. Btw, we sold all our furniture with out house and bought all new when we got here. That was the best thing we ever did! We just moved personal items which filled their largest POD.

My in-laws packed everything that could fit in a box and we shipped it FedEx. 60 boxes from their townhouse were shipped. Most everything else was sold. Everything from the basement sold or given away (no basements here). Anything precious went in our car or their car. Then we drove to the Autotrain in Virginia and woke up the next day in Orlando. So much better than dealing with moving companies. Every single one of them has nightmare reviews. Every single one.

Do yourself a favor and price out UBox from Uhaul. I just brought down the last of my house up north when I sold it, and it was much less than pods. I'm not sure if it would fit your needs, but many options for help available, the company and process seamless. I had a great experience with them.

Pods is not as cheap as you might think as they are only 8x16’. My 2000 sf house would have taken 3 pods. Add up the rental time and the pickup and delivery fees and it starts to pile up. In the end I did it all my self with a Penske truck with a trailer for my vehicle. All in with all the insurance that covers a total loss was just under 3k. Had it for a week, 2 days to pack it up max 3 for travel (actually took 2.5) and 2 to unpack. Everything was on my schedule not someone else’s.

We got two quotes last October for our move from SoCal. We had a 4 br house, but after a big purge we decided one 16’ POD would be enough. The quote was $10K. After recovering from the initial shock we called PackRat. $5K. Needless to say we chose them, and it was a great experience all around including them storing our container at their Orlando facility for two months until we closed escrow on 12/15. Best of luck!

I'm lucky because I have very little appreciation for furniture. I would never wait months for a sofa or chair to arrive from anywhere. Some people will wait 4 months for something because the store doesn't have the exact color they want. I can sit or sleep on just about anything. Paying a moving company $7,000 to move my stuff thousands of miles sounds totally absurd to me.

Listen to people that are telling you it's cheaper to sell or give away your old furniture and buy new here. Lots of excellent thrift and furniture consignment stores here and even better estate sales where you can buy an entire room of furniture for pennies on the dollar. Your old furniture will look old in your new home. We brought only our personal things and used usps to mail them which was surprising cheap and fully insured. Best move we ever made.

Yes. I have a friend who buys and sells furniture almost every month. She shops at the thrift stores and other places. When you go to their house, you never know what to expect because they always have different furniture. It must be a hobby or a business or both.

Interstate moving costs are all about the same from every mover. Their rates are regulated by the government so everybody tends to be about the same. In 2020 I rented a small 7 foot POD to move a few things from a house in NC and that cost about 1600. The bigger the POD and the longer the distance, the more it will cost.

I recently got a POD’s quote from WA to TV. 8 ft container was just shy of $8,000 and a 16 footer was right at $11,000. 15 ft rental truck through Penske is $2200 so looks like we are going to take a nice leisurely trip across the states.

Call ABF, we used them in 2010 and I see their trucks on the highway a lot here in FL. You rent space on a trailer that is coming to FL with other stuff on it and lock your section. You rent by the foot. You have 3 days to load it, they will hold it until you are here and ready to unload it ( you have 3 days to unload it). We're from Mass also and it was thousands cheaper than anyone else we called. We got relatives, nieces and nephew and their friends and neighbors to help load and when we got here we called the Charter School here and hired a couple of football players to unload it.

Moved from Westborough to TV 8/2020. No appliances no beds very little furniture. Quoted $20k. PODS brand name had been used by family and worked fine. At that time U haul had a similar option and we used that. The further ahead you booked the lower the price.

We had a rather big house and a huge garage in MN. We sold just about every stick of furniture we had. My buddy who I will call Thor had a 22ft enclosed trailer. Helped us load everything in MN(took up every bit of room floor to ceiling). Most of the stuff was my tools and hoists.jacks, with the exception of our big screen TVs and bedroom furniture. He then stayed at Tyndall AFB and waited for us to arrive(wife driving new Honda and me driving Denalli with my Honda on the trailer). Called him after our closing and he came over and helped us unload everything, total cost was $5000,that included his meals and Hotel stays. The next day he helped me go pick up my new Corvette toy in Largo FL!

So with the 1200 square feet and the $7,000 in mind, can anyone give me an idea of how much I will save using PODS or Pack Rat? Also- what would it cost to hire people to load and unload the container.
Thanks!
I have done alot of research also 7,000 is NOT a bad price as I have received quotes more than that. With pods etc for me it is hard to say which size I need and you have to hire loaders and unloaders and expect it to take about 2 hours or more........I am figuring 500 at least on both ends if you do pods.........my pod prices ranged from 3700 (uhaul) flimsy cubes to 5100 (shipts says from AARP) but not a bargain I think with shipt.........do it all movers ranged form 8,000 and up but it was only my stuff.........the big movers wont even give aprice unless they come and do a wlak thru or a video.........hope that helps

Yes. I have a friend who buys and sells furniture almost every month. She shops at the thrift stores and other places. When you go to their house, you never know what to expect because they always have different furniture. It must be a hobby or a business or both.
To you both it doesnt matter if you give it away etc. They all have a base weight depending on who you use so it maybe worth it to take it. I for one dont want to spend my time shopping all over to get settled and not have any fun! also some items are still taking weeks to arrive also inconvenient also I have gotten quotes from things i liked at Almost perfect furniture WAAAyyy costly......you may save on the move but in the end you pay more for the furniture...........

Moved from S. Florida 3 years ago and PODs was more expensive than most of the mover estimates. As another poster said, consider buying new especially if you are downsizing.

We have $7,000 worth of furniture. If we replace it with $7,000 of Florida bought furniture- that is the cost of the price quote for our move. On top of that we will still have the cost to get all of our boxes moved down here. The only alternative I see is a cheaper moving service

Are you considering the extra money you will get by selling your furniture before you move?
For me, the feeling of freedom was well worth getting rid of everything I owned and starting over. It wasn't about the money. It's amazing how much stuff you may not need anymore.

Pods are the way to go if you are capable of loading yourself. Pack everything very tightly and use blankets and bubble wrap. PODs has takedown spots at midway points. Stood matress up to cushion and secured seperating space in half before adding remainder. Unless you absolutely love what you have bring as little as possible. They are spot on with their pickup and delivery. Nothing broken except a small dent on my toaster oven. My lock, my keys. Moved from RI in 2017. About $3000 if I recall.

We used one of the Villages moving companies and it was just under $7000 from SE Pennsylvania, near Amish country in Lancaster. We packed ourselves. We’re so glad we did! Our buyers wanted our dining set with 10 chairs so I had to buy that here. Took 6 months to get it and it’s not the quality we had and was overpriced, but I do love it. We brought down everything else. Our bedroom suite was $5000 alone and I can’t imagine trying to replace it here with the same solid wood and craftsmanship we have. What we had works perfectly here but if your furniture is heavy, large, dark and dated, then I would consider just buying new. But - If you love it, bring it. You won’t replace a house full of furniture here for that moving cost. Best of luck!

Sell EVERYTHING...furniture from your last home will not sparkle like buying new. I think for $7000 you can furnish one of our homes if you just know where to buy and it's all new an fresh. We brought nothing here and love the updated look of our place.

Do yourself a favor and leave it all behind. We brought nothing and outfitted our whole home from silverware to beautiful furniture at the dozens of estate sales and consignment shops here in a few weeks time. Best thing ever.

Cost me $7000 - 7 years ago and the only furniture I brought down was a dining room table and a few end tables. The rest were boxes . Suggest you only bring what you actually use on a daily or weekly basis and buy new furniture when you get down here. Check out the thrift stores like Bargains and Treasures or Furniture Barn who sell practically new furniture. snowbirds rent their homes out and then sell the furnishings after they move her. Some even still have the tags on them . Then go to places like big lots who actually have some pretty good stuff . I bought a table and chairs for one room and everyone comments on how nice it is. I paid only $500 for the whole set - table and 6 chairs. If you want all new, then go to Altamonte Springs. There is an entire road that has every furniture store on it in one spot. It’s about an hour away and has a mall , Christmas tree shop ( got a great hand painted dresser from here) , and every other store you can possibly think of there

This is about what I paid in 2021 for a half truck from NYC suburb to The Villages. Highway robbery I know.

Save your money, don't spend so much on moving. We sold/donated all our old furniture. What we did keep, fit in a small pod. We got a storage unit up north and put the things we wanted to keep in it, as we emptied the house. A former co-worker needed furniture, and she bought most of my living room furniture, sold or gave to friends, and Habitat for Humanity truck picked up rest. We decided we would by "florida summer like" furniture down here and online. Before we moved down here, we got a storage unit down here in Florida, and furniture I bought online, we would ship to the storage unit. Before we were to drive down, we arranged for a mover to move and assemble everything in the storage unit in the house. We arranged for a POD to be delivered to our storage unit, loaded it ourselves, moving items in the north storage unit into POD, then we were there for the POD truck pick up. Everything worked great. Once down here, we shopped for what else we needed. We have a bright Florida summer feel (mostly white furniture, which we never would have done up north) to our new home and love it. Good luck.

Not sure if this will help as the info is old. We moved from RI to Florida in 2009 with the same housing description as yours.
We used Mayflower Moving and they used Hills Van Service of Marion County for the actual move as they are a Mayflower provider. (352-622-7101. We booked our move through Jenn Carpenter (agent code MO531) who is / was the national accounts coordinator. Not sure if she's still there.
Our estimate was around $6,800. Jenn was great to work with and the move went off on time and without a hitch. Mayflower carefully loads and then unloads the furniture. Surprisingly a few weeks after the move, we received a check from Mayflower for about $1,500 which was due an overage on their weight estimate. I never would have known if they hadn't sent the check.
I realize it's 14 years later and costs have gone up. But their refund check told me they were a good and honorable company to deal with. Hope your move goes smoothly.

$7,000 to move a 3 Bedroom Home? Sounds reasonable if they are packing everything, moving it to The Villages and Delivering it. We had a "VIP Move" (due to valuable artwork, etc.), and it was $18,000 for our household goods.

You get the benefit of experience in previous posts. We moved from Marblehead to The Villages 16 years ago from a 4 br 3500 sq ft plus an attic and full basement. Moved into a 2000 ft home with essentially no storage areas. We ended up with a single 16 ft POD and it was still too much. You seriously need to be real selective as to what you bring.
Clothes- We wear Bermudas all year round. Maybe 1 coat and several Jackets. Maybe 1 suit , several pairs of long slacks. No boots, few formal shoes, no gloves, scarfs, few sweaters/sweat shorts.
Carpets won't fit , match or be required. Pictures , wall hangings won't match. Perhaps time to dump some old mattresses/box springs. Huge clunky furniture should be discouraged.
Kitchen storage is limited. Several sets of dishes, glasses, cups, pots, pans, appliances etc should be limited to i set.
No huge garage collection of tools, be selective. I've gone 16years with no wheelbarrow , lawn mower, band saw etc. No big extension ladders needed.
We made several car trips before our final move. Brought card table , chairs, set of kitchen ware etc. Sleeping bags worked first few days and then bought new mattress and box springs (No Bed). Found some bargains while on these trips. Helped us decide what not to bring.
If you have old sofa's and furniture, make the hard decision to dump now.
Make the decision now. Sell what you can. Start with a new slate

One scam that may happen is 3 days before the pickup in MA, they said they looked at a satellite map and our street is too small so they will have to unload the big tractor trailer truck and reload it onto a smaller truck. We told them that is not what the contract said and we insisted the key the original price. We live on a cul-de-sac and it was amazing to see that big tractor trailer back all the way back to the main road when he left. Some of a neighbors in TV said they fell for the same scam and pay the extra money to unload to a smaller truck.
They also stated our load was xxx cubic feet but my wife took pictures of the volume markers inside the trailer, send them the picture. They gave us a refund after the delivery for the volume incated by our picture.
