Looking for beginner golf clubs

Hi, my wife and i have never played golf before and are looking for beginner clubs. We promise not to slow anyone up when we finally get out there after some lessons! Weve already been advised by a good friend that a good golfer knows when to pick up and move along! Thanks in advance

Not sure if you are looks for the "clubs" used to hit the balls, or a "club" of people just learning the sport. If you are looking for a set of clubs, they come up quite often on this site. IMHO, go to a store and get measured for a set of clubs, and then check any set you are looking at to see if they are at least close. If you at looking for a group of people to play with, I would take a couple of lessons, then ask around your neighborhood to see if there is a group, and if not call a couple of local course starter shacks and see if there are any openings. I have done this a few times, ended up with players better than me and players worse than me. I pick up the ball as soon as it is obvious, I will not make double par.

If you are buying used clubs, make sure you know how old they are. Newer clubs are much better. You can buy a complete new set of Nitro clubs, including the bag, on Amazon for about $200 - 250, and they are pretty good clubs. Don't pay extra for a name brand.

Or go to goodwill buy a cheap used set to play with and if you like it buy a more expensive one.

Buy used clubs and take the money you save on lessons.

I used to think it was my clubs but I took a lesson years ago and the golf teacher had no problem hitting my clubs long and straight. The swing is more important than the clubs!

Totally agree with the lessons recommendation. There is so much to learn to play a respectable game.
This past winter while in the villages the wife and I (who never played golf before) picked up some yard sale clubs (approx $35 a set!) and each got about ten lessons. Lessons start you right off with proper techniques and no bad habits are formed that will need to be corrected later.
By the end of the winter, we were ready for better clubs but be prepared for sticker shock. We paid $800 for a set of Bloom (made by cleveland I think) for the wife. The do make a big difference if you have proper form. Nothing can help you if you don't know proper motion.

We had a wonderful experience at Wedgewood Golf directly behind Walmart on 466. Great staff. We would share a one hour lesson but be prepared that you will need more than a couple lessons if you're new to the game. I think we each had ten lessons over a couple months.
They also have weekly clinics on specific topics, driving, putting, chipping etc that are cheaper than individual lessons.

So now when we play with friends who "don't need lessons", we quietly watch while they swing that club like they're playing baseball!! Have a nice day.

It's really important that you get clubs that are the correct length, and shaft flex for your size/strength. It can be very difficult for a beginner to get the ball up into the air if the shaft of the club is too stiff.

I don’t think it is necessary to buy new clubs. Almost every month, you can find name brand used clubs for under $250 on this site.

And remember, after your first round with new clubs, they are used.

You mentioned the lessons. Thats the most important item to take care of if you want to have fun with this otherwise frustrating game. If you can avoid hitting balls until you get some lessons it will rduce the frustration and enhance your enjoyment. No I am not a golf trainer, but know its the best way to start.

At the bare minimum learn some basic golf etiquette, nobody cares if you suck at golf but they will care if you practice bad etiquette.

Everyone is so quick to take lessons but never learns any etiquette.

It's like driving a car and not knowing what side of the road we drive on.

You can always tell who is new to golf not by their swing but by their etiquette.

Amazing they make you take classes for pickleball but not golf.

Here is 3 simple ones.

1. If you think there is a possibility your ball may hit someone yell “FORE” You’re responsible for where your ball goes.

2. Shut Up! when someone is hitting or putting. Yes it's a social game but be mindful of your surroundings and playing partners, you’re not the only one out there.

3. Fix your ball marks on the green, if you can’t find it don't worry but at least try.

There are many others but those 3 are a good start.

OP, if you are shopping for used clubs, note that the newer sets only have a few irons, 7, 8, 9, and wedge, plus 3 or 4 hybrid clubs. If the used set has a 3, 4, 5, and 6 iron, I would question how old the clubs are. I think this has become a trend because most average golfers can hit better shots with the hybrids.

Rather than buy some old mis matched clubs, you might be better off to go to WalMart or a sporting goods store. You can get a whole set with a bag for less than $200. You can use them for quite a while, when you feel the need and build your skills you can invest in a nice set of clubs. Otherwise, you should subscribe to estatesales.net and watch the sales. There are clubs on there any day of the week. You really should get them fitted for your use.

Nothing at all wrong with used clubs. Just be sure that the grips are in good shape. You cannot play with slippery grips. This is very important, you cannot learn to play with slippery grips. All you end up doing is an instilling bad swing to compensate for slippery grips.

Agree and most of us(over 55) should look at senior clubs/graphite and regular shafted(not stiff)

Good thoughts, but how many new, probably elder players hit a ball so high that they create a ball mark?

Very educational thread for a new golfer.

I was a horrible golfer before buying a set of hybrids.

Now I'm just a terrible golfer who gets more loft :-)
