I put a used set of golf clubs on sale in the classified. Bio Cell Cobra Driver with head covers and adjustment tool, Tight lies 3 wood, ping eye 2 irons 3-pw, a hogan sand iron, and an odyssey 2 ball putter.........
I got an email response asking for pictures and some more detail, said the set would be for his father in-law
The buyer asked for my name, phone, number, and address
AND said he can only pay by cashiers check, I said cash only, he said, cashiers check only
at that point I figured it was a scam as his wordings were not great English
did not expect this on the classifieds
his name is. Yi Xu in case you get an inquiry, in Chinese that means GOTYOU
BEWARE!!!!!

Mine wanted to use Zelle. I like it and use it but the email they sent was from a Gmail account and I don't do anything unless I see it in my Zelle account.... I had two people try to do that... Good catch!

I use Zelle to send money from a Truist checking account that I own. But, I don't think I actually have a Zelle account. Apparently, it is a free service provided by Truist Bank. It seems pretty safe, and it sure beats mailing a paper check.

I had a very similar email from zenturay231. I forwarded the info to the TOV admin to alert them but haven't heard anything back. Someone is using TOV for scamming the classifieds.

This is nothing new, unfortunately. Scammers scour all types of classified ad sites hunting for victims. Sadly, if it wasn't successful, they wouldn't do it. Good on the OP for not becoming one.

Also had email inquiry on TOTV ad from Xi Wu wanting to know if cashiers check acceptable. Replied no and never heard from him again. All correspondence only thru TOTV and no personal info shared. Sad that scammers have invaded this site, too.

The market place has always been a dangerous place to conduct business in.

Zelle is a transfer service used by most major banks, credit unions, etc.
Very convenient and fast. I’ve used for many years. I even pay my landscaping company these days with Zelle.

When you are selling something and you hear Cashier's or Certified check payment, RUN. These are all scammers

Same problem on Facebook Marketplace. Lots of folks want Venmo, and the other similar apps. They have found a way to clean out your account once you give them your account info. BEWARE!

If you know who you are sending to or receiving from all of these are convenient and reasonably safe. Stranger who want to send you money, generally run the other way!

Doubtful, since all you give them is an e-mail...
The scam involves them sending you a scam email from "venmo", asking you to sign in, since they have a "business account"...
If you fall for that, you're screwed...

It is a scam. Period. Don’t use Zelle with strangers.Zelle "with strangers" is 100% safe as long as you see the "strangers" funds in your account before handing anything over and provide nothing other than a phone number or email. No different than PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, AppleCash and others. 20+ years of buying and selling using all those types of payment methods without issue on dozens of websites. One just has to be aware of what's going on. Read about the actiual scams that are out there and you'll see most are due to the money recipient's lack of understand and/or over anxiousness to sell something.
I have always kept a separate checking account, a throwaway Google Voice phone number and a throwaway Gmail address for those types of purchases and only keep needed funds in them anyway. When I SELL something I rarely even use my real name because here in FL your name opens up your entire life.

Actually anywhere your name opens up your entire life. My sister was concerned about some search engine called SPOKEO. I try never to give valid information on surveys.
SPOKEO showed me as over 150 years old and with more money than Buffet. More recently my Aunt must have looked as it says I know her. Information she must have added, it seems she does not know when I was born. My sister, they listed the names of her kids, address, what her husband does for a living and if, I recall even the name of her dog.

The only thing that you're selling that is worth any real cash is that Odyssey 2 ball putter.
The rest of those clubs are 20 years past their prime.
That is all.

Sadly, SPOKEO has me and my entire family spot on as do many others. That is the main reason anyone who uses their real names online (FB, Nextdoor and others) is opening themselves up for a privacy problem. FL is the worst state. Any scammer or thief can just pick virtually any name there and plug it into one of those PUBLIC DATA DATABASES (like SPOKEO and dozens of others) and go after them. Nextdoor + The Villages is like Christmas day for scammers. Easy to find the most vulnerable and naive folks who post there simply by reading some of the posted messages there. That place is frightening. No only real names (most cases) but locations.
