I am buying a home in TV next month.
I have questions about my current license and registration.
I am moving from Lee County. I would think I need to change my drivers license addresses but can’t find anything on the Sumter County website about how to do it. I would rather schedule an appointment but not even sure what box to tick off for an appointment. I am going to try to change these when I am there for two weeks in July.

congrats on your new home! Did you buy a new home or a pre-owned home? If you purchased a pre-owned home in Sumter than you can go to the 'big gold dome' building on 466A to have your license switched. It's super easy, as much as the website provides appointment times you don't really need one. There is never a line up, you can simply walk in and you will be in and out in 15 to 30 min. Now, if you bought a new home in the Village of Newell then you are in Lake County and you will have to go to a completely different office. Hope this helps.

This is what I found online.

Driver’s License/ID Cards Name and Address Change

Name changes must first be made with the Federal Social Security Administration in order to have your name updated on a Florida driver’s license or ID card. All name changes must be completed in person at a local office; however address changes can be completed online via MyDMV Portal or also in person at a local office.

Sounds like you are bringing a car to Florida, you will need to go in person with the car to the DMV as they will need to verify the odometer reading in person, and bring your check book, as I recall there was a ~$500 fee for bringing a car into the state of Florida, the antique car was less.

I don't think it matters that if you are in Lake County. The drivers license is issued by the state, not the county. You can go to the copper dome building on Powell Road.

I just went yesterday to change my out of state DL to a FL DL. It took about 10 minutes and super easy to do. I am in Sumter county though. Not sure about the others. If you’re in Sumter co. Go to the website Sumter county .com. All one word. Then you can schedule an appointment for DL or tags etc.

OP said they are coming from Lee County, so already a Florida resident. No vehicle transfer fee required.

Thanks for all the replies.
I think I would also need to change my registration address. Can I just walk in for that? I will be in Sumter County

Yes, you can just walk in at the gold-dome Sumter county building near Powell Road and CR 466a. I did it last year in May having a driver’s license from another Florida county. I can’t remember if I needed proof of new address. It took 10-15 minutes with no line for me. I went in the morning.

The building has other county government agencies, too, making it sort of a one-stop shopping for new residents such as voter registration, homestead exemption, and library card, all run efficiently.

There is also a Sumter county annex at corner of 466 and Morse Road. Less people traffic there… I had an appt but was not necessary.

We just moved from Charlotte County and we just had to take the required documentation to the big gold dome building on Burnsed. You do not need an appointment any longer. It was a very easy process. You can find the required documentation on their website.

Tuesday through Thursday , around the middle of the month, later in the day.
That's the best time to go. We'd read that, and had to go twice (once for each of us) and there was no line -- step right up. First of the month, and early in the day it can be crowded.

We found the information in the front pages of The Villages phonebook, a valuable resource. Go to ant tax collectors office. We used the one near Lake sumter landing. Bring money. Registrations for 1 car and 3 motorcycles cost $1,000 in 2018.

If you are already a Florida resident (I assume you are from Lee County Florida), you can do the driver's license address change online. I think it also allows you to register to vote in Sumter County.

Do not to forget to file your Save our Homes exemption if you are selling a house in Lee County you can transfer your Homestead exemption from there to here. It could save you significant money. Welcome.

Why is there’s fee for bringing a car into the state? Shouldn’t it just be regular car registration? And if so, $500 is way too high, higher than California, unless it’s a new, super expensive luxury car.

Did you have to change plates?

Did you have to change plates?

No. In-state is essentially just the paperwork reflecting a change of address. It’s a smooth process for Florida in-state moves.
