I've been with USAA for 60 years and they do have good coverage and I do get discounts. However the last renewal went up almost 20 percent. Is it time to shop, or is this universal? $2800 a year sounds like too much.

Wouldn’t you think. I’ve tried to get car coverage several times with USAA over the years each time they were way out of the ballpark, comparing same coverages. It only costs your time to get quotes from other insurers.

USAA here as well, just got our latest up 46% over 6 months. Decided to remove uninsured motorist coverage which was the biggest line item on our bill. Given that we're not going to be worried about lost wages or medical bills from an accident with an uninsured motorist, it seemed like a reasonable gamble.

I think you should be shopping around especially if you haven’t had any accidents or if they are holding your age against you, I’m paying around $1,450 for year on 2 year old car and I’m 84 ,that includes rental if car is in for accident.FYI I didn’t even bother shopping around , I’ve heard others say less but of course we don’t know what the real story is when we hear , someone told me , or I Heard .

I agree. I have not had uninsured motorist insurance since moving to Florida. In some states, it is mandatory, but not in Florida. If you have good health insurance and you don't plan to sue your insurance company for lost wages or pain and suffering, I don't see any reason to have the insurance.
Even if you buy the insurance, a $100K policy will be worthless when you consider the medical bills and the lawyer fees. You better plan on buying more than a million dollars in coverage to get anything worthwhile.

There are a LOT of uninsured motorists here in Florida, that's why its so expensive....even if you take the risk for health insurance, what's your car worth ? It won't be covered...

will raise your car insurance rate at that age.

Some Insurance company's look at 85-year-olds as unsafe driving age and
will raise your car insurance rate at that age.maybe ,maybe not but the master plan since I came to Florida a long time ago was to be home in Boston for good at around 85 or 86/and I may not even want a car anymore when I move back and if I don’t keep a car I can rent the parking space if I wanted to for obscene money lol

Yeah that is a very risky move. FL has a very high % of uninsured motorists and worse yet, hit n runs. I would for sure invest in a dash cam. I LOVE mine. I was a passenger in a truck totalled by a guy who was driving a car he did not own. He tried to say we hit him vs his turning into us. If not for the dash cam it would have been a dispute for the courts.
The guy confessed to the police when we told him prior to the police arriving that we had a dash cam. $150 dash cam kept the guy honest.

I agree with the dash cam, but I don't understand how your accident has anything to do with uninsured motorist insurance. The truck damage would be covered by collision insurance. And, if the uninsured motorist sued the truck driver, the truck driver's liability insurance would cover any liability. I have both collision insurance and $1 million in liability coverage, but zero uninsured motorist insurance. In the accident that you described, having uninsured motorist insurance would not have covered anything.

The reason why USAA went up so much is because of last years hurricane. USAA doesn't insure homes on the coast, but they did take a "HUGE" hit on all the vehicles destroyed, flooded, etc from Hurricane Ian.

I have been with them for 40 years and my car/golf carts premium doubled! I looked around and went with AAA, which was HALF of previous premium for exactly the same coverage. I stayed with USAA for home insurance as that premium only increased $230 and was competitive with other insurance companies.

Been with usaa 45 years. This year i got $350 back from the "subscribers savings account" and $750 back from senior discount...over$1000 total, on top of decent rates ($1100 on 2 year old subaru and $1200 on home)

Well those thoughts were in my head as well after the last renewal but…….we get back a dividend check every year which I apply toward the price increase and then I consider the thousands of dollars that is “banked” in my account. I understand that once we leave USAA that is released to us as cash. Figured that, given our age and the couple of bucks I might save if I jumped ship (for the first year before that insurance company bumped it up), I might as well stand the course.

I could be wrong but I believe that the uninsured coverage also gives you liability protection if you are injured. I would get a clear explanation of coverage before I eliminated the coverage.
If you change to a different carrier you might get a better introductory rate but it will go up quickly. It is generally better to stay with one carrier for the long term unless you are saving a bunch of money.

The uninsured motorist insurance may pay for some of your medical bills. But, since I have excellent medical insurance, I consider it to be redundant. I would mostly be paying for insurance that I already have.

I have USAA and wouldn't change for "cheaper". I've had to file 2 claims, 1 home and 1 car, in the last 2 years, and both were handled quickly, easily, and worked out as much in my favor as I could have hoped. The customer service is hard to beat. Yes, my golf cart insurance went from $120/yr to $180/yr...but if they knew we were riding in the lane next to cars going 35, it would be $1500!

We were with State Farm for 46 years, no accidents, no tickets, single 5 year old car, last year they raised our annual renewal 25% . I questioned it and basically too bad, so sad, nothing we can do.
Switched to Progressive at a 13% increase was the best I could do.

As I understand it, the next question would be "do you have uninsured motorist insurance?" If you say yes, then they need to use it. But, if you say no, they will bill your regular insurance or Medicare. It has no effect on your insurance coverage or treatment. I think you are better off by not having uninsured motorist insurance because, if you do, you are required to use your auto insurance to pay for your medical bills. I don't want to depend on my auto insurance to pay my medical bills. I don't think Medicare is allowed to pay medical bills if you are already covered by uninsured motorist insurance in an accident. That is why they ask the question.

Most people who here who have USAA insurance have been with them for years have thousands of dollars in their subscriber savings account. If you cancel your insurance with them, then after 6 months they will send you the balance.
Once you receive the check you can always sign up again. I got one for over 6k. If you had auto and car it will be much larger.

I am also a USAA member, 44 years. I want to offer up a possibility of why their rates have increased do much. About a month ago I visited the USAA web site and learned they recently hired a DEI director, a VP position. I look a little more on their web site and see all the organizations they support. I have no idea what they are paying the VP of DEI, or what does it require to maintain a DEI division within USAA. In my opinion USAA see’s the need to go down the DEI road? Simple put, I want the most qualified person in each position at USAA. It appears USAA is backing away for the best qualified person in each job. As a member owned business I feel their DEI position is going to cost members, and maybe the increase in rates is part of what’s going on. Please take a little time to search USAA and their DEI support to see I am not making this up. Again very simple, just hire the best qualified into each position.

Was also with USAA for over 30 years. Moving here from Ohio /pa area, the rates went way up. Same coverage auto, 2 cars $1200 with progressive which was way less than USAA offered to transfer my coverage to Florida. Shopped with them to also do home insurance but they were too high-even before the hurricane. Sad to leave them but I also experienced less than optimal customer service for which I had come to expect..

Your understanding is completely wrong. In Florida you must buy 10K in PIP coverage. That covers medical bills. So a med provider needs to know if you have auto insurance and then they'll know you have primary medical coverage with Florida's personal injury coverage "PIP" It pays before Medicare and regular health insurance. The mandatory PIP minimum limits are 10K so the first 10K in medical bills is paid by PIP.
It's absurd to think a med provider will be able to make some decision if in fact another driver or person is uninsured, and at fault, at the time of treatment, so UM applies. In addition, UM is not a primary or secondary med coverage provider. The med provider has no recourse to bill UM coverage for payment of any bills.
UM coverage is a first party contractual coverage that benefits only the insured. No med provider has any right to claim it's coverage benefits as a third party since they aren't an insured under the policy. Their claim for reimbursement of bills paid would be against the uninsured motorist.

I admit that I am not an expert on how UM insurance works when someone is injured in an accident with respect to medical bills. But, I don't understand your second two paragraphs. I assume that someone with UM insurance that covers medical bills would have their UM insurance limit reduced by the amount of those payments. But, I don't have any UM insurance and I don't want it. I have excellent medical insurance and that is all that I need to cover my medical bills. Why would I want to depend on my auto insurance company to pay for medical bills when I am already covered for that? It is totally redundant with my medical insurance. The only other reasons for UM insurance would be for lost wages and pain and suffering. I don't have any wages to lose, and I am certainly not going to pay an annual premium to cover the unlikely need for a pain and suffering lawsuit, where the lawyer would skim off 40 percent or more of any settlement. Most people who have UM insurance have a limit of $100K per person which is not enough to fund a pain and suffering settlement after deducting any medical bills and lawyer fees. Most lawyers would not even take the case for that amount. In my opinion, if you are retired and have good medical insurance, you should seriously evaluate the need for UM insurance. The fact is that most people do not even know what their UM insurance covers.

I was in the insurance biz. Uninsured coverage pays for your injuries if you are injured by an un-insured or under-insured person(which is highly likely in Florida) and if that person causes the accident. Also it does pay for lost wages, deaths any other type of subjective injuries such as pain and suffering, scarring, etc,.

Be careful. For example, If you were injured in a bad accident and had serious injuries, uninsured motorist coverage would pay for your pain and suffering, lost enjoyment of life, etc if the responsible driver was un-insured or under-insured. For reasons like this we are bombarded by TV commercials.

And for these reasons, we can listen to commercials from Dan Newlin, Morgan and Morgan, every day. Most of us do not know what is going on between insurance companies and/or Medicare and in most cases a person needs an attorney if they are injured in an auto accident.
