View Full Version : What animal is prowling my home in the Village of Caroline?

This is disgusting, but some animal is leaving its droppings in my yard at night. It is full of berry pits and is about 8 inches by 5inches (my size 12 shoe is used for scale.) I think its too large for a cayote and find it hard to believe a black bear is in Caroline.

Reminds me of the old joke:
The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.
They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.
Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.
It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat.
Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.

Bobcats/related felines and alligators also have been known to wander at night. My neighbor saw a very large gator crossing or street the other night. I have found similar droppings, very black, in my side yards.

Good catch on the shoes! Against my better sartorial judgement I wore my outdoor grass-cutting shoes vs. my Allen Edmonds while standing next to a piece of unknown dung.

If you have wildlife in your yard, it might be fun to get an inexpensive trailcam and set it up to get infrared photos or videos overnight. They aren't too expensive and are easy to use. Amazon, sporting stores etc all have them. I have one and have captured a lot of good shots. (or, your neighbors wandering around, lol). They use a memory card and can be viewed on any device that accepts a card. They run on batteries, and you can place them in different locations.

And if you don’t have the google search app, you should download it. It’s very handy and you can search literally anything by taking a picture of it.

Probably a bear. Too bad they cannot pick up their own poop. We have a Bob Cat same issue since we know it's not a dog in our backyard and we have seen him.

I'm inclined to think it's fox or coyote droppings. Might even be bobcat. I've seen some large live coyote and bobcats in Lake county. Have also seen some smaller foxes.
Get a game (trail) camera and set it up to take pictures. I did that about a year or two ago and got pictures of several large raccoons, rabbits, armadillo, and possums in my back yard. Set some bait out and position your camera to film whatever is coming to the bait. Fish or sardines will bring them in from a long distance.
I paid less than $60 for my trail camera about 2 years ago. It's motion activated and easy to download the pictures to computer. Look on Amazon. They have lots to choose from. It also makes a good security camera if you want to know who is wandering around your property at night... or anytime for that matter.
