I recently added a wrap-around birdcage to my patio villa (screened in). I now want to add patio furniture (dining table with chairs /chaise lounge / chairs with cushions).
This is my first summer here, and now that it’s rainy season, want to know what others have done patio-furniture-wise on their outdoor patios or in their screened in birdcages that get wet when it rains.
I have some nice chairs and ottomans with cushions, that I have quickly found out absorb rain, and will eventually produce mildew, so I’ve had to move them to the covered area of my front lanai. Before purchasing more outdoor furniture, would like recommendations on what materials are best to leave out without having to cover each time it rains.
I would like to entertain and have permanent lounge and dining furniture in birdcage, but don’t want to have buyers regret if I purchase furniture that will not hold up to the Florida summer rains.
As usual, thanks for your replies and advice. 😀

We bought all of our outdoor furniture (dining table, 4 chairs, 6 recliner chairs with footstools, side tables, and two wicker chairs) at Perfect Porch. Actually, we use the two very comfortable wicker chairs inside our house. We bought these items in 2016 thru 2019.
We looked at Leisure Living, Coral Casual, and Palm Casual, but we liked the furniture at Perfect Porch much better. As I recall, the furniture was made by Windward Designs.
It looks like they are still in business. We have four of the high-back rockers and ottomans and four of the non-reclining dining chairs. We use them every morning when we sit outside and have our coffee.

For furniture that will be in the rain we like the sling chairs and loungers. The rain doesn’t pool and they dry off quickly. Our outdoor tables are cement, tile, or metal. We do have an outdoor firepit, but the cover stays on whenever we aren’t using it.

In South Florida, I had furniture with cushions that were supposed to be "mildew resistant". Never again will I do cushions if the furniture is exposed to the elements.
Here, we purchased all our outdoor furniture at Perfect Porch. The sling chairs and chaise loungers look brand new and they are a couple years old now. I highly recommend Perfect Porch for your outdoor furniture.

Palm Casual in Winter Park just off the turnpike. Family owned, they make it there, sunbrella cushions. Lifetime guarantee. My furniture is 3 years old, always left on Lanai. Hose them off if they get dirty, still as bright as the day I bought them. I also got a metal table and chairs there. I do have roll down shades that keep out some rain, but I don't fuss and move anything or pay them any attention. I am very happy.

Actually quite a few places and different customers like different retailers.
We liked Perfect Porch and Palm Casual.
Even Overstock.com has some.

Is any part of the bird cage under roof? We have a birdcage around the pool and attaches ate the house. At the covered lanai area. Purchased from Palm Casual. Excellent service and guarantee. There is a product called Polywood. Guaranteed for 20 years. Must buy on line. I believe Palm Casual have their own version.

We bought a very nice wicker sectional set from Home Depot and it's been great for years, however some of the wicker is starting to disintegrate and leaving sharp edges on the arm rests. Probably will not go with wicker again. Lesson learned.

Hi Michael - I have a lounge chair from Palm Casual that I am going to sell because I moved and my screened area is smaller than what i had before. If you are interested in looking at it, let me know.

We have the Wicker look outdoor furniture purchased in NJ 24 years ago! Not at Home Depot. A store that sold quality patio furniture. Now here in Florida, Palm Casual matched it well.

If you want comfortable cushions sunbrella or not, they will mildew if left to the elements. We have palm casual, wicker, with cushions. Ours are 12 years old and still look new, because I have covers for all of them. Takes less than 5 minutes to cover 2 rockers, sectional, 2 loveseats and chairs.
They do make polywood furniture that one can remove cushions and store in outdoor containers.
Until pool is finished everything is under lanai, and yes i covered anything that was at the screening

Bottom line, no cover from the rain, no cushions of any kind/brand.
A weaved material, like someone mention, for outdoor furniture can
get wet and dries fast.
Cushions are a pain to store but comfortable when dry.

We currently have patio furniture from Polywood (it's sold in many stores including Home Depot) and love it. Most of their outdoor furniture is comfortable enough without cushions.
We are in the process of relocating to TV from Minnesota. Our current Polywood furniture is black so we aren't planning on bringing it with us assuming it will be much too hot in the sun but we will be looking for the same brand in a different color when we get there in October.
Highly recommend Polywood.

we just did the exact same thing.....birdcage. We have the plastic wicker with cushions. We have covers for the cushions. My wife has made covers from a canvas material that she sprayed with scotch guard and it takes about 2 minutes to cover the sofa and 4 chairs around the firepit. Easier than full covers...

Probably not the most popular choice, but I love my PVC outdoor chairs, tables and side tables. Have had all outdoors for years and years. Comfortable recliners and club chairs. Rain? No problem.

You want cushions with Sunbrella fabric to resist rain and prevent the color from fading. When it’s going to be really windy I take the cushions in and sometimes the furniture depending on the storm.

Bought the lanai/birdcage furniture from Coral's Casual 12 years ago. Went with Suncoast Furniture sling sets and glass tables. Still look like new.

Got a table and swivel chairs from Palm Casual. Bought quality and the chairs are shaped comfortably. Did not want to deal with cushions or covers and all the effort and storage related to them. Wash them down periodically and wax. Best decision for me.

All weather wicker will hold up for many years, just not the quality Home Depot sells. I’ve had a set exposed to the sun in MA for 8 years now and it still looks brand new- has a lifetime warranty also.

Hi. We have a poly wood table and chairs in our birdcage. No fuss and no maintenance. Don’t get mildew etc. there are no cushions but the poly wood type products are the best IMO. I see them used at beaches with salt water and again they last forever and come in many colors. Never rust never paint never lose their color etc. they have all types of products from small tables big tables dining chairs hi top chairs bar chairs etc. big selection on line. Good luck

For the past years we've invested in Berlin Gardens. It's a recycled polywood product that does not come cheap but it will probably last longer than I will. The guarantee is excellent and I like Berlin Gardens because it has fewer screws that show in the finished product. When it needs to be cleaned we power wash it. The Adirondack chairs we chose can be folded up and put away. Our latest investment is a high top table with sling chairs. The set is very durable.

Try Sam”s Club or Costco. You can look then order online delivered. Some of the specialty stores are really expensive and not sure that is necessary. I agree with sling furniture, drys easily and is pretty comfortable

I also recommend Palm Casual for good wicker furniture; but we have all that (wicker and cushions) in the lanai where it can stay dry. For outside, we found that even the condensation and dew will keep chairs wet in the shade so we went with cast aluminum for tables and chair bodies, and sling type seats which dry very quickly. We have a bunch of C-spring style sling chairs for entertaining, and found that the type that has a thin padding in the sling kept enough moisture that you couldn't sit in them until they had enough sun to dry out. We have unpadded sling chairs that are extremely comfortable and are dry when we want to sit outside - which we do a lot. I got cast aluminum since the only thing that will rust is the connecting screws; powder coated steel will rust quicker than you think in FL outdoors! PM me if you want some of the brand names and where we got stuff.

I really like the idea of covers for the outdoor furniture, but assumed the hot Florida sun would melt them. What kind of covers do you have - I will get some.

We have a few pieces from Coral Casual and like it very much. When you order cushions, specify the outdoor, quick dry cushions. We have a few on the floor for pets and they occupy them shortly after rain storms. Water doesn't stay in them, but they are cushioning. A bit expensive, but sounds like what you want. I also order from Cushion.com Lets You Customize Replacement Seat Cushions and Outdoor Furniture Cushions (http://www.cushions.com)

Most ‘outdoor’ with fabric has sunbrella fabric. All the companies mentioned plus everything from Target to Lowe’s to Home Depot’s outdoor furniture will tell you on the tag if it is Sunbrella or another waterproof material. Also look into Amish Furniture in downtown Wildwood. Not cheap but great quality that can take the local weather!

Yes, the specialty stores like Coral Casual, Leisure Living, Perfect Porch, and Palm Casual are pretty expensive, but we love our lanai and we love sitting outside, so we wanted really good comfortable outdoor furniture.
About the wicker furniture, we were surprised how different they were. We liked some models but definitely did not like others.

We have two reclining chairs and two straight back and a rocker , 3 side tables with marble topping and all cushions…from Palm Casual. Its been 8 years and you would think I just bought them. They are on the covered lanai but its not enclosed. I have had to clean the cushions once…and will do it again in the fall…they hold up well, they are excellent to work with I wouldn’t go anywhere else. They have been around a L O N G time. Good luck.

We went to Palm Casual several times 5-7 years ago and their prices seemed higher than Perfect Porch, both on the wicker chairs and the casual outdoor furniture, so we didn't buy anything there.
To be honest, our problem may have been their salesperson who reminded us of a family member we do not like.

We ran around all week for a wicker dining set which will be in the lanai. We went to all the above places, but either didnt like the table the set came with or the chairs on other sets. We were walking by City furniture (I know all the horror stories) and saw a set that was perfect. It was also less than the other mentioned patio stores. We do want a decent set. Debating whether to deal with them or not!

For the furniture you have on the enclosed lanai how do you clean the cushions? Palm Casual says to use a solution of half water, half bleach but that doesn’t seem to be working well. What do you use?

I learned very quickly NOT to leave out cushions on furniture that is directly exposed to the elements on my birdcage when not in use - one rain, and it took a few days for cushions to dry out. Right now, I am storing cushions inside my garage when not in use- in process of shopping for an attractive piece of waterproof, outside storage for the cushions. (Actually, a piece arrived today I purchased from Amazon that I am returning, as the dimensions are not the same - too small- than what was advertised on their site).
Regarding cleaning cushions - I purchased a cleaner called “Fuller Brush Co. Upholstery Cleaner” - comes in an aerosol can, and seems to do the job on food stains - I purchased on Amazon.

We have this furniture. I highly recommend the sling furniture. It is so easy to clean and the rain water runs right through it. We would have loved to have furniture with cushions but they are a lot of work to keep clean. I'd rather have the sling furniture and not have to worry about it getting wet.
We have had this sling furniture from Perfect Porch for three years and it looks like we picked it up yesterday. I have done only one major washing with a weak solution of Dawn dish washing liquid. OP.....you won't be disappointed.

I would avoid the fake plastic rattan textured furniture. After about 5 years the plastic becomes brittle and you lose parts of the furniture as they break off.

I bought Amazon Basic covers for all our lanai furniture. I also bought a small deck box that is 3' x 3' x 3' that we keep in the corner of the lanai to keep the covers in when not in use. This has worked well so far. The furniture stays dry and and I don't have to move cushions in and out.

We purchased some outdoor furniture a few years ago. I would recommend something that does not rust. I even purchased some light weight outdoor furniture from I think Lowes that I believe was 100% aluminum but the welds were not and they will rust. Our outdoor recliner chairs have a hinge point, sure enough over time a little bit of rain water gets in there. That is not a problem until I move the chair and out comes a little bit of black rusty color water. Just something to keep in mind.

Even with a birdcage your patio furniture will still fade from the sun. It won't be as bad as full throttle sun damage but it will fade.

When I lived in Colorado, my patio furniture was on the deck, which was partially covered, but was somewhat exposed to the elements as well, including snow in the winter. I never covered it up. It was made of eucalyptus. Once a year, I stained with a three-step process of stain and sealers, it always “came back” to life after doing so. It was an all day project once a year, but worth it to keep the furniture looking good.
