The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into an apparent murder/suicide in The Villages, according to a press release from the department. I remember hearing of several situations like this over the years living here in The Villages. Most times one is terrible pain that cannot be addressed and the other cannot face life without them.

The Daily Sun has always had a policy not to print information about suicides out of respect.

I know that all of us feel very sad to read this report today.

Not the creeps at villagenews.com. They already published the property owners names even though the police have yet to announce the victims names.
So, which would you prefer, censoring news stories to make The Villages look better than it is, or publishing all available public information?

The reason for the Daily Sun's failure to report such news is it hits the image of a happy place and hence the developer's bottom line. While I enjoy reading it the DS is primarily a sales tool.

The reporter does not write well. The deputies noticed a person lying on the floor, not laying on it. “Laying” vs. “Lying” (“Lay” vs. “Lie”)–What’s the Difference? | Grammarly (https://www.grammarly.com/blog/lay-lie/)

I believe many newspapers do not cover suicides unless they also involve a murder, kidnapping or some other crime related somehow to the incidents. The Villages Daily Sun has covered a few of these though in the almost 18 years we have lived here. There was one involving someone jumping off the 27/441 bridge near Paradise Park and traffic having to swerve or something like that. Melinda Duckett's suicide and a few others.

What is unbelievable is your misinterpretation of my post. I am not griping about the developer. Business is business and the developer is extraordinarily successful. I am merely revealing the reality. Same with the reporter's grammar.

It looks like many newspapers do not report suicides unless they involve celebrities or some other crime. And even then they try to be careful how they report them.

Yes. I know of one unexpected suicide in TV of a wonderful man. Very sad but not reported. Just as well...

Really ! The developer is worried that people won't come to The Villages because someone committed suicide ! Some people will say anything to make the developer look bad. That's sad !

Suppression of news
is never good if Library
is true. Selection of news is different. I think we see that daily. If someone is curious enough they will find it
out. If the Sun wishes that it is their choice.

Hopefully, every time one happens they will use that space to advertise some sort of
Suicide prevention alternative.

I don’t get it either why people blame the developer for anything bad that happens in TV. If people are that upset about TV, they should just leave. They can make a profit on their house and then move outside of the bubble (like to LA, SF, Chicago, NYC for example) and then they can write about all the positive things like I went to the store today and I made it home without getting shot or mugged.

It's not just a suicide, it's suicide AFTER murdering someone. Is it sad? Maybe, but if it was their choice, then so be it. If one was in terrible uncontrollable terminal illness pain, they might have made the decision together and it was their choice to make. Of course, we don't know that yet, hopefully if it was their choice they left a note.

Generally as a common practice
out of respect for the family members the media doesn’t do much reporting of suicide.
If someone in your family died by suicide would you want all the details in the media , name address????

I disagree , people won’t seek help . There are many resources, the VA for example , every time I call the recording asks if you’re feeling suicidal press a certain number. When I am there for any treatment they ask if you’re suicidal.
Our healthcare system has a wealth of resource that you don’t know about apparently.

Your knowledge of what help is available for people who have reached desperation may help others. May I suggest you list what you know.

True words. Unfortunately people often don't think clearly in times of extreme stress.

Back in the day, oncall was assigned at our agency on a sign-up basis. Each person was responsible for a certain number of oncall weekends and holidays per year: it was always good to get your hands on the signup sheet early, or else you'd end up with Christmas or New Year's (always worse if they were part of a three-day weekend). Happened to me a few times. Christmas was always the worst, followed closely by New Year's and the accompanying problems that too much alcohol always seem to exacerbate. There were always calls that were borderline; often it was hard to tell the difference. We evaluated on the means-motive-opportunity criteria; if all three were present you had a legitimate emergency and we reacted accordingly. Talked a guy down from hanging himself once; Christmas and he was in the midst of a messy divorce. He had the rope and was on his way to the garage to do himself in. Fortunately someone in the home had the presence of mind to call the County CEP number; after a moderately long chat with the guy he agreed to hold off and to cooperate with the authorities who I dispatched immediately to his address. He ended up OK.

Unfortunately not all people are lucky enough to have a caring friend or family member to intervene. Often that is the only thing between a recovery (or at least an improvement in quality of life) and becoming a tragic statistic.

These are usually put somewhere in the back of the paper which is a good practice IMHO.

The reaction to this unfortunate incident is incredible. Posters in the comments section in the ************** are fighting about whether they were republicans or democrats. Here the fight is whether The Villages Sun is covering up the tragedy.
We should be concerned for the family and friends of the couple. Suicide is a selfish act causing pain to everyone who loved them and unfortunately also may cause copycat acts.

Truth. When Bourdain took the coward's way out, he let down many thousands, possibly millions of fans who had formed such a deep connection to him (much more so than just about any other celebrity), all the people who worked for/with him, his many friends throughout the world, and most importantly, family - his young daughter.
