I am having a hankering for some great fish and chips, anyone know the best place to go? I prefer plain batter (not beer batter), freshly cut fries, and a mug of great beer to chug it down. Your suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I had a British friend who turned me on to good fish and chips. Your mushy peas comment makes me realize you too must understand good fish and chips. Must be a British thing! Here's hoping Havana CC is what I am looking for! (Fingers crossed)

I don’t know what area you’re in but south of 44 has 2 options. Fenney Grill has good Fish and Chips but I always get the potato chips because they’re homemade. I’ve never had the fries. Or you could go to McGrady’s Pub at Sawgrass which even comes with mushy peas but I’m not sure about the fries.

I’m going to have to add my voice here as well - simply bad! I couldn’t finish it. My server actually told me afterwards that they had fried quite a few batches already in the fryer, so the oil was getting old - tasted like it too - plus the breading was the worst.

Been to Cody in LSL worst service we have ever seen in a restaurant and lots of people have told us the same so not going back.
O;Shucks had good fish and chips but we made the mistake of sitting outside. Borders a garbage dump apparently and flying insects ate more than we did. Finally waitress came over to us with a can of insect repellent but too little too late. If we do go back would only sit inside

Pubs or street vendors, both were addictive. Guessing it was the light almost tempura thin batter that allowed the fish to be perfectly flaky. :mmmm:

I make my own when I return to TV order clam juice and chopped clams thru Amazon 51oz containers some very good recipes online. Canned Clams and juice can be frozen. We make RI red chowder, New England cream and clear chowder. Less expensive than buying those little cans of clams and small bottles of juice.
A good canned Chowder made in Florida is Tony’s Chowder from Cedar Key won the Newport RI Chowder festival 2 years in a row available Publix.

In UK Cod is/was the most served, then Haddock, and my favorite, Rock Eel/Rock Salmon/Hus/Flake (any one of those names, depending on location of Chippy in UK.)
Anything apart from Cod, was a special order back in my days of going down our local Chippy.

Tried Fenney Grill in April. The fish and chips was pretty bad. Also the "farm to table" vegetables they served on the side were basically the frozen peas and carrots mix like they sell at Publix in the frozen section. I heard it "used to be good" according to some people.
In Wildwood, O'Shucks serves a nice Fish and chips, pretty consistent and usually you get a nice sized piece.
Best in the Villages I had was at Evans Prairie one night, was exceptional unlike much of the food they serve at FMK restaurants.

Lopez Country Club has decent fish and chips, as does Costal Del Mar in Spanish Springs. And believe it or not, Margarita Republic can have good fish tacos depending on the mood of the kitchen on a given night. That said, fish and chips is a bit like pizza...what you like may be different from someone else's likes.

The giant Fish Fingers at Tierra del Sol Country Club are the best I’ve had around here. Who knew fish had fingers? Actually lots of the country clubs and fish restaurants have fish and chips, and I’ve never had any that were lousy. However, I’ve NEVER had in The Villages, or the US, for that matter, what I consider REAL fish and chips like I used to buy weekly when I was studying at Oxford. Here the fish pieces are too small, usually too thin, and the batter is wrong. The fish is served with FRIES, not CHIPS (no, I don’t mean what the British call potato crisps and we call chips) Usually the fries are good, and maybe English style chips would be sent back to the kitchen here, but I think it’s hard for American cooks to recreate something they’ve never seen or tasted. Let them spend a day in a good British chip shop and they could do it. But then they have to put a big scoop of chips on a couple pieces of absorbent white paper, put a big plank of fish on top, ask “Salt and vinegar?” then douse everything with lots of both at the same time. Chips arrive with vinegar already on them and soaking in. Never catsup or tarter sauce or anything else. I like tarter sauce just fine with fried fish, but I would never have it with real fish and chips. (Oh, and chances are the best fish and chips will be cooked by people from India or Pakistan, or somewhere similar, if you are in the UK.)

I'm lucky enough to be in the UK right now. Had dinner at the Golden Hind in London. Excellent chippy. Light batter, not greasy, and perfectly cooked Haddock.

I love fish and chips! A good cod or haddock dipped in batter and deep fried. Thick slices of potato deep fried with it. Doused in vinegar and tartar sauce on the fish.
No restaurant down here can compare with New England restaurants for fish and chips.
However, the best I've had down here was at Cheers over in Stonecrest. Too bad there isn't a Chelo's down here.

I’m really surprised no one has mentioned Miller’s Ale House. My Polish American husband is an “expert” on fried fish and says theirs is the best he’s tasted in our area. Friends that we’ve recommended Miller’s to have loved their fried fish also. It’s beer battered white fish. Lunch portion is just the right size. Dinner portion is so big you’ll take some home.

I was brought the fried Haddock entree by mistake last night at Terra del Sol when I had ordered fried shrimp. I took the mistake entree because I had tickets to the show at The Studio and didn’t have enough time for the remake. I thought the fish was awful (the show was great). For a fast-food fish sandwich, I'd have to say Culver's is absolutely the best. I thin this is cod, though they served fried lake perch (a taste of home for folks from the Great Lakes area) during Lent.
For true (batter-dipped, deep-fried) fish and chips, I've really liked Miller's Ale House on 441 at the north end of The Villages. Just don't look at the calorie count on the menu - it's about a full day's worth of food, calorie-wise. I believe this is cod.
For something different (and crunchier) the fish fingers appetizer at The Fenney Grill is pretty tasty. The fish are rolled in corn flake and fried. The Lighthouse in Lake Sumter Landing serves a similar concoction. It's better than it sounds. I think this is haddock in both places, but I'm not sure.
For something NOT fried, the food truck at Edna's On The Green serves a blacked fish that is particularly tasty to me, though I think it's best when they manage to do it with redfish (which they can't always get).
I have generally not been impressed with the fish & chips at any of the country clubs I've tried. I think even Red Lobster has them beat, and I'm not a huge fan of Red Lobster. I mean, it's edible, but it's just not that great.

For those who like thick batter deep fried mild white fish, without the fishy smell or aftertaste, Captain D's in Leesburg is a good choice.

They can be kind of heavy-handed on the batter, but that' probably my second-favorite fast food place for a fish sandwich (after Culver's).

I've lived in The Villages for six years and I've tried all the restaurants for fish and chips. I'll give you the best and worst: The best, by far, is O Shucks on 301, and the very worst I've had was at Blue Fin.

Fortunately, it is only 20 minutes from Sawgrass (via Meggison), but Oakwood is basically across the street from the Seafood Shack. The smell of the Smokehouse is irresistible at times.

Havana CC has good fish and chips. Ask for mushy peas and you will get a blank stare.
I’m from New York City. What is mushy peas? I’ve never heard of it.

Thanks! I went to O'Shucks last night since that restaurant was named most often. Pretty Darn Good! Going to also try some of the other restaurants that were mentioned. Will give an update as I go.

Culver's
Worst fish ever right off the Gordons or Sysco truck. Once you get through the coating there is a very small piece of fish, never again...

Tony’s is wonderful, as good or better than some I had at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. BTW, they have a restaurant in Mt. Dora.

No idea how it is made but as far as I can tell they cook up a batch of green peas and than mash them.

There was the first red flag.
Bread crumbs!!! :ohdear:
Fried fish for fish and chips should be in batter only.
PS. It is even hard to find good fish and chips in UK nowadays.
The Golden Hind in London. Outstanding!

It's amazing that not one person commented on what type of fish is being served. Haddock, Cod, Tilapia, Swai or whatever.
Type of fish can make a big difference.
FACT CHECK: TRUE
Only Cod. . the others just aren't meaty enough for frying. .
and then drizzled with a touch of lemon or lime. .

So we scored tickets to the Open next summer in Troon, for the final day. We are entering the St Andrews drawing for guaranteed golf during the same time and I, as an expert fish and chips taster, will evaluate Scottish Fish and chips from the North sea. . and will report back to everyone who couldn't care less.

I am having a hankering for some great fish and chips, anyone know the best place to go? I prefer plain batter (not beer batter), freshly cut fries, and a mug of great beer to chug it down. Your suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Ok, now I have to go there. A good sausage roll is hard to find. The ones at Meat Boutique in Mt Dora are terrible.
I'm at the point where I make my own. So good and easy to make.
If you want sausage rolls you need British sausage meat. Try jollyposhfoods.com for real sausages. He's from the UK, she's from Chicago.
Try their links with frozen puff pastry, you have real English sausage rolls. I make them all the time for my family.

Mushy Peas are a standard side in the North of England and are served with fish and chips in the chip shops. Personally, I think they are disgusting, but if you are from the North of England you would love them. Google a recipe for them.
By the way, the very best Cod and Chips we ever had was in Whitby, Yorkshire in the Mag Pie. Fish sold right off the dock.
How about it Two Bills, fish and chips in Whitby?

Maybe where you came from. Sausage meat is sold in all the butcher's shops in the UK, sold by the lb. There are dozens of recipes that use sausage meat. Google it.

Whitby!!!
Nobody with any sense goes to Whitby.
Anywhere north of Watford Gap is populated with wild tribesmen, and Ancient Britons.
You were lucky to get out alive!:)
