Anyone going to EAA AirVenture (Oshkosh) this year ?

Oshkosh was so much easier when I was younger and living in Ohio. Although I am now almost 75 and living further away in Florida, my son and grandsons say there are willing to help me this year so I shall return. My plans are to have a great family adventure at Oshkosh to once again sell my authentic vintage maps. In addition, as I was a J-3 Cub owner for over 20 years and helped organize the Cub 75th in 2012, I will also once again sell the Cub shirts with coming and going views (front and back). Please come to visit my family as we talk Cubs, maps and living in the Villages, Florida.

I haven't been to Oshkosh since I sold my Vans RV6, back in '06. I'd love to go again, but after my a total disappointment at what had become of Sun-n-Fun since the last time I flew in, it's hard to get excited about flying commercial to Oshkosh to stay in a motel. Can you still walk five miles and never see the same airplane twice?

I doubt there is anybody today who puts on a show at Oshkosh to match the thrill of watching Delmar Benjamin tear up the sky in a Gee Bee R2! OMG, that was amazing! That maniac cut ribbons inverted, 20' off the ground, in a plane that killed everyone who ever flew it back in the 30's, except for Jimmy Doolittle! Delmar signed a copy of his book for me, wherein he revealed the secret to surviving the Gee Bee -- never land slower than 200 MPH!

Ok, now you've got me thinking about all those great times at Oshkosh with my old flying buddies. I wonder if you can get there on Southwest?

Have not been there for years. Formerly a Wisconsin resident I was a frequent attendee. My last memory was my final visit when the Concord flew in. Upon landing it taxied to the display area and just sat there for 5 minutes with nothing happening. Remember the concord flew faster than the speed of sound. Finally the PA announcer stated to the crowd; The passengers have watched a movie that ended upon landing and now they’re waiting for the movie’s sound to catch up before disembarking. Always a great experience.

I was raised in Wisconsin about 40 miles south of Oshkosh airport.
Air Adventure created the busiest airport in the world for that week.

The last couple working years I drove medical van for Milwaukee Veteran Hospital.
One afternoon driving north on Hy 41 with a load of Vets, the EAA was putting on a reenactment show dedicated to the pearl harbor bombing.
Those bombers circled to the west, dropped down over HY41 and simulated bombing in EAA grounds as the ground shook.

At that time of day, it was bumper to bumper traffic, and everyone was looking up at the sky looking at the low flying planes trying to drive at the same time.

I surely thought I was going to get rear ended with all the excitement.

Anyone remember the EAA afternoon show of the world's shortest runway?

A flatbed truck speeding down the runway and a Pieper Cub dropped down on the truck
bed and took off again?

I have flown into Oshkosh for the show twice in my J-3 Cub, 4 times in my Cessna 210 and over ten times in a 1959 Cessna 182 that I owned many years ago. I remember spending many nights sleeping in a tent under the wing of my aircraft with my son and other friends. Sometimes I could only spend the weekend and other times would spend the whole week. Great times, many adventures, and enjoyed seeing people who I would meet year after year at this show. I am really looking forward to my return this year to Oshkosh even thought I will be driving (not flying) and selling my maps.

I've been there once, about ten years or so ago. Didn't fly there--by brother and I talked about it but decided that driving was the better way to go. Fantastic! I particularly enjoyed all the vintage airplanes, especially the Beech Staggerwings and Stinson gull-wing airplanes; the epitome of luxury in 1930's America.

Wanted to take a ride in the ford Tri-Motor but the four-hour wait and hefty price tag decided me against it.

I'll never forget the night a flying buddy and me were camped NEXT to the wing of my old Piper Cherokee. There was a huge storm that blew down our tent and we wound up shivering under the wing of a Murphy Moose, afraid to trust the Cherokee's tie-downs in that wind. That Moose was so big, the owner and his wife slept through the whole thing in the back of their plane! We got to know them real well and spent the next several evenings under that wing, drinking beer and swapping airplane stories.

A few weeks later, I read in GA News that they'd crashed while landing at his home field, on the way home. Hit a high wire on final that they must have dodged a million times at their little airpark in Arkansas. Why does stuff like that happen? I think the dark side of GA probably had as much as $7 avgas did with running me out of the hobby.

But it's sure hard to get it out of your system. Man, I miss my RV6! (Not to mention the annual pilgrimage to Oshkosh!)

There is a direct flight from Sanford to Appleton. Friends and family have taken that several times and either rented or Ubered to Oshkosh. I personally drive and explore stuff on the way, yeah it's a 7 - 10 days trip but so much fun.....this year includes the US Air Force Museum in Dayton for instance.

I enjoyed spending over a week with my son and one grandson at EAA Oshkosh 2023. The picture is one of us manning our booth for the seven day event. My grandson/we all learned a lot on this great family adventure. Thank goodness it was only very hot for two days as both the dorm room and the large hanger D at Oshkosh were not airconditioned.

And, we were able to expand our booth for free on the third day which provided us with a lot more space.

I grew up in Oshkosh and attended the event regularly. I remember Steve Whitman flying his stunt plane. My sister has worked the event for many years.

Wish I would have seen this earlier, I would have definitely stopped by.

We go to Oshkosh every year and camp out under-wing across from the ultralight barn in Vintage. Our group, the Metro Warbirds, is fairly large and we celebrated our 40th year this year. On Monday night, we hosted ‘brat’ night and served around 300 people. Fun times.

A year ago I took over as president of the Leesburg EAA chapter 534. You should stop by sometime. On Thursday and Saturday mornings the hangar is a buzz with the hangar monkeys working on projects. Currently we have C150, Murphy, Pietenpol and Stinson projects. The Stinson is our newest project and we are planning to have our youth program recover it and then hopefully sell it to fund the completion of our C150. Once completed, the C150 will transfer to a flying club to promote youth aviation through flying lessons and young eagle flights.

We lived many years in Kohler and Elkhart Lake WI. Oshkosh was a hop skip and a jump away. Boy it gets busy during the EAA.
