We love animals and birds. We have a multilevel birdhouse in our back that has provided shelter and breeding for little House Sparrows. They are so cute and lively. There have been at least 10 broods of these birds over the past few years. Lots of babies hatched. Matter of fact one of the condos has three little ones now chirping for their food.
We also have a nice bird feeder in our front yard. They and other birds love it.
But. Yesterday we saw a Hawk loitering around, and in the afternoon had a little bird in his mouth on our driveway and then finally flew off. We’ve seen Hawks before but never one with (one of our birds) for lunch. Yuck.
Yes, it’s nature and circle of life, but….
If I see another Hawk nearby I may go out to get a shotgun. Gotta protect our little birdies.
Any idea in how to get rid of Hawks?

If there were no predators the World would be over-run with prey. Don't worry about the smaller birds - they produce enough babies to ensure the continued existence of the species.

It does not look like you could fire a shotgun at the hawk in most Villages' properties.
I have heard shotgun blasts from various farms near here though.

I think you just need a bill of sale, signed by the buyer and seller. As a seller, I would require identification and include the serial number on the bill of sale.
If I were selling a handgun, I would also require the buyer to have a current concealed carry permit in Florida. That way, you know the buyer has a legal right to own a firearm.

For the sale to be legal:
1. Both buyer and seller must be (primary) residents of Florida.
2. Neither buyer nor seller can have a felony conviction on his/her record.
3. Neither buyer nor seller can be habitually addicted to illegal drugs or alcohol.
4. Both must be at least 21 years of age.
5. Neither can be under indictment for a felony.
If you meet these conditions and the gun is a legally owned gun, then you don't NEED to have any paperwork done to make the sale.
However, I would recommend that you draw up a simple Bill of Sale stating what is being sold, who the buyer and seller are, date of the sale, and amount gun is being sold for. Then both Buyer and Seller sign the Bill of Sale and furnish a copy of the Bill of Sale to each for their records.
I'm not an attorney and this is not to be construed as legal advice.

Well, Hawks are protected by law so you might just want to let nature take its course on this one. I mean you want to kill a bird for killing a bird?!

Thanks, good information. That disqualifies me since Florida is not yet my primary residence. Will be eligible for Medicare soon and then I can declare Florida as primary residence, not pay state income taxes, and get homestead exemption. Until then I have to buy insurance through the Massachusetts state exchange to be in network for our doctors up north. I’m otherwise in no hurry to get any older, but can’t wait to be eligible for Medicare and the national network that goes with it.

Yeah, quit feeding the birds.
We have bluebird house and between the hawks and black birds,
many hatchings never survive when bird feeders are up.
My neighbors have bird blues and refuse to feed them but never told me why.
Now I know
Bird feeders attract trouble for other birds when they are nesting

I think I've read where some people have put some screening around the bird houses and leave enough room for the birds to fly in and out, but yet small enough where predators cannot access the nesting area. Seems it could work.

Here is a clarification of a couple of things in my previous post (shown above). The federal law is actually LESS restrictive than I indicated above. The seller does NOT have to verify items 2, 3, or 5 above.
It is only required that the seller not KNOWLINGLY sell to someone who would otherwise be disqualified by the issues listed in items 2, 3, or 5 above. In other words, you don't have to do a background check on the buyer.
"Under federal law, private gun sales between unlicensed people are legal so long as (1) the buyer lives in the same state as the seller, and (2) the seller doesn't know (or have reason to believe) that the buyer is prohibited from having a gun. Federal law requires no background checks for these private, intrastate transactions, but many states do."
Is it illegal to buy a gun for someone else? | CriminalDefenseLawyer.com (https://www.criminaldefenselawyer.com/resources/is-it-illegal-buy-a-gun-someone-else.htm)
As for complying with Florida state law, it's the same as the federal law.
"The only requirements are 1) the buyer must be 21 years or older; and 2) the buyer must not be a prohibited person. What if you did not know your neighbor was convicted of a felony many years ago? Could you get in trouble for selling him your Glock? No, only your neighbor would be committing a felony. However, if you knew that he was a prohibited person and you decided to sell the gun to him anyway, then you both are committing felonies. The law does not require you to ask the buyer if he or she is a prohibited person, but if you know you cannot complete the sale."

Stop feeding the birds. You are creating the situation.
There is plenty of natural food around to keep them all going.
Birds congregating at food sources will attract predators.
The only time I give any help to our local bird life is when ground is frozen or covered in snow, and then it is minimal and stopped as soon as conditions change.
Fortunately we only have one cat roaming in our area, and he is so fat and lazy, he's not a problem.

July 1 no concealed carry license required; however, FL laws on purchases must still be followed. Not sure how private sales are conducted according to FL law. New purchases will still require background check, 3 day waiting period I had read recently.
Most importantly what goes up must come down. A man died on New Years Eve in Orlando years ago. Some idiot decided to shoot his gun up into the air to celebrate. The bullet came down a couple blocks away and hit a man in the back of his head. You cannot just shoot a shotgun in T V.
Personally I can't watch the circle of life on tv relevant to animals so I get the OP's compassion for the sweet little birds; but a shot gun is not the answer.

You want to shoot a hawk to protect a bunch of hot-blooded sparrows making ten broods of chicks per year? They are probably on welfare, anyway. That hawk is doing the world a favor.

All Florida raptors are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and under Florida law. This means the birds themselves, their nests, and their eggs are protected by federal and state law. Inactive nests (no young or eggs present) of non-listed hawks can be removed without a permit (Rule 68A-16.003). Nests of Eagles, Crested Caracara, Snail Kite, American Kestrel, and Ospreys in Monroe County cannot be removed under this rule. If the hawk nest is active with eggs or chicks in the nest, removal permits are needed from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
What can be done without a permit?
Avoid areas near the nest, if possible. If you must go through the area, carry an open umbrella or wear a hard hat.
Temporarily erect a shade structure to obstruct the birds’ view of people and pets.
Planting shrubbery can also provide cover for pets and birds visiting feeders.
Sometimes you may be able to use an air horn to deter birds that start to dive.
During the non-breeding season, trim branches to eliminate perches and help resolve recurring issues.
Eliminate attractants that may attract prey such as rodents into your yard. Items like unsecured garbage, fallen bird seed and pet food are common household attractants that may entice prey species onto your property.

I don’t want to sound mean but simple solution is don’t feed the birds or any wildlife for that matter. This is nature and natural for animals to fend for themselves. Even though we humans are taking up more space mother nature adapts and provides.

New York has a very odd procedure for a carry license. I first had to buy a handgun, but not take possession of it. THEN I went through the process to legally carry THAT handgun. The serial number is on my license. Were I not granted the carry license, I am not really sure what would happen to the gun. Would I lose the money spent on it? Another odd thing with NY and NJ, as hard as it is to get one, they are for life.

If I am wrong tell me, but I am 99.99999 sure he was kidding about the shotgun. Like when a date would pick up one of my girls in HS, and they'd wait in the library with me where I'd be cleaning my guns. The 3 day waiting period is a Florida law that has been in effect for about a two years or so. The background check is a Federal law that only applies to purchases from a licensed firearm dealer.
Three day waiting period? Is that for the first one only?

It applies to all gun purchases from a licensed firearm dealer. But, if you purchase a gun online to be delivered to a dealer, the 3-day period starts at the time of the purchase. So, by the time you pick up the firearm, the 3 days could be over.
I think the 3-day law was passed a few years ago, shortly after a mass shooting in Florida.

THIS^^^^^^^
I once saw a guy kill a snake because it was eating a frog. Ridiculous.
These animals aren't being mean or aggressive. They are simply living. This is what happens in nature every day. It is we humans that put labels like "cute" or "scary" on animals. They are simply animals eating.

You created a feeding ground for the hawks and now you want to shoot them. That’s not right. I had a lot of feeders up north that brought the hawks. Hard to see them snatch up other birds but the hawks are beautiful too. I wonder if it’s even legal to shoot hawks.

Yuck.

Guns are on open display with pots and pans at the Webster flea market. Cash and carry.
If the sellers are not observing the three day waiting period or checking to see if the buyer has a concealed carry permit, they are breaking the law.
And why would they be on open display? Isn't that how items are sold?

I know hyperbole when I see it. :)
In fact, your post brought back a memory of a cleverly staged prom picture of a friend’s daughter, posing with her date for pictures before leaving the house.
There they were — the teenage couple, all dressed up for the first prom picture……
That picture of her and her date included her 3 brothers and her dad. Her dad was holding a shotgun. One of her brothers had a pistol. There was a brother holding a chainsaw, and another one had an ax.
It was a very funny picture.

Same happened to me but the Hawk grabbed the bird from a tree. I heard the commotion and told my husband to chase the hawk away he did not and it got the bird. After the wrath of his angry wife I can assure you he will not allow another one to hang out on our property. Just bang pots they will fly away. Nothing you can do if they just swoop down to grab the bird, small squirrel, rabbit or even a small pup. It is the Circle of Life. If you are in the Villages I would not fire off a shotgun unless you want to be in the Village News the following day.

Residents still have the option to have a permit.
There are two reasons that some might want to. One is just what we're talking about here. There is no waiting period when purchasing a firearm. The second is that Florida has a reciprocal arrangement with 38 other states that allows permit holders to carry in those states. That will only apply if you have a permit.

I would imagine they will keep it forever due to reciprocity with other states. If you don’t have an actual CCW you won’t be able to carry legally in most states outside of Florida that currently recognize our permit.

First, you need to know that hawks are protected in the United States under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 (16 USC, 703-711). It is illegal to harm them, or to hunt, trap, cage, shoot, or poison them without a permit.

Far as feral cats, they do not last long before they are killed by one of the many predictors around here. Should you see one it is likely a recently escaped or abandoned pet.
Laws fascinate me. Should you hit a dog with your car, the law is you have to report it.
If, you hit a cat you do not need to report it.

If they are selling guns at a flea market, they are violating the law that requires firearm dealers to be licensed. I don't think it would be considered a private sale between two people.
Anyone can rent a table at a flea market, there is no requirement for it to be a licensed business. If an individual wants to sell some of their PRIVATE firearm collection, they can legally do so at the flea market and it is still considered a private sale between two people. No background check is required by federal law. Now, if the seller is constantly selling guns at a flea market, the ATF might classify that action as for profit commercial sales and the seller would be required by federal law to have an FFL.
A friend of mine had an extensive firearm collection that he accumulated over years. As he got older, he decided to divest himself of the guns so his widow wouldn't have to contend with it. He would rent a table at gun shows and sell his guns at the show. Perfectly legal as he wasn't selling them as a profit making business and they were from his private collection.
It is also ILLEGAL under federal law and many state laws that prohibited individuals, convicted felons, spouse beaters, drug addicts and a few other categories, are not allowed to purchase or possess a firearm or ammunition for a firearm.

You are correct that you can make "occasional" sales of a private gun collection at a flea market. But, someone who is displaying guns along with pots and pans at a flea market is asking for trouble with the Feds and the state, especially if he is a regular flea market seller.

First the shotgun comment was hyperbole. Some here really thought I would take a shotgun to a hawk???! Some of the comments re that were off the top laughable. And the many comments in how to buy a gun, and not. Jeez…
For the guy that said if I move to TV it better not be near him. I am in TV and I feel the same.
And the continual slam re bird feeder etc etc. it is in front of our home and the birdhouses in back.
Some of my OP comment was tongue-in-cheek, but I guess I need to point that out when posting.
As for some of the nasty comments, easy from behind a keyboard. One needs thick skin at times when opening a Thread.
Bottom line, never saw a hawk since and the little birdies are happily feeding out front and starting and caring for their new broods in back. Life goes on…

Bird Feeders spread Avian Flu. Plus they attract rodents and disrupt migration. If you love these animals like you say, then you would take them down. The birds are very capable foraging on their own, just as nature intended. It’s really the best way to help them.

Hawks do what they are supposed to. They are birds of prey and are protected. Move the bird cages to a safer location. Using a shotgun is a bit extreme. If you miss, these shotgun pellets will scatter and may hit someone. Also, discharging a weapon within city limits is illegal and irresponsible. Again, move the cages and feeders.

OMG folks. Don’t you review prior postings before doing your thing? Review my post from last night above to explain. No shotgun!!!!! Just hyperbole from me on first post. And that are not “cages” they are birdhouses with small holes for entry. Jeez.

Hawks are birds too.
Hawks lives matter. I guess little birds lives matter too. Maybe not as much as a hawk?

I only relocated squirrels captured in my heartless trap which were eating through the soffits into the attic to raise little ones. .
The trap would accidentally fall into the ocean for a few minutes and then the tide would take them away. . .
They are too smart to forget where they live.

You actually have a trap called heartless. Talk about a marketing issue.

BB Rifle
a .22 pellet would probably do it, but the guy has his heart set on using a shotgun.

It's the natural order of things. You said it in the opening line. You have seen many generations take flight. Feral cats kill 10 times as many and are not a rung in the natural realm of preditors. If you want to keep cars away I would recommend a nice pellet rifle. No noise and very effective!

LOL, are you saying then you can kill a Feral cat, maybe you can but you’re still not allowed to sling a shotgun over your shoulder & sneak up on a feral cat & discharge a gun, period. You would have to choke it to death!

I am not sure he understands how to use the choke on the shotgun. I have learned so much from this post.
Here in the Villages it's mostly the bluebirds that are displaced by the invasive sparrow.
Problems With House Sparrows
House sparrows can cause many problems for native birds, including competing for nesting sites, even killing adult birds, hatchlings, and eggs; taking over food sources and reducing diversity at feeders; and crowding out less aggressive birds from traditional ranges and habitats. While all bird species may suffer somewhat from the invasion of house sparrows, particularly vulnerable species include:
Eastern and western bluebirds
Purple martins
Tree and cliff swallows
Orioles
These birds are often in direct competition with house sparrows for food and nesting sites, and house sparrows’ more aggressive, bullying behavior is often successful in displacing them.1

to discharge a firearm in the villages unless protecting life or property. I feel your desire to rid a protected bird because you don't find them as "cute" is wrong. Any bird of prey you'd kill would be replaced by another bird of prey. When your cute birds are food for these hawks it is ...as you say...the circle of life and whether they are killed near your home or a mile away is not under your control. Just accept it.

Seems as if so many posters simply read the FIRST post then give their two cents. For the third time - take some time to read other posts, esp mine the OP, to not waste your time with the same yada about a shotgun and my hyperbole.

If you buy a shotgun and cut off 75% of the barrel, you will get a much larger pattern and be much more effective.

#1 you will go to jail for discharging a gun in a residential area
#2 Hawks are protected
#3 House Sparrows spend their time raiding and eating the eggs of other birds. ie our Blue Bird house
#4 Hawks eat rodents and snakes they are far more useful than House Sparrows
#5 why not switch to Bat houses they eat mosquitoes and other annoying bugs. Much more useful then sparrows eating eggs

Wouldn’t mind taking out the feral cats decimating our nesting cardinals this year. Not a single nest has had birds survive.
Catch a couple and take them to sparrows house

Just buy a sportsman’s sling shot and some large lead pellets. Hawk’s are large targets. If you don’t want to (dust ‘em) kill them, use the rubber pellets.

Will a fake owl keep hawks away?
Place Decoy’s
Hawks won't attack when they see their natural enemies or other larger animals in the yard. A large owl statue or scarecrow are easy additions to your yard that keeps hawks away.

Well, I didnt read all 9 pages, but house sparrows are considered vermin in the US. Id thank you not to encourage them since they are really just flying mice.
In MA, on our farm, we regularly trapped and dispatched them.
Go Hawk!!

A pellet or bb gun will have little effect on a car. The original poster was right to insist on using a shotgun.

The sparrow spoken of may be an invasive species, so the hawk is doing you a favor. Stop feeding them and do not be stupid about shooting firearms in populated areas.
Can you believe he is so insistent on shooting a shotgun in the Villages. I mean who does that. A prior post said it is common in Kentucky of Tennessee> Unbelievable.

You can get a nice air rifle with a scope for around $200.00. They are quiet and believe me they’ll do the trick!
It would be very dangerous to shoot a gun of any type in the Villages due to the closeness of all the houses. You will hit something and it could be another house or person. It would be very reckless.
