View Full Version : Door to Door Solicitation under false pretense

Yesterday a very polite elderly man knocked on my door and indicated he wanted me to inform me as a courtesy he would be walking on property in the back to inspect the "Spectrum" cable lines. I indicated ok, then he asked me if I used Xfinity, since they are very expensive, and he also used them. I did not want to answer any more questions, and he kept talking about how he could save me money on a government program and wanted additional information. I told him I was not interested and to leave...I finally had to close the door on him.

If he was truly with Spectrum, I do not apricate high pressure sales tactics, and under false pretense...he never did go in the back and inspect "the underground Spectrum Cable lines"

Hmmmm, how do you inspect underground cable? Did he have a big S on his chest?

Did you ask to see any proper ID ?

I would call Spectrum to see if he was legit. I have seen some survey companies doing work around my Village to map out burying lines.

There is a government savings plan that if you're under a certain income you can get Xfinity internet for free.

I only answer through ring doorbell. It records them and audio that you can give to police for investigation

They are legit with business cards, logo shirts, and signs on their vehicles and are actually offering some pretty good deals with guaranteed rates and no contract. They are also working to upgrade their equipment so you will see them at the boxes over the next several weeks. No mis-representation, their visits are two-fold. I listened to the entire offer and chose to stick with Xfinity as I like their customer service and never had a problem with them over the last 2 years.

A Spectrum gentleman interrupted me while I was weeding the other day (which could be another entire thread ... so many weeds, little bitty ones ... every day ... but I digress). He was at the box which is on our property and tried to give me his spiel. I said I wasn't interested (did I mention the weeds?), but he kept going and said "I am required to inform you" explaining some changes that meant savings, regardless of the carrier we use. Interesting that this is legit. Thanks for the thread.

I had a gentleman on my block in Fenney from Spectrum. He rang my bell and immediately presented his ID and the car/van he was driving also said Spectrum. No hard sell, he offered me a signup deal and when I said no he thanked me and left.

Seems unnecessary since I get a mail offer twice a week

I thought Florida was a 2 party state, meaning both parties have to know they’re recording audio, or is that only for the phone?
I’ve seen people actually go to jail for not telling the other party they were recording.

I believe in public you may video and record anything as long as you are standing on a public space (i.e. sidewalk). If you are on your own property, may be different? If anyone knows please pass the info on.

If you see solicitors going door to door in your area, please contact Community Standards at (352) 751-3912 as solicitation is not permitted in The Villages.

WOW! Is that how to get rid of solicitors? What a neat product it must be.

I wish people would stop posting this wrong opinion. Solicitation is permitted. Certain solicitors are required to get a permit from the county, some are not. People giving information and not selling anything are not solicitors which is why roofers can offer a free roof inspection. Charities and political parties are exempt from all restrictions.

If solicitation is permitted, why does The Villages post no soliciting signs at the entrances to some villages? There is a sign at the Rt 466A entrance to Pine Hills and Pine Ridge.

Also, I don't know about county permits, but the State of Florida has a law that requires a permit for any soliciting.

I have a ring doorbell and I will tape anything I want on my property and I do not give a damn who or what doesn’t like it. It is part of my security system.

And you're wrong. The state of Florida has a law that requires a permit for some soliciting and specifically exempts any permit requirement for many other forms. Google is your friend, as is reading comprehension. I'll do the first for you

When you read it you might glean that permits are obtained at the county level for those non-exempt forms of solicitation. No solicitation signs are meaningless unless they are posted on privately owned streets. Again you can google this question any way you like and will learn the facts about Florida law and door to door solicitation.

Record the wrong people at the wrong time and you will be explaining to the State of Florida that you don't give a damn they don't like it.

No, not likely to happen, but it would be interesting to see how your tough talk stacks up against State and Federal law.

You didn't really answer my question. If solicitation is permitted, why does The Villages have "no soliciting" signs at the entrance gates? I think that is why people continue to post that soliciting is not permitted.

Because it is an attempt to dissuade soliciting. Nothing more.

The streets and sidewalks belong to the county. Driveways belong to the homeowners. Community watch, or "The Villages" has no authority to tell anyone that they cannot be in either of those places.

The Villa streets aren't owned by the county. Weird, but true.
