View Full Version : Culvers 466A Restaurant Issues

We recently visited Culver's on 466A on Tuesday. I have been a Culver's fan since I frequented them up north. However, after getting a sandwich, chicken fingers and fries, we came down with severe food poisoning and ended up in the ER Saturday. The doctor suspected food poisoning after tests and discussions. In talking to the nurse she said her friend also got sick from Culver's recently, and so did a store clerk saying her sister got sick, and so did a friend. That is too coincidental. I am just wondering if there are others that got sick, thought it may have been a virus, and did nothing but just let it run its course. I doubt though if we will be going back anytime soon.

It happens in restaurants a lot more upscale than Culver's and it's will keep on happening. I once got it from a cream/horseradish sauce and I called the restaurant the next day as I thought I was going to die that night. The owner grilled me like I was a criminal until I finally told him I'm not looking for anything from you except to get your staff to practice safe handling methods and then he finally apologized. This is why God created 2 bathroom homes.

Our guests had a similar experience of what was determined to be "stomach flu" at the Trailwinds emergency hospital. They had picked up Culvers late on Tuesday. Both were sick for at least 3 days. I picked up PDQ for my wife that day. Could be coincidental for sure.

I totally agree with this one.
I don't think we have reach the peak on food poisoning with all the lack of help there is out there.

I hear up north that some businesses are shutting the doors and opening just on weekends because people refuse to work and are not preparing food correctly.

Got sick from Chick-fil-A also. I was never a fan of Culver's. Custard ice cream not even close to tasting like custard.

Recently visited a very popular resort bar in Leesburg and Hellman’s mayonnaise was displayed in the heat at every station on the bar along with catsup and mustard. A serious issue as everyone knows mayo will spoil in the heat.

Welcome to the club. Four of us went to an Ihop in Naples, Fl. a few years ago for breakfast on the way to play Golf. I don't remember exactly what I got. It was a spicy hot omelet I think. Later that night we were at a small theater when I got the sickest. It was terrible. The uncontrollable mess that I made was embarrassing to say the least. To this day I have no desire to eat at an Ihop ever again.

I know this is not the topic under discussion.
But there was a sign claiming Burger-fi was going to open in the same area, does anyone know what happened the sign is no longer there.

At that same Culver's, I got sick from a haddock fish sandwich during Lent.

That day, I commented that the front-end staff on 466A didn't look like they shaved or washed their hair to come to work, etc. Hey, truth hurts.

Later that day, I was kicking myself for proceeding with the order. Never felt that way at the Culvers on 466, or any other place, actually.

Haven't been back since and crossed them off my list.

"What can we make fresh for you today?" :mmmm: :yuck:

Wow, that's my main Culver's go to spot. Noooooo!!!!!! :22yikes:

I've eaten at the new Culvers on 466A 10 times and 466 3 times in the last year and never got sick. I order the same thing, kids meal butter burger and the custard.

Love me some Culvers, sad to hear about the FP. I don't know that I ever got FP as long as 3 days, maybe just for one day. On those rare occasions I'm thinking what did I eat different that my stomach didn't like. Over a month ago I had to run to the bathroom after I took too much zinc (1); those supplements are too strong for me (way over the FDA req) and so I stopped taking them after a few incidents.

I also have a non-barf streak going since the summer of 1986 when I challenged that big hawaiian dude on tequila shots. There went all my tako poke! (never again!)

Another thing is I go to Culver's within the first hour after they open, so from 1030-1145ish. So maybe poop-fingers doesn't work early?

Similar to what another said here eating out is like russian roulette. At one point you gonna get the bullet. I only eat out maybe once a week if that much, so maybe I dodged a few germs.

Not ready to cross my Culver's off the list yet.

I've had Kohr's custard which is dense and creamy and bursting with flavor. Culver's custard tastes the same and has the same consistency as Kohr's custard. I think they are both delicious. What am I missing?

People are not refusing to work, they went to better jobs during the pandemic and are not coming back and the state of FL sent undocumented workers out of the state about 600,000. Good luck on finding help in areas that privileged don't want to work.

What kinds of “better jobs”? Those who were working in the food service industry would hardly gain the knowledge and skills within such a short amount of time to waft them onward and upward. More likely they are on extended unemployment or one of the many entitlement programs which were enhanced during Covid.

The best thing our County Commissioners could do for the restaurants and us taxpayers is to increase the budget to hire additional health inspectors. Good health is important to us all.

Lack of help has absolutely nothing to do with food poisoning.

It’s more likely the lack of training. My Dad was very “strict” with my chores. “Son, any job worth doing, is worth doing well.” Just from observing behavior it’s not the same today, with a few exceptions. The “everybody gets a trophy” isn’t the same as any job worth doing is worth doing well.

The last inspection of Culver's on Sundance Trail was due to a complaint way back on 2/13/23. Nothing since then.

Anyone suspecting food poisoning should report it here:

Or you can call: 850-245-4444

I am very surprised that the hospital did not call it in.

Food poisoning five days after. Suspicious.

This from the Mayo Clinic:
Symptoms usually start within hours or several days of eating the food. Most people have mild illness and get better without treatment.
Sometimes food poisoning causes severe illness or complications.
TIMING:
Listeria (bacterium) 9 to 48 hours for digestive disease. 1 to 4 weeks for body-wide disease.

Absolutely, but why would one assume it was the food eaten four days ago rather than the food eaten four hours ago?

NOTE: The OP did not say when they began to feel ill, only that they went to the ER four days after eating at the restaurant.

Lack of help has absolutely nothing to do with food poisoning.

It sure does.

Many times, lack of help cuts corners on food safety.
Their training periods are shorter.
Their over worked and doing the job of 4.
Because of all the above, most don't know what proper hygiene is

It’s not just Culver’s, my wife and I went out for ice cream one afternoon last weekend and we both wound up spending the better part of that evening and night on the toilet. She had pistachio in a waffle cone and I had a bowl of sugar free raspberry swirl, so it must have been the employee scooping the ice cream, not the ice cream itself?

It could be the dreaded Norovirus. Very similar symptoms to food poisoning. No cure, No immunity. You can get it repeatedly. There was recently a huge outbreak on a cruise ship so maybe they docked in Miami and it came ashore?!

We have eaten at both Culver's with no problem ... always good hot meals and seemed to have clean employees . Each time we go, I respond to the survey. When Culver's was still in early days, I gave a very critical response about several things. The manager called me within 15 minutes !! Surprise !! We had a great discussion and things were changed. The surveys really are important ... esp when you have a problem . BUT if food poisoning ... be sure to CALL and talk with manager. Also might be good to call Board of Health to report.

Exactly. Two days = 48 hours.

Five days later and they blame it on Culvers? After about 12-15 other meals, it's Culver's fault.

Sounds like an attack on Culver's instead of the other way around.

No sickness here but after eating in Three different Culvers in the Tampa area and enjoying the food we have eaten in the one on 466A on three occasions and found the food to be far less palatable then the restaurants in the Tampa area. Did not get sick but the taste and quality were definitely not on par with the other stores.

I pretty much figured that out after eating at a busy bar/restaurant on a small island in the Sea of Abaco (Bahamas). The Mayo jar was kept on a shelf of the bar. The thinking was that, as long as it wasn't contaminated by a dirty knife or spoon, the vinegar in the Mayo would preserve it.

So food only gets prepared correctly on weekends?

I'm not the original poster, but I don't think the person meant food can only be prepared "correctly" on weekends, NOT at all. Some places are deciding to open ONLY on weekends, or Th through Sun, because the ONLY have enough trained, EXPERIENCED, staff who know correct preparation and handling to cover 4 days, so of course they choose the the long weekend. Many places in all states are not able to hire the quality of people they need to be open 7 days a week. If a person is observant, it is easy to see employees everywhere, from doughnut shop to fine dining are not as well educated, trained, and knowledgeable about disease, how food borne diseases are spread, and even have the same background in the importance of personal hygiene.... the etiquette of which is also intertwined with the employee's background and how much personal hygiene and kitchen hygiene is practiced in their own life and homes.
