A home in my neighborhood was gutted by fire yesterday. I was surprised that there was no media coverage in the paper or NewsBreak. I was interested to know the cause of the fire.

Unless deaths occur in a house fire, most newspapers don't report on them.

Village of Charlotte. We saw the black smoke at 5:40am yesterday. So sorry. It looks like a total loss.

Hoping to get that info. If nothing else could cause some of us to make changes to prevent our own fire.

At the POA presentation on lightning last month it was stated The Villages continues to use Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing for gas lines. They are legal but cheapest option and they need to be properly installed. As a homeowner, you can pay to have them redone to make your house safer.

Houses in Charlotte are all electric.

Gas lines in many TV homes run thru the attics and are flexible plastic lines. Flexible stainless steel connectors for stove and dryer are safe. To try to connect your stove with black iron if stainless steel is not safe enough and the lines in your attic are plastic.

Where is your neighborhood? Houses built before 2008, when gas was offered/available, were susceptible to fires from lightening strikes because the gas lines were run up through the attics.

Actually, it might take close to six months before the snowbirds arrive.

I don’t think it matters that much if you have a gas or electric home if there is a direct, powerful lightning strike. I think it makes us feel better/safer if we think we can shield ourselves somehow but the reality is if you are afraid of being hit by lightning don’t live in one of the most lightning-prone areas in the country.

I put in lightning rods last year. A1 lightning protection services put it in excellent job. They also grounded the gas line up in the attic and also the meter. And they attach to any metal objects on the roof within 6 feet of their full copper cables.

I do believe that in the past 20 years a number of the fires in TV were related to golf cart battery charging. Probably more so than the gas lines. Lightning strikes were probably the least reported causes.

Houses in Charlotte were built after 2008. In 2008 houses in Hemingway were built. It was built all-electric, although there was a way to bring in gas, at least for cooking, if the house was located close enough to a TECO line. We tried but our house was too far.

Years ago, I rented a villa in LSL. A lightening strike blew out several appliances...the A/C, garage door opener, water heater and sprinklers. Next door, the printer in the owners' office started to melt. His wife smelled something burning and they caught the issue before it created a larger fire.

As each repairman came to fix the issues in the all electric villa, I asked if they received many calls like this. Each repairman stated yes, lightening strikes keep them very busy. One told me I was lucky the house did not burn down. Then stated that usually happens in homes with gas lines.

Perhaps, in this case an appliance caught on fire and the owner was unaware. Also, I had an elderly Aunt who would forget to turn off the stove or would leave other appliances running. Maybe this is what happened.

I also just recently read that lithium batteries have caused several home fires in New York. I believe the article stated it was three incidents in one week. The article went on to state that you should be very mindful of the lithium batteries you purchase. Cheap generic types should be avoided.

Please keep us posted on the cause of the fire. Knowledge is power! In this case, it may save lives.

Have been beseeching the Rain God for water the last few weeks. Don't recall seeing any rain or hearing thunder the night the fire occurred. Had to wait until yesterday for that. So the cause may not be lightning. It would be useful to know. Even The V******N*** hasn't covered the story.

I never thought I would say this. I am glad to not have gas.

I was in a shared limo returning home on a business trip in the 1990s. A VP of New England Electric system was in the limo, and he said that the only problem with gas is that it goes :boom: so never have it.

as well as ventilation issues, no thanks for cooking. . . gas heating is good,
heating water with solar even better with much higher efficiency than turning it into electricity!

It wasn’t lightning. We were riding our bikes at 5:30am when we heard the fire trucks and saw the smoke. Sky was clear no rain or storms then

Appealing to Rain Gods is useless.
In UK we have had an extended dry period for many many weeks.
Some areas are already on water restrictions.
Then Wimbledon Tennis started, along with Test Cricket against Australia.
The skies have opened and flood alerts are in place.
Works every time.
The Scottish Golf Open is on as well, and soon The Open Golf Tournament.
We don't need no stinking Rain Gods!

And don't spend any money on surge protection because that and lightning protection systems don't work right? lol

All this damage and expense could have bee avoided.

I was renting the villa but I believe the owner bought surge protectors after this incident. I am happy to share my experiences here in the villages and YES please invest in surge protectors! They may save your home and possibly your life!
