View Full Version : Blocking a poster

Is there a way to add a poster to a list so that I no longer see his/her posts?

Yes, I know I can just not open his/her posts but I would rather not be tempted to reply to them!

Thank you

Click on the poster's name, "view public profile", "user lists", "add to ignore list".

I thought I had tried that weeks ago, yet I'm still seeing his/her posts.

Regardless, I shall give it a go and hope for the best :-)

Click on "user CP" and then "edit ignore list". You should see the posters that you are ignoring. If not, type in the user's name manually.

Just remember, even if they’re on your ignore list if someone quotes them you will still see their nonsense.

True.

But now you see NOTHING. A thread will show five posts but you only see four of these with no indication that there is a fifth. That is if a poster is on your Ignore List.

Thankfully I haven’t seen a post for a long time from the one poster I would strongly consider blocking : ) Last time I responded to one of his posts I spent a month in the penalty box : (

You also won't see threads started by them, nor will you see a complete page, if the first post on that page was from a blocked poster.

I know that seems a little odd, but that's the way it seems to work.

The poster is on my "Ignore List"

but his/her threads are still showing in "Today's Posts"

yet if I click on one it says "This thread is hidden as the poster is on your ignore list"

So I still see the threads, but can't read them. Since just seeing them is the annoying aspect I might as well take him/her off my ignore list.

Anyway, thank you all for your help

Strictly a guess here, but could it be the person who calls us "weenies" because some of us believe there is global warming?

Understand totally! Sometimes there's a negative gut reaction when you see a rude, sarcastic or supposedly funny response, so to avoid that response could mean avoiding that name in the future. Sorry that there isn't a perfect answer, as is so much of life.

My thought exactly. Are some people so insecure in their viewpoints that anything said or written to the contrary elicits a negative emotion so strong that they need to assure that they never have to see (hear, read) it? I personally enjoy reading points of view that do not line up with mine. Sometimes, I even learn a thing or two thereby.

There are times when I read something and get annoyed or angry. Before reacting, I reread it without placing an emotion into any of the words. Kinda like I am just chatting with a friend on the front porch.

Everyone has knowledge. Sometimes, it is knowledge you do not want to hear. Happened to me once on this forum. The guy rightfully called me out. Now, I just try to read and absorb. I don't know everything and will make mistakes. I feel the same for everyone on this forum. But! When someone has extensive knowledge on an issue, I am extremely grateful. Saves me lots of headaches. Wouldn't eliminate any poster for this reason.

So, simple question. Did you have a former life on TOTV with a different name?

Your points, and those of others before you, Margaret, are very valid.

Just occasionally, however, there is someone who consistently posts misinformed and ludicrous rubbish, and does so on an almost daily basis.

I know by now that anything that person has to say is not worth reading so, had I been able to "hide" that person's posts (rather then just be blocked from reading them), I would happily have done so, and could then have pretended that they had left TOTV in order to annoy others elsewhere.

Then I would be even more smiley.

No. New to the forum. We have rented homes here in the Villages starting in early 2000. When we turned 55 and mortgage rates were extremely low, it was much cheaper then renting so we bought a CYV. We never had any need for this type of forum. Life was simple then. Especially when renting, nothing in the homes were our problem, just had to pay rent and utilities. Lived very much an easy, breezy, lifestyle.

With everything changing, i.e. growth of the villages, insurance changes, inflation, and more, I just decided to reach out and learn how others are adjusting. Especially since we are contemplating moving. Just wanna know what we will be getting ourselves into before making that jump. We didn't do this when we purchased or CYV. In retrospect, we should have.

Judging from the number of threads in which half of the posts are complaining about how boring the subject matter is and that it has been covered hundreds of times, I would say "Yes".

I agree that too many times that is very true. Making a review of the top 6 current threads with more than 50 replies in "General Discussion" and "Non Villages Discussion" I noted the following: 19 of 70 replies (28%) were by 3 people; 21 of 52 (41%) by 2 persons; 28 of 76 (37%) by 3 people; 28 of 61 (46%) by 3 people; 73 of 177 (42%) by 6 people; and 14 of 58 (25%) by 2 persons. I have found that usually the informational value of a thread is quickly diluted by a high proportion of repeating posters.

Keep in mind this is a discussion forum, not a "one comment" forum. When there is an actual discussion going on, rather than pointless random comments, posters will be going back and forth to continue the discussion. Now if someone just keeps repeating the same thing over and over, well, that is just annoying. Almost as annoying as the pointless random comments.

Thank you

I have some folks blocked and what I see is a much more compassionate talk of the villages. Much more pleasant to read.

Now what I might have missed from doing blocking is that somebody responded to your request. Otherwise, from what I saw was nobody gave you a detailed step by step response to your question

I don't know the answer to your question either but you can search all forums on blocking users and you will surely find the answer yourself.

Good luck
