View Full Version : Unwanted Daily Sun delivered

I currently watch a neighbors home for the summer. A few weeks ago, the Daily Sun started to be delivered. I sent emails to the circulation department and stopped in their Spanish Springs office to stop the paper to no avail. This apparently happens often where they just start sending a free subscription. Papers can pile up causing concern for the Villages Watch and let bad guys know folks are away. Should not be allowed...simply a way to show a larger subscription base.

Call to cancel. Paper stopped immediately
The question is why do folks, including those not home for months, get papers delivered they did not request. Dangerous for their property and most likely they are unaware of the situation

It’s a promotional paper the resident did not request. Appears without notice. That should never happen without affirmative consent

I was offered a free paper for 6 months, but I had to call to get it started. Now I am considering cancelling because I never read it.

My neighbor's been getting the paper delivered to her house daily for the past week. The home is unoccupied at the moment. I, not being the homeowner or legally designated person, can't call to have her paper held up til she gets back. You can't just call a company and tell them to stop doing something for someone else's property. Believe me if that was legal I'd be calling the handyman and tell him to stop coming to build and paint at my other neighbor's house - because he keeps leaving a mess. But it's not my property, I'm not the one who hired him for the job, and I don't have the authority to tell him to stop.
If the delivery of the paper continues this week I'll call my neighbor and let her know, and SHE can call to cancel if she wants. In the meantime, we're just tossing the paper under her carport by her doorstep. She'll be down here in a month, so she'll have plenty of reading materials when she gets here.

Out of the blue, I started receiving the DS with a note that they were giving it to me for six months. After a couple of weeks of throwing it away in the trash, I finally called them and told them that I did not want it. They immediately stopped delivering it. I don't see the problem.

It's not only the Sun.
I want to stop all paper deliveries left on my driveway.
Once a month I drive over the Village Newspaper, what do I have to do to stop this?
Maybe if I leave my wastepaper in front of their door, they'll get the message.

The problem is that I am not the homeowner, just someone who unofficially watches their home and I don't have a contact number for them.

All you have to do is call 352-753-1119 which is the Daily Sun. Tell them the neighbors house is vacant and the papers are piling up. They will stop the paper. Someone else mentioned other papers that are thrown on the driveway. The only other one I know that is delivered is the POA. If you actually open the POA Newspaper, it has a way to opt out of delivery.

Why don't you have a contact number for them? What if there is a leak in the home? Why bother even "watching" the home if you have no way to contact the owner in case of a problem?

You will be telling a stranger on the phone that a home is vacant. Not a good idea.

Interesting that you are watching someone’s home but have no contact information for them. Should probably have their permission before doing anything regarding their house. As far as the paper is concerned I doubt the paper would allow someone to control their neighbor’s delivery. Community watch says to never pick up a neighbors paper cause when the papers pile up they know to check on the owner to be sure they are okay. Maybe they also can call the owner if not in town to let them know. Try calling Community Watch to see if they’ll take care of it.

Community Watch should have the owner's phone number.

I was told here I was stealing when they were sending the paper to my house. I never asked for the paper and told the delivery girl I don't want the papers but they kept coming.
What I first suspected was true it was an advertising company delivering the paper.
After a couple of calls to Daily Sun and finding the right person who had contact information for the advertisement company the papers finally stopped.
Maybe I need to put a no soliciting sign in the front of my house.

Here is a thought. Call the Customer Service Desk. Ask them to contact the home owner and give them your number with a request to give you a call.

Twice, (one time I forgot to put the paper on hold, one time I put the paper on hold but the paper was still delivered) when our paper was being delivered when we were out of town, we received a call from Community Watch that there were newspapers in our driveway. Perhaps putting the papers in the carport isn't as helpful as intended as Community Watch can't see what is going on.
I do think a call to the circulation department would also fix the problem.

Because the poster is referring to someone else's delivery, not their own. The poster can't cancel someone else's subscription. And - people who aren't in the Villages when the free six-month gift subscription starts up, don't know they're getting the paper at their driveway every day until they a) get back to the Villages or b) someone who lives in their neighborhood and has their phone number calls to let them know.
It is a safety risk, having papers piled up on a driveway. It is a big huge graphic symbol that says, "no one is home. Please rob this house."

So that's how easy it is to prank someone you don't get along with? Call the paper and tell them the neighbor you don't like that the house is vacant?
I really really hope that this isn't all there is to stopping someone else's subscription.

You seem to be in the same boat I am in. I have called circulation four times requesting that the free paper be stopped at my neighbor’s address. I end up with a trash bag full of wet papers and it is very frustrating. Despite calling again yesterday I suspect it will be in their driveway this morning. I will not leave it there as neighbors are supposed to help each other. Besides, it screams that no one is living at that house. I suspect I will be calling again today. Incidentally, I was told that the free paper is being paid for by an advertising company.

I called The Village Sun about papers being delivered which owners do not request. I was worried because I don't have neighbors who can watch. Good news and bad. Bad: They can't communicate with delivery people (who are contracted through another company) to tell them never to do this at your address. Good: According to The Village Sun, Community Watch comes around, they said daily. If Community Watch notices two or more papers piled up at your house they pick them up (perhaps after the call?) and call Village Sun to ask what is happening. If you are not subscribed, and they are collecting in your driveway, delivery will stop.

As I expected, the paper has been delivered once again despite four calls to stop it. I just texted the owner and asked them to call. I will see what tomorrow brings or doesn’t bring.

Today marks the 5th day I have called to have a neighbor’s paper stopped. Someone wrote that the owner must call so I have texted them. Incidentally, when I called this morning I asked if it had to be the owner and is that why it hadn’t been stopped. The gentleman I spoke to said it does NOT have to be the owner. And so you have it.

I have had these “free” Village Sun subscriptions appear on my driveway twice in the last year. Both times, I called the newspaper to have delivery stopped. And delivery promptly stopped. But I don’t like the idea of anyone dumping anything on my property without my permission. As far as I am concerned, The Village Sun is rubbish

I had no problem stopping the free subscription for 2 neighbors.
Took one phone call.

I watch houses for neighbors. Have keys for their home and mailbox. Garage door codes. Their phone numbers and emails. Travel info with contact info for places they are going. Their relatives also have my contact info in case something happens to them.

On my street everyone’s contact numbers and emergency numbers are put into a directory which is sold for a few dollars to everyone on the street. Anyone who wants out is not included, as far as I know no one has NOT wanted to be included. Each year this directory is updated we even know where the neighbors have moved if they tell us. I can’t tell you how often we have used this directory for various reasons over the years.

They only asked for address. Paper stopped next day.
If they they don’t stop call Morgan and Morgan. Smells like a class action lawsuit. Document contact and results in writing

This happened to me while I was away in late June also. It turns out it was a promotional free paper for a few weeks. I don't subscribe to the Daily Sun. My neighbor noticed & picked up the papers for me. The papers were not delivered with the regular subscription deliveries in the early morning, they came much later around 10 am. I doubt any of the advice to stop the subscription to the Daily Sun would work, since these were delivered purposely to non-subscribers. I agree with you, it is a very poor practice. I had lots of wet papers to discard when I got back & it does scream 'empty house'.
