We're new residents. We used the Free App to go from DeLuna to Sawgrass and back last night. Good thing we happened to remember the way to get back, because the app kept giving opposite instructions.
"Turn left" when there was no left, etc. Also, when we got onto the path when we left Sawgrass we were 100 feet along and it said, "Make a U-Turn", so we did. Then 100 feet into going the opposite way it said again, "Make a U-turn" so we turned around again. Then it said it a 3rd time so we ignored it.
So eventually it started to give the correct instructions but then stopped talking for several miles. When it did start talking again it was giving us incorrect instructions. It would tell us to take a turn where there was no turn to take, or "Take a right" when we knew it was a left. etc., etc. BTW we followed our memory turn by turn and got back without trouble.
So. Is this a common issue? I don't want to go exploring if this thing won't know how to get me home and I don't remember the route.
Thanks!

I’m not sure what the Free app means but the villages app ( with the green V) is what I use and have never had any issues. I use it all the time.

If you are going by CAR google maps is fine if you are going by golf cart it does not work and will direct you on to roads you are not allowed to be on with a golf cart.
Now to clarify, on my Android phone, the FREE villages app, is a green background and a big WHITE V. I have not seen the problems being described, but every once in a while, it will take me beyond my destination and then have me make a U turn to get there.

Don't get carried away. If it's like Apple Maps, it has Bicycle directions.
Personally, I think Google Mapping is the worst of all the mainstream mapping programs. That said, the Villages GPS is awful. I pay for it, but use it with extreme caution. The reviews are horrendous.

Haven't used the app lately but never had problems in the past.
Note: I use The Villages App with the white V which is not the same as the Village GPS app

Be careful..............Apple & Google does not know all the paths/tunnels...........it will put you on Buena Vista as an example.

Just a thought, but did you end your trip to sawgrass? Sounds like the app was trying to take you back there.

Seems to be some confusion about the 'Villages GPS' app-If you are referencing the 'White V' on a green background icon called 'The Villages App'-that's the 'free' one-If you are talking about the 'Blue Compass' icon, whose actual name in your App Store is 'Villages GPS'-I believe that one cost me $5.99 and I thought was administered through TOTV here.
I'd highly recommend spending the $6 and using the 'Compass' icon program-it's never let me down.

It sounds like it was programmed to go from rather than to where you wanted to go. I’ve made that mistake, maybe you didn’t.

The Villages GPS app does at time get appear to get "confused". We have seen the same behavior when using it. Eventually it gets back on track. I am thinking it is probably the phones GPS giving bad info. Does not happen to everyone but I do have friends that have also had the issue.

I've had it get "stuck" a couple of times.
Next time, try shutting down the app and restarting it.
Coldboot the phone if that doesn't work.

Weather can affect GPS apps because they use satellites.
Google Maps doesn't give golf cart directions but the golf cart paths are visible as they’re green skinny roads, you can tell when it’s going under a road.
It's good for pre-planning a trip but as mentioned it may put you onto forbidden roads.

The Villages (green background) app is quirky at times. Like, heading from the softball fields to get under Buena Vista, it always tells me to make a U turn. Another annoying characteristic is the way it announces the next turn. It may be so far ahead that it appears that there is a mistake in the route. Might be worse in the newer sections.

Google maps in bicycle mode works most of the time. The Villages app works also most of the time.

If there is software and humans involved, there is always the potential to get confused or to have occasional issues. .
The key is to stop using the GPS if you know your way. . only use GPS if you [b]don't] know your way, or need traffic conditions. . your brain will thank you later in life.

I go real old school and use a photo of a hard copy map at https://www.talkofthevillages.com/forums/images/maps/The-Villages-Golf-Cart-Path-Map.pdf
It shows where the tunnels are and on which side of of the street the paths are located if not on both sides. I still find that some tunnels for instance can only be entered from one direction so sometimes I have to pass the tunnel entrance and then do a U-turn back to the tunnel.

We too, use the paid version and have never had a problem.
Make sure your phone is updated to the latest version of software.

Ditch the free app and spend the money for the Villages GPS app. Works better than any of the others including Google Maps. The app is rated 4.4 out of 5. The app does have some issues but for the most part it gets you where you need to go by golf cart. I found with both apps you better off not listening to the voice directions and just follow the blue line on the map as you travel. Get your self a phone holder for the golf cart so you can get it out or your hands and you can just glance at the screen. Cost of the app is nominal and they update it on a regular basis as they find glitches. The app also has all the golf courses, Rec Centers, Pools, Town Squares, and more already programed in. Once you start using it on a regular basis you’ll get used to how it works. Don’t use the apps for you car, they wont sync into your car screen or audio. Use only for golf cart directions. Hope that helps.

I live in Deluna and did a route map going to the brownwood hotel by bicycle. It took me over the WaterLily bridge through the parking lot at Brownwood and then straight out through the circle on Powell Road. Golf carts cannot go that way but bicycles can so that’s why you shouldn’t use Maps or Google maps when you’re going by golfcart.

Pay the 6 bucks for the village gps with the green compass background. The free one doesn’t have all the info the paid one has. You get what you pay for.

Yes, I’ve had problems with the app. It’s quirky and until you are more familiar with how it works it can get you into trouble. For the problems you experienced, long delay without any instructions, quit the app and start it up again reentering the navigation info. The same with the multiple u turns.

Regardless of which app has, the bad for you to take the shortcut is always wrong, including the normal gos. The carts pass my home in Rio Grand en route to Spanish Springs. Now an Increaae of 6 vehicles every minute all day. They bypass the normal streets. I don't like this outcome at all at my home that was never that way.

Have used the free Villages app (green background with white V) for 6 years. Very rarely have issues with it. Amazes me that people insist that free apps are never any good! I download free podcasts all the time that are excellent. Why should I pay for something when there are perfectly good substitutes for free?
