Windshield cleaning?

I use Windex without ammonia with a mirco-cloth. We use the same thing on our laminate flooring.

I'm thinking the salesman at VGC store told us to use Pledge. I'll have to double check. Also to use a VEERRRYYY soft cloth, something like the oldest most worn out T-shirt you have.

Don't use a paper towel!!!

There's also a product called Plexus that's for plastics, acrylic, Lexan, etc. You can generally find it at places that cater to motorcycles or boats - perhaps other places as well including online. It's not inexpensive but it's good stuff.

Another suggestion: If your windshield is really dirty, it would be best to wash it first then use a plastic cleaner to finish it up. JMHO..... :)

We always us white vinegar and water to clean windows, windshields etc. Other products leave residue and will show streaks as well. Just my humble opinion. Oh...and newspapers to polish will leave it all spiffy!!!

I use the cleaner/polish they make for airplane windshields. You can buy it at any small airport. It is made specifically to cause any rain to run off and not bead up. So any water or rain will leave you with a very clear windshield. It is made for plastic type windshields.

We've been successful with pledge and microfiber cloth. That was the recommendation from TV Golf Carts when we bought ours.

Timely thread, thanks. I was in the process of ordering a new windshield for my Club Car as the previous owners scratched it. The scratches are circular which tells me it happened during cleaning, maybe a rough cloth, who knows..... The scratches make it very tough for night driving.

I will first try one of these polishes.....

Our windshield on the Club Car had some circular scratches. Had to be from the previous owner using something abrasive when cleaning. After reading this post and Googling, my wife picked up some Meguiar's PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner and Polish at Wal-Mart for me.

I just did a spot by rubbing it in, then wiping off with an old 100% cotton tee shirt. The spot looked better, but still had scratches. I tried again, but this time applied a bit more elbow grease. This is great shoulder workout and the windshield looks 98% better.

Thanks for this reference, if it works well on the whole windshield, you may have saved me $90 for a new windshield

aj - Good deal! Glad it seems to be working for you. Sometimes the scratches can be so bad that NOTHING will take them out. If they're just light ones on the surface, then it should do well.

Meguiar's (as well as other companies) market products that are just intended for general cleaning/upkeep/protection of plastic. I wouldn't suggest using the PlastX for anything other than scratch removal.

Again, hope the rest of the windshield turns out great! :)

When we bought our carts, we were told to be sure and use CLEAN cloths that have absolutely no dirt on them. Otherwise, you scratch the windshield.

Nope, I didn't invent it but used it all the time , Its called ALLKLEER , comes in a squeeze bottle and works great....
I'm sure leesburg airport has it ..............Let you in on a little secret , apply a coat to the front of your car , works great for love bugs.....

We were told to Use only WINDEX AUTO GLASS. It cost a little more but it is what everyone at the Golf Cart Stores recommended. We have used it with no problems..

I wax the windshield after I wash it with soap & water.It helps with the raindrops beading up along with a clear view!!

Thanks, AJ. Just ordered 2 bottles and a pkg of lint-free towels. Had rave reviews from 2 pilots and a golf cart owner. Hope it takes my scratches out. All I used was water from a spray bottle followed by a microfiber towel and it scratched like crazy :rant-rave:

Rain-x warns not to use on plastic. I've bought several windshields over the years for motorcycles and most manufactures recommend to clean in only one direction, either horizontal or vertical. That way any scratches will be in the same direction, not a swirl which causes light to scatter and make visibility worse especially at night looking at other lights.
Also, never, never use the cleaning sponge at a gas station which usually will have other peoples grit from their dirty windshields embedded in it. I clean mine with an ammonia free glass cleaner and wax it with a car wax.

Got my All Kleer the other day along with lint-free towels. Squirted it on the windshield, used a towel to wipe it on, let it dry to a glaze then wiped it off with another towel. NO MORE SCRATCHES :thumbup: Later, I had to run an errand in the cart and when I turned West the windshield looked brand new again.
