I need some help. A very close friend of mine is having a major birthday soon and we need a cake for the party. Her favorite is an plain, original, heavy, old-fashioned N. Y. cheesecake. She's a real aficionado so this has to be GOOD! I understand there is a bakery in Wildwood that is supposed to be very good but I've forgotten the name and I don't know if they make really good cheesecake.

If you have any suggestions, please post so I can check them out. Thanks a lot.

Athens NY in Spanish Springs had a mighty fine looking batch of goodies in their case. I didn't try the awesome looking cheesecake but that cannolli that slipped my way was yummers. You might ask to get a sampling at Fresh Market. I made the mistake of trying some of their baked goods and my only complaint is that I want more!

I second that motion ! The Cotillion is THE BEST cakes around here ! My sister was a pastry chef at an inn on Nantucket and her cakes were great, but Cotillion are excellent ! :icon_hungry:

Having grown up in Brooklyn and attended Unversity across the street from Juniors I can attest to the fact that they have the definitive NY cheesecake.

I haven't seen Eli's anywhere. I had it shipped to us many times when we lived in CA. One trip to visit our son in Chicago also included a trip to the Eli factory. Ah, I was in cheesecake heaven! They ship very quickly... ;)

Find someone driving straight through from Long Island and have them stop at Milleridge Inn. That was my favorite cheesecake.

Thanks for your responses. I just looked over the website for Eli's as mentioned and, guess what? The section that shows where it is available indicates that it's at Publix....all of our local Publix stores are listed.
Going to hop into the cart and go over there right now!!! What a way to make a midwest girl happy!!!

Gracie:
I stumbled across the cheesecake thread as I was going to suggest that you attempt an Italian cheesecake......or other type to top off the light lemon chicken piccata dinner..........

Again, there are many versions of cheesecake; I actually prefer the cream cheese and sour cream version over the Italian ricotta version.........
A cheesecake pan where the bottom comes out is best to use.

However, here is a SUPER EASY one that even my grandchildren can make. It freezes well, so you can make FOUR muffin tins of them if you are in the mood........then freeze and put in ziplock bags to take out one tiny miniature cheesecake when the mood strikes........or you want bite sized desserts at your next party or barbecue............

This is a recipe for just 12 mini cheesecakes....one muffin tin. I've always used the "foil muffin cup liners" but I guess you can use the paper ones as well.
You can alternate and top some with blueberry pie filling, strawberry pie filling or any type you prefer........or just use fresh berries on top. Super easy and delish.

MINI CHEESECAKES

12 vanilla wafers
2 (8 oz.) pkgs. cream cheese
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
1 sm. tin foil muffin liners
Cherry pie filling or fresh strawberries

Mix softened cream cheese, vanilla, sugar and eggs on "medium" until there are no lumps. Put wafers in bottom of muffin liners (in muffin tin). Pour mixture over wafers, filling liners 2/3 full. Bake for 25 minutes at 325 degrees. Remove from pan. Chill and top with pie filling or fresh fruit.
THEY FREEZE VERY VERY WELL.....
OR, CAN BE MADE AHEAD & REFRIGERATED.

the mention of italian cheesecake brought back wonderful memories of my sicilian favorite, cassata, made with ricotta and sponge cake laced with rum, a few chocolate chips sprinkled here and there...heaven!! doubt if it can be found anywhere around here, though...just as well for our waistlines!

I second Juniors in NYC. We have ordered their cheesecakes on several occasions and they are the best. Pricey but worth every penny. I most recently ordered one for this past Christmas and sent it to a relatives who's house we would be spending the holidays, so she could try it. People raved about it. Easy to do, just go on Google and look up Juniors in NYC, there are about three locations. Enjoy!

Oh...cassata! Not since I left Queens, NY - or my mom's house (she makes a dyamite cassata, even at age 91!)

You are certainly fortunate to still have an Italian mom.

Scroll around this hyperlink above.............

We ordered one of their cassata's last Christmas; it's shipped overnight with dry ice and was delicious.

A little pricey.......but worth it. The ingredients can also get pricey, to make at home.

Their chocolate dipped canoli are also great, whether the miniature ones or the large sized ones......always a hit.

Their Italian cookie platters........ditto. My Italian grandmother used to live around the corner from this bakery......from 1890 to 1965. They are still going strong.

Excellent customer service if you have any questions.

Just scroll around for all the goodies..........

Their panatone bread, which is a tall yeast bread like a Polish babka, is also good.......and their Easter bread which is a ring with the hard boiled eggs baked in the braid......which I remember my grandmother baking.....but she always got her "pastries" from the bakery. She passed at 95. Obviously did not eat the stuff daily.........just on holidays.

Also love their anisette and other flavor BISCOTTI...........we get that at Christmas also..........

You might even consider baking the cheesecake yourself. A cheesecake is really one of the easiest of baked goods to do yourself, lots of recipes on the internet.

Another vote for Juniors in NYC! We have had the chocolate cake, vanilla cake and a Christmas vanilla cheesecake from there and it is awesome. Look it up on Google. There are about three locations to pick from.
