These are just 47 photos selected by The Big Picture at boston.com from the thousands of this years National Geographic photo contest. Some are simply remarkable.

Do not skip the captions as some provide an insight to what the photographer was experiencing.

Many times I've said, it is a small world. Looking at these photos reminds me our world really is vast and phenomenal. Thanks for taking the time to share this.

The pictures are beautiful, but National Geographic should be ashamed of itself for they way it runs the contest.

To enter the contest, you have to agree to give all rights to your work to National Geographic, whether you win or not. That is shameful, to take somebody's creative work and not pay for it under the guise of a contest. National Geographic is not the only national organization that does this.

That means, of course, if your picture does not win, you don't own it any longer, and you can't even make a print of it for your wall.

Not being a "photographer" I had never actually read the fine print. You peaked my interest so I looked around for some details. Looks to me that by entering many contests, you grant rights to use the entered photos (even modify) for free to the entity running the contest, but from what I have seen it seems you still own the work.

Here is one link on the subject and the NG rules:
