We moved into DeLuna 3 weeks ago. Both car GPS programs- Waze and Google Maps refuse to route us through any villages to our destination. In every instance they take us around The Villages- 301 to 466, etc, then into the final village if that is our destination. One day it sent us 15 miles to get to a place we later figured out was only 2 miles away- through The Villages.
Today we were on 466A and wanted to go to the Village of McClure- we had no idea how to get there. It took us to 301, then Warm Springs, then to McClure. We noticed at the round-about that we could have gone down Marsh Bend Trail- through DeLuna instead of around. It has NEVER taken us through The Villages to get to our destination. My wife thinks the Apps are avoiding gates because not everyone has gate cards.
Any way- has anyone heard of this? Is there a setting to fix this?
Thanks!

The solution is to learn the roads in TV to relieve yourself of GPS reliance.
The best way to do this is to get the directions from Google maps, write them down and then drive it looking at landmarks. . humans use landmarks for mental navigation. or just follow signs and see where they lead you!
you will feel more comfortable and keep your eyes on the road longer, and help your brain health keeping it in learning mode. . .
not the answer you were probably expecting, but the better long term answer

Are these apps loaded into your car or are you using them from your phone? If they are in your car then it is possible they have not been updated with the latest map information. If there is a way to update your maps, that might help.
Even google maps or Waze on the phone may not have all the roads in the new neighborhood yet. If that is the case then it will just take time.
I suggest downloading the free Villages apps and use the directions from that until google/Waze maps are working for you. If you have an iPhonea and CarPlay then it will be almost as convenient as your in-car system.

I think Sportsguy gives good advice. Using his instructions you would also learn which lane to be in as your approach a roundabout. That would help the other drivers stay calm.

Try setting your route setting to "shortest" rather than "fastest".

The roads of Deluna have been on google maps for the last year ; Both Android and I Phone. I’d imagine your issue is with your cars built in maps software. I’d recommend googling it to see if you can update it yourself… Or you might have to take it to the dealer for an update…..or read the owners manual.

The dealer will likely charge an arm and a leg and it will immediately be obsolete due to rapid construction here. Use the free Villages app. I’ve not had a problem using Waze or Google maps on my phone for driving in TV.

I use the Villages (free) app, Green background big white V, this offers both CAR and Golf cart directions, it has voice readout, and in general has been very accurate. I have no idea if you can download to your car, but with a suitable phone holder it works very well.

Google maps and Waze have become better south of 44. I nagged them incessantly. Still too much of the area shows as dirt. Much work still to be done

They must be updating the areas now. We are in Amelia (just NORTH of 466A) and about 2 weeks ago around 8AM a Google Earth truck was scanning the neighborhood. Maybe they'll get down south before the end of the millennia.

One of the biggest problems with apps like Apple, Google and Waze is they tend to route you around the gates that are in the Villages, assuming that we are a "gated" community. For example, going up Morse Blvd to 441, they will all take you over 466a or 466 to get to Rolling Acres road.

Common problem if you haven't had your car GPS maps updated recently so that it recognizes the new streets in the area.

That’s strange . I have a 2018’with car play and use the map that came on my apple phone and I can type it any Rec center or business in villages and it takes me right to it . I suspect maybe it’s a setting . My dealer is pretty nice and will help me with something like a setting issue when I ask the service writer . Not sure what’s wrong , but yiu should have that capability so I would call the local dealer and ask for service as a starting point. I know it’s frustrating . Good luck

A couple of suggestions. First, make sure your device settings are correct for things like shortest distance, etc. Second, The maps in your device must be updated periodically. That does not happen automatically and often requires a payment. This is important for TV because new streets and locations are added almost daily.

Exactly. Will correct itself once you get PAST the gate. Until then it ignores the gated road.

Since you are new here, don't forget to attend the new resident night and the golf cart safety clinic. Both are free and both are given every month. Also, Village Community Development Districts (http://www.districtgov.org) is for all information related to the villages. You should get used to using it.

I use the maps on my iPhone and it always seems to work the best when I’m in my car. If I’m in the golf cart I use the villages app and make sure I choose golf cart option when putting in the address. I’ve never had the problem you described but it sounds like it’s in your settings.

Use the Villages GPS instead. Otherwise check your settings. If there is a setting to avoid private roads - turn that off. ALso if you know the direction you want just keep going that way the GPS will give up telling you to turn around and get you there.

that is COMPLETELY incorrect. I have never been routed around anything with Waze. it's your settings that is doing it. Waze has no idea who has gates, that's totally ridiculous

I live in Deluna near 301. Sitting at my house I put directions to Lowe’s on 466a in both Waze and Maps. Waze had me go out marsh Bend Trail to the light at 301 and make a left go down to warm Springs and then back up to Meggison to Powell to 466A. It said it was 13 miles. Maps, however had me go out to the light make a right turn, go up to 466A and Lowes is 6 miles away so maybe the issue is Waze isn’t up-to-date? Because those directions make absolutely no sense whatsoever.
If I ever want to go down to McClure, I would go out to the light make a left and go to warm Springs. I would not go down marsh Bend Trail even though it’s a shorter distance it’s much slower because of the speed limit.

I had a similar problem of my GPS avoiding gates. Once I found shortcuts through the Villages I wet those routes with my Google maps on and ignoring the directions a few times. It will get a little annoying since you will that voice telling you to turn around. Explore with it on and it will to learn youcan use those gates. Hop this helps.
Mine is pretty good now even in the new areas

Correct. Your GPS doesn’t understand the concept of private gates where you need a card or need to press the red button. It shows the streets if you go there, but it won’t route you there. At least mine doesn’t. It sends me around to gates with attendants. But if you know where you are going, use the gates you want, and your GPS will catch up in a few seconds. I don’t think my GPS has ever kept me from getting somewhere, but it has unnecessarily lengthened the journey. A couple days ago, driving back from Ocala on I-74 to highway 44 and then home, I went the way I wanted instead of the way my GPS wanted me to go and saved six minutes!

Choose “directions” rather than “start”, when the map appears it will have all the streets and you can make your own route.

We had the same problem for a couple of years. Google and Garmin take a while to catch up to The Villages new streets. We are also near the Turnpike occasionally, and Garmin thinks we are on it. Directions are .. interesting. Yes, definitely get a paper map or follow The Villages App on your phone until other maps catch up.

Give it some time. This is a common problem with new homes and apartments. I had a brand new condo in NJ and it took 3 years before my address appeared on any gps. When I moved to TV almost 6 years ago it was a new development and I had the same situation. Fortunately it did get on gps pretty quickly. Hopefully it will be the same for you.

It amazes me how many people don't read the OP.
I use WAZE extensively in and around The Villages. It almost never takes me out of my way and never 'around' The Villages unless that is the best route. There is no setting in WAZE for Shortest Time vs Shortest Route.
Waze uses the average road segment speed for the time slot that applies at the time when a user is expected to arrive at that road segment. Because of this time window, Waze suggests different routes at different times of day. This is dependent on how many times are recorded on the roads along the route.

I didn't think about that when I mentioned it earlier. Not everything is available on CarPlay (I wish it was) and the Villages app appears to be one of those things.
One of the routes the OP mentioned was from 466A to McClure. I just mapped that on the desktop version of google maps and it also recommended 301 to Warm Springs. Since you can force the desktop version to take a route of your choosing I told it to take Marsh Bend like the OP suggested. Google maps told me that would take five additional minutes. It appears that in this case it was recommending the fastest route.
The OP also mentioned a 15 mile trip to a location that was only two miles away. I'd like to know what those endpoints were so we could look at them on google maps as well. It still could be a case of the maps not being up to date but it would be interesting to check it out.

Welcome to DeLuna! We’ve been here 8 months and have the same issue. It’s actually much faster to go to McClure or Fenney or any of the southern newer villages via 301 to Warm Springs, etc. The route down Marsh Bend Trail to Warm Springs is very slow because of the curvy road, though it’s definitely more scenic, and I personally prefer it.
If you’re wanting to go to a northern location of TV avoiding 301 then the easiest way for now is to take Marsh Bend Trail to Warm Springs, turn left, then left again on Meggison, and then once on Meggison enter the address or destination in your GPS and it should route you through the Villages. It’s a longer route, but keeps you in TV. My husband always prefers the quickest and most direct route to any TV location, which is usually via 301, but sometimes I just want to stay in the bubble and enjoy the scenery. The routes and alternative routes throughout TV will become second nature to you very quickly. Hopefully GPS will give these non-301 routes as an option eventually. Our car is pre-navigation system so my husband uses Google Maps on his iPhone, and I think it’s giving him more than one route when he enters the destination.
If you’re on Facebook we have a Village of DeLuna group that will be very helpful to you as newbies.

The program may be optimizing for fastest route.
You may try going old school. Get a Villages Map. Cost about $5 at the villages merchandise stores or maybe your real estate agent will give you one.

Thanks!
This problem has existed for years because of our faux gates. I just memorized one-half dozen of the major roads in TV, check Google Maps for the location I wish to go, head in the general direction of my target, and maybe use the GPS for the last couple of blocks. Once you are close to your destination, provided there are not a lot more gates, you will usually get an accurate route.

The gates have nothing to do with it...
I'm still using the (pay Villages GPS App almost daily when I'm there.
Once in a blue moon, it gets stuck in a loop (most likely due to a bad cell connection). But 99% of the time, no problems...

I've never had a gate identified on any of my auto map programs in my travels…

In the example given in your second paragraph the app simply took you on the shortest and fastest route. From the intersection of Marsh Bend Trl and 301 to the roundabout @ Warm Springs and Fenney Way it is 3.66 miles with speed limits of 55 and 45 MPH if you travel 301 to Warm Springs. If you travel Marsh Bend Trl instead it is 4.5 miles with speed limits of 30 or 35 MPH.

I'm a home inspector here in The Villages. I use Waze. I have inspected homes built in 2022 on brand new roads and not once has it routed me around Hogan's barn.
I live north of 466 near Tiera Del Sol, so some of those homes in Deluna were pastures not that long ago yet It gets me there no fuss no muss. It doesn't route me out to 75 or 301 or whatever. Just straight to the point usually down Morse or BV unless there's a jam up somewhere.

I remember my first week trying to use a GPS. I had never used one before, and was resistant because (at the time) I didn't have hearing aids and trying to listen to voices on my cell phone speaker while I'm trying to drive is a HUGE distraction to me.
I got lost in the parking lot over the 441 golf cart bridge one night, looking for a particular restaurant that was outside of the Spanish Spring town square. And the thing said "head north on [insert road here]." I just slumped over and started crying. If I knew which way was north, I wouldn't have been lost.
Eventually I was able to get back on track but boy was that a harrowing experience.

Common problem if you haven't had your car GPS maps updated recently so that it recognizes the new streets in the area.
I just had ours updated at the Honda dealer, no charge.
