We love our home of several yrs and one thing we would like to change/add is a buffer out in our back yard to gain a little privacy from our neighbors. I'm sure they may feel same way. I'm interested in learning of ways you have achieved added privacy to your lanai area and any pics would be great to see. Enclosing our lanai is not what we want to do. Thank you

We had the same desire to add a little privacy to the back of our house. We already had a plantings but just low ones. We added two robellini palm tress (you can see everywhere in TV). We got ones that were about 8 feet high and had 3 trunks so once put in the ground - instant privacy. Not cheap but very nice. We had Lawn and House Service LLC 252-470-5981 do the work at a very reasonable price compared to other estimates we received. We also added some other accent plants like foxtails. Very pleased as adds privacy but still allows light into the lanai.

Whatever you do will require approval. I've found the Villages Offices very helpful. I would call them and ask for suggestions. Your neighbor. I would talk to them. Far better to work together then later find out they don't like what was done.

Podocarpus shrubs. They fill in nicely but the downside is that they also block your view. They're used at the neighborhood pools and rec centers to hide pool equipment and fences.

Electric sun shades. They do not completely block the view, but I don't feel like I'm an honorary family member of the neighbors. I run them up in the morning but down in the afternoon/evening and when I'm out on the lanai.

Sugar palms will do the trick and do it fast, fertilize them 3 times per year, early spring, June, and September. They will give you privacy as well as being a bit of a sound barrier too.

Aren't we discussing a "kissing lanai"? Nothing wrong with blocking the view. Podocarpus is a lovely hedge......thick, lush a beautiful green.

Podocarpus. Very flexible. Cold hardy.

I’d recommend something other than the Podocarpus…..they’re everywhere, plain and do nothing for the environment. No flowers or nectar for the pollinators.

How about something flowering to help the wildlife ?

lattice panel / trellis (or 2) with a nice flowering vine.

Camelia Bush - lots of colors and either a fall or spring bloomer.

Any other flowering shrub. Go to your local nursery for recommendations.

Or for inside the lanai, if not too crowded, a planter or two with some nice tropical foliage.

If plants aren’t your thing, how about a 3 or 4 panel privacy screen inside the lanai?

Sell your kissing lanai house and buy one that has more privacy.

Podocarpus shrubs. Make sure not next to screen. Better to be closure to prprty line otherwise you won’t get breeze, will feel closed in, be dark, and have trouble trimming when get bigger and fuller. Look at labels and full width of plant and give yourself few feet from screen. Also, consider dark privacy screens (not pull down shades). for your lanai. Loved ours with the Podocarpus shrubs.

The good thing about my house is that I'm extending my lanai 9 ft out (with cage) and there isn't a lanai kissing problem because the house directly behind me only has a back wall and no reason that I can think of to knock it out for a lanai. Their cage is on the other side of their house. A premade fence or wall would've been nice to separate the rows of houses for more privacy, but my village doesn't have that on my street.

we kept it small rather than hog the yard with bushes or palm trees. Use a trellis, this give separation. if it's noise I'd recommend a cannon, not too big not too small LOL. but seriously trellis and vines/flowers give you something colorful to look at also.

In addition, it depends on CDD if you really need permission. We didn't

Verbinum hedge is a natural mosquito repellent and gets very thick and tall in 6 months. Do not buy large ones and plant them about 1 1/2 feet apart I planted the near the property line

For some reason Podocarpus would not grow in our backyard. So we did Bottle Brush Bushes. They grow fast, have flowers that the humming birds like. They require some trimming but the stems are narrow and easy to do. There is a place on 42 where they sell them in 30 gal bucks for a cheep price.

We have a row of Podocarpus, ligustrum, and in the center a large weeping bottle brush tree that has lovely red blooms that the birds love. We let the weeping limbs hang to the ground which provides a curtain of privacy. It looks like a nature preserve with squirrels, rabbits and birds frequent visitors. You'd really never know that another house is beyond it. We put shepherd's hooks with red begonias in front of all this also. When we sit on our patio it is very private.

Get some retractable shades. I got motorized ones that work great.

Sell your kissing lanai house and buy one that has more privacy.
This is the only option, because while you can create some visual screen you can't prevent them from eavesdropping!

Speaking of Ligustrum.......are these the shrubs that leave brown stains on clothing? My gardening clothes have those stains and they are impossible to get out. Anyone know?

Podocarpus is the way to go, very hardy, grows fast and easy to trim. Below is a picture of ours on one side of our birdcage/pool. Another identical hedge is on the other side. No need for any on the back, we abut a wildlife preserve. The podocarpus hedges give us total visual privacy from the neighbors on either side.

We don’t have a kissing lanai but wanted some privacy on our bedroom side.
We had bottlebrush planted and they did the job.
When they bloom are really pretty.

I usually just walk around in my underwear, the neighbors put up blinds, so they don't have to watch.... We have some plantings but nothing mature enough to block a lot out. Remember with plantings, comes maintenance and critters...
