Oh wait, who's Lil Tay?
Since you don’t have a clue, commenting on the death of a child would be the last by “OH wait or Who’. Would not be my first thought.
It is so sad that such a young child in today’s spotlight has died of suspected abuse. I hope she is at peace.

Can someone please remind me how to NOT see a specific persons comments? Did it a while ago with Bogie but this gem ….. I’d rather not

"Suspected Abuse"?
You got that from the article citing a "Go Fund Me" page set up trying to make money after their "Influencer career" crashed and burned?
"Her controversial content, which often came littered with slurs, including the N-word, amassed Lil Tay over 3.3 million Instagram followers."
No comment on her dropping "N-Bombs" and other slurs all over the place?

For the life of me, I don’t think I will ever figure out exactly what a social influencer is or how in the world anyone could possibly be so stupid that they would be influenced by someone on social media?

Why don’t you check your sources out before you print fake news and who in their right mind would follow social influencers?

She is at peace. If she's dead she doesn't care. If she is not, she got lots and lots of the attention she was hoping to get.

In fairness, even media like the Los Angeles Times were posting stories about this. And the family would neither confirm nor deny immediately.

That's actually 2 different statements in the same sentence.
In fairness to the person who posted that, there appear to be conflicting stories, either by confusion or by design.
As far as "who would follow social influencers", all I can say is that Jedi mind tricks only work on the weak minded.

I'm not sure we know what the REAL news is yet.
Wait---here's the real news-----apparently 3.3 million idiots are stupid enough to "follow" a 14-year-old "social influencer". How weak do you have to be to be led by a 14-year-old? This is our next generation???? Future senators and governors and presidents????? We may very well be witnessing the beginning of the end. I very much doubt the citizens of Iran, or North Korea or China are being led by a 14-year-old "social influencer".

It was just "the news" at the time. I had no idea who that was so I looked it up. Nearly every result in the search mentioned the recent death. Nothing at the time hinted at a hoax.
I guess the "hoax" worked. I imagine most of us here had never heard of her. Now we're talking about her and her name is in the news. I wonder how long it will take her to announce her "I'm still alive" tour.

Well let's put it this way: Have you ever sought any how-to instructions on the internet? From cooking, to vehicle fixes, to exercises? You have? Me too! These are our influencers of today.
Rather than pay money to anyone outside of your monitor you get some free self-help fixits at your very own convenience. Imagine that. I do a great core workout from a fitness expert (ahem influencer). I cured my sometimes nagging rotator cuff injury into a never nagging one thanks to another expert. Why I even added freon to my car thanks to one of these online mechanics. Went from warm air to ice cold... right before summer hit.
The unfortunate side effect is along with these very helpful people online we also get some narcissistic, useless twits that come with the package. I'm with you on this... who watches this garbage? And why are some of them straight out lying? Sad thing is the internet loves to promote them more than the helpful... just for clicks! So we get them pushed in our faces while others who actually contribute to society are sometimes ignored.
The name "influencer" sounds new and silly, I know, but some of these vloggers are actually very helpful. I'm sure the kids who watched this lil girl felt the same, maybe confidence-wise, who knows. If you don't like 'em, then don't "like" 'em.
If she is gone then may she RIP. If not, then just consider online source "facts" to be questionable until verified. (by other online sources!)

I think you need to separate the how-to videos and blogs that help solve a problem with "social influencers" who just spout out crap. A you tube video of how to program your sprinkler system is a far cry from some 14-year-old twit shouting out the N-word.

Who knows---I never hear the term until this 14-year-old idiot made the news. But you're right, a lot of crap comes along with the benefits of the internet. Maybe Al Gore shouldn't have invented it in the first place :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

I was just using the time frame that is used by climate change advocates. 37x60=2,220 seconds/ 20 seconds = a ratio of 111. Exactly the same as shortening a time frame of 22,220 years to 200 years. I was just using a language that all too many people seem to adopt. :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

Some social influencers/youtubers/internet personalities make a lot of money.
Check out Emma Chamberlain. She is 22 years old and is worth anywhere from $12 million to $50 million (depending on what you read on the internet).

I think youtube and social influencers are like gold miners of the past. Everyone does it hoping to strike it rich. Very few hit it big - either in the gold mines or on the internet.

You would have been better off checking my math first before showing it was exactly the same. I've corrected my post.

Let's see - there's Girl with Dog. She's pretty awesome, gives folks information about different breeds that she grooms, now has her own line of pet-grooming supplies, and provides free grooms to every animal she videos for her social media account. People donate to her channel as a thanks for offering the content, and that money goes to pay for the groom.
She is an influencer.
There's also the Walsh twins, who do cosmetic and skin care reviews and tips and commentary. They're very entertaining, even though many of their products are super high end that I'd never buy, or specific to Europe (since they're in England) and not available here in the states anyway. But they also give tips and tricks and show OTHER influencers' tips and tricks and critique them. They're fun to watch.
Then there's me, who provides unbiased honest reviews for products in exchange for getting the products free (and sometimes a gift card). I do surveys and test products and such. I give permission for my commentary to be used on the product manufacturer's website, or it goes into a marketing research group that helps a manufacturer tweak their marketing or their product (depending on their goal). I'm not super-active in this, but I do participate a few times every year. This is another type of social influencer.
There's also one woman who buys clothing from places like WISH and shows whether or not she got ripped off. It's a little strange but it actually does help folks who don't have a lot of money but want to look fashionable, know which styles, websites, companies, they can safely buy from. She's done a couple of bridal dresses that way, and she's also bought some "mystery boxes" of returned products from Amazon.
Most of it is light and fun to watch, and some folks like to kick in a few bucks to thank them for providing the content. Other folks get paid by the companies who give them things to review (plus they get to keep the product).
