Jimmy Buffett, legendary '''Margaritaville''' singer, dies at 76 (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/jimmy-buffett-legendary-escape-margaritaville-singer-dies-songwriter-rcna103104)

Really enjoyed many of his songs and I know he was beloved by Villagers.

Not a huge fan but he had a few great songs. I was surprised to see that he was one of the world's richest musicians with a net worth of over $1 billion!

I also was not really a huge fan of Jimmy Buffett. More of a Eric Clapton fan.

He was making a lot from license fees. He was also friends with another Buffett (Warren) and purchased Berkshire shares when they were "cheap".

Such a fitting song. His trip around the sun has sadly come to an end.

Personally feel that this is not a good comparison. Clapton was a great guitarist(who was accompanied by other great musicians) and Buffet is more of a sing along type musician/songwriter. What I really do not understand is that Jimmy is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the hall of fame has hip hop and/or rappers in it.

Loved buffet. When I heard of his death this morning, I thought of the very first time we saw and heard him. No "coral reefers" at that time. Neighbors at the time had been up to the Alabama beaches, said there was a guy from the area who sang in some of the beach bars there and was really great. They said his music was very different than what was thought of as "Caribbean" genre. They were excited and called us... said this local Alabama guy was going to be the entertainer at the local mall (Sunrise Mall for any of you who may also be from south east Florida) that weekend. The mall back then usually had live entertainment on weekends, much like that on our squares here. No band, just him, thought he was great and "might go somewhere"....LOL ! Never considered ourselves parrot-heads, but went to many of his concerts over the years. Sorry the "Chillers" are also gone from the Villages, they were as close to Buffet's original arrangements as any "tribute band" we've heard.

Great businessman and legendary poet. Since I am a fan, many of his lyrics live in my head... LOL... I can't look up at a departure/arrival screen in any airport without "changes in latitudes changes in attitudes" playing in my head...LOL ! Yes, as another poster said, it's a day for a cheeseburger, especially for those of us in the paradise we call Florida.

We too greatly miss the Caribbean Chillers at the squares. Was our favorite “happy” music. Buffet wasn’t the greatest singer but he may have been the greatest mood setter entertainer of all time. Have a wonderful eternity in that one particular harbor Jimmy.

I ran into a lot of Parrot Heads at Doggie Doo Run Run. They would go to the parties.

I did give blood at a number of One Blood Parrot Head Blood Drives.

Here's a couple of photos of JB at Great Woods.

You've probably visited our bar in the Parking Lot. We had an 18' flat bed for a stage and had the Baja Brothers playing (until they became JB's opening band) and a replica of Captain Tony's Bar in Key West. I think one of these photos is from one of the very rare "matinee shows" JB played at Great Woods.

Jimmy died as a result of skin cancer that spread to the lymph nodes, resulting in lymphoma. Skin cancer also took the life of Bob Marley, of whom Jimmy was a big fan. Tragic, but a reminder for those of us who dwell in the sun to keep up on those dermatologist appointments.

Great post. Thanks for the memories. Saw JB there & in Anguilla.

Never could get the quarter in the cod’s mouth at Captain Tony’s!

Yup. Bob Marly died from a melanoma that originated under one of his toenails...

Sadly, I've diagnosed two of them over my career...

Bob Marley:

Melanoma
In May 1981, with his health not improving, Marley wished to return to Jamaica. However, his plane was forced to land in Miami and he was rushed to a hospital where he died on May 11, at age 36. Cause of death was the spread of the melanoma to his lungs and brain.

Correct...

"Bob Marley died in 1981 as the result of a metastatic brain tumor. In 1977, a malignant melanoma (skin cancer) was discovered in Marley's toe."

I was a fan until I saw the documentary on Netflix about him.

The guy who started the Parrotheads, and thus kick started Jimmy’s career, fell on hard times.

He got very sick and was homeless, as I recall. Jimmy did nothing for him. I forget the details, but it left me disallusioned about him.

Timothy B. Schmidt (of the Eagles), who was playing with Jimmy Buffet's band at the time, came up with the name at a concert in 1985, after seeing fans with inflatable parrots and Hawaiian shirts... It was a play on words, an homage to the "Dead Heads"...

I can't find anything to support the story that the founder of the Parrot Head Club "kick started" Buffet's career (he already had a thriving career since the mid 70's...), or that he fell on hard times...

Here's a link to the club's history...

I'm a big fan of his music.

I often think of this song when I think of him.

The song has some language that might be objectable to some.
