I would like to buy my husband an old fashioned shave. Does anyone know where you can get one with the hot towels and other goodies? It has been on his bucket list for years.....

There is a barber shop on 441 a bit north of Markets of Marion on the East side of the Hwy. It has a barber pole that you can see from 441; the building runs east - west and the shop is near the east end. When you get a hair cut there, they shave your neck with a straight razor like an old time barber used to do. They probably do straight razor shaves there too.

I'll email my brother, the TV frog, and ask him for the barber to ask for and her phone number. Will get back with the info.

(he didn't mention where her new shop was located, but it can't be too far from TV)

i used to get this in honolulu but was told by an MD friend that i was flirting with danger due to HIV possibilty through the small nicks that you get from this type shave.

I have never liked the idea of someone messing around my face and neck with a straight razor. Have never had one of those "old fashion shaves" and probably won't. I don't even go to a barber shop to get my hair cut. The last time I was in a barber shop was when I was in the Army.....41 years ago.

My last visit to a barber shop was probably 1972. I have one of those DIY home hair cutting kits. Works great!!!

Sorry guys. I just called the number CHUCKINCA posted and was told she was no longer at the shop. I was given another number at which to reach her but that also appears to be incorrect. The mystery thickens.

Reminds me of my 97 year old uncle who shaved this way for as long as I can remember. I will have to ask him next week if he still does shave with the straight razor as his eyesight is not what it used to be.

I used to think when he shaved this way that he had to be very careful. I remember the cup with the shaving cream and the brush he used to put it on his face. The strap he used to sharpen the blade.

IMHO - The closest shave one can get.

I'll ask the frog bro to check it out and get back.

My husband cuts his hair every week with a Flowbee and hasn't been to a barber in 26 years. It is awesome. I just trim his neck with a mustache trimmer.

Quoting Wikipedia:

"Some areas require barbers who provide straight-razor shaving to use a version that employs a disposable blade system. Still other jurisdictions ban the use of all straight razors and barbers use modern disposable blade razors instead. In places such as Australia, New Zealand, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Denver, Boston, Texas and San Diego, however, the use of straight razors is legal."

"Feather Safety Razor Co. Ltd. of Osaka, Japan makes a razor with the same form as a traditional straight, but featuring a disposable blade that can be installed through an injector-type system."

You cut your own hair?.

I keep it short so all I have to do is get a mirror and run the clippers all over the head. I trim around the ears with a mustache trimmer when I do my beard.

http://www.flowbee.com/.

When my Mother-in-law was alive, I used a flowbee to do her hair. She had a hard time breathing and the flowbee kept the hair dust away from her.

I use a flowbee to do the wife's hair now.
