View Full Version : Spectrum Router Disconnects

I have Spectrum internet in Richmond and I have been using the Spectrum WiFi router which has been perfect except it keeps getting disconnected while I am up north. I don't have much on the network - just the Ecobee thermostat, the wireless front door lock and the Wyze doorbell camera - but it was happening even when I didn't have the doorbell camera, or the door lock.

The modem stays connected but the router goes off-line. Fortunately, I have the Empty Nest people and they unplug and plug in the router and then it works for a while - sometimes a month or two, sometimes a few weeks.

I don't have the option of Quantum Fiber where we are. It's either Spectrum or Xfinity.

Up north, I have a Netgear router that I set to reboot automatically once a week just to keep it fresh. It's a setting in the firmware.

One of my neighbors bought their own router. I didn't get a chance to ask why - maybe for reliability or maybe because they have a lot more devices on their network.

Anyway, I was just wondering if someone else had any thoughts on this and maybe some info on how to avoid the router disconnects.

I have Spectrum. I used to have the same issue when we first moved in. Have not for quite a while now. I always suspected that it because we were in a new area and new customers were being connected.

I don't think that would be the case recently here in Richmond. No new homes being built here (for now).

While you are away, put it on a timer to go off then on at something like 1AM.

Have you reported this to Spectrum?

If it was your router that disconnected then Spectrum could blame your equipment. Since it is their router disconnecting from their modem it seems like they would be interested/obligated to make it right.

We didn’t connect to Spectrum until March 2023, haven’t had any problems since we started, but majority of building was completed

Flush dns and reboot every day. Tp link equipment works best. The cable company modem, router was was garbage. 100 dollars for arris/tp link on amazon.

Also use google dns, not the cable company. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Use a batch file.
Ipconfig /release
Ipconfig /flushdns
Ipconfig/renew

A couple of other ideas:

- You should not have to reboot anything every couple of weeks (or even months)
- Can you reboot the modem remotely? This still shouldn't be necessary but if it corrects the problem then at least you could do it yourself rather than asking the management company.
- Is it possible to restart the DHCP server on the modem? Doing this may cause the connected devices, like the router, to "wake up" and talk to the router. Again, this shouldn't be necessary but if it corrects the problem.....

Simple solution is a mechanical timer that cycles power once a day.
Until then, contact Spectrum, ask for a bill credit. If it's out for a week, and you are paying more money for someone to go reset it, then the full month bill amount credit is reasonable. (for every occurrence)

Once I had Spectrum, I promptly returned their router and bought a NetGear router... I saw no reason to pay the monthly rental...

There isn’t a monthly rental on spectrum equipment. It free.

I have the same issue, except I have my own router (TP Link). I don't have this issue UpNorth, so I assume it a Spectrum problem. Streaming TV also buffers more on Spectrum.

The mechanical timer sounds like a good idea. I will try it when I return to TV.

Flush dns and reboot every day.

You can't do that if you are UpNorth for the summer.

Maybe as part of some promo, but not in general. I think they were going to give me the modem free but charge for a router.

Why can’t you reboot via 192.168.0.1 or the modem address? It’s in the router software.

It can be rebooted using the Spectrum app, but once it disconnects you have to do a hard reboot.

My netgear router up north has the ability to set in the firmware to reboot on any schedule you choose. I chose to have it reboot weekly and haven't had an issue with it in years.

I'm pretty sure this router does not allow logging in via the local IP address. You have to use the Spectrum app on your phone. I may be wrong but I haven't tried logging into the router IP.

You are absolutely correct. I just had to replace mine and the newer version only allows access through the app. Kind of sucks because before I could work and name and choose which bw I wanted 2.4/5 to use myself but now the router does it all “automatically”. Not very secure either.

It can be rebooted using the Spectrum app, but once it disconnects you have to do a hard reboot.

I'm assuming you mean that the modem can be rebooted through the Spectrum app but that doesn't help because once the wifi router disconnects you have to do a hard reboot on the wifi router.

I've seen this occasionally with other devices but I've never figured out what causes it. It always seemed like a DHCP hiccup where a DHCP reset occurred in one device but did not register correctly in another. I could not find a setting to change that made any difference so I might have been looking in the wrong place.

Do yourself a favor and buy a good router. We had Spectrum up north and always had strange issues like that until buying an Asus router (the one with 4 antennae). You need to keep the Spectrum unit because you still need the modem functionality. But you disable the wi-fi on the Spectrum unit and plug in your new router to one of the ports. We had much better range and reliability with the Asus.

I've had Spectrum for almost 4 years here in Village of Marsh Bend.

My current Internet access device is a box that has the modem and router built-in; ie one box for both. I do not use the WiFi from Spectrum. Instead I have a TP-Link mesh network for secure and guest WiFi throughout my Iris Designer home. No dead spots. There are 5 mesh hubs spread throughout the home, one even in the garage.

In those 3.5 years, have only lost Internet a few times. And only a sort time with Spectrum doing maintenance or fixing a problem. They recently sent me a warning that my service would be down due to an accident, and to expect repairs within 2 hours.

Another time about a year ago, they discovered a problem with our service, and would need to send a tech out to investigate. They came and replaced my modem/router with a newer model.

If your Spectrum equipment is giving you problems, schedule a service call, have them come out, and make sure the equipment is ok.

Why guess? Log in to the router and look in the error log to see which component is failing. You shouldn’t have to reboot a router for months/years, but should do it every so often. If you don’t know how to get get into the router, ask your ISP or the router manufacturer to go into it and see what the actual problem is. Add more people to the network will not bring it down, power outage will actually reboot the router for you, nor will more construction in the area bring you router down, unless they cut the line.

I have a Roku TV and HP/Windows 10 computer. Spectrum is my internet service provider. I was using WIFI for both the TV and computer. The computer would frequently lose connection while the TV maintained the connection. Thought it might be my computer that was at fault so I switched to using an ethernet cable connection to my computer. Computer now maintains connection with the ethernet cable. TV maintains connection with WIFI.

I had the same issue up north with charter. I went with a timer that turns off at 1am and turns back on 15 minutes later. If you get one make sure it has a battery backup or it will not have the right time when you loose power.

We're still under construction in TV, but I was trying to decide on fiber, Spectrum or Xfinity. I have Spectrum up north, and over the past 8 years I've never had a problem with disconnects unless it was a full Spectrum outage (power loss, etc.). I probably power cycle the modem a couple times a year.

It’s free for us too, though we aren’t happy with it since getting it last December. We have a significant lag at times, issues with streaming services, and quite often lips aren’t synced with speech, which we’re assuming is due to the lag. We are thinking about buying our own router, and are hoping we get Quantum Fiber eventually here in DeLuna. 🤞🏻

Syncing of lips and speech is usually app related. Which apps do you see that on?

Where is your router and TV located? My router is above the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Free meaning that you don't see a separate charge, but free in that the price is in the base price so that you pay for it, whether you have it or not, and don't see a charge

And then when you use your own, there is less assets in the field for which the base cost is collecting money, so spectrum makes more money. .

still free??

Ok, it's in the price. Currently paying $69.99 for 300mb on my second year "deal". No extra charges/fees. I have 2 ASUS routers packed from my house before moving to the villages. The Spectrum hardware has been flawless with great range everywhere in and around the home.

Zero issues with Spectrum here, although I only use their modem.

I'm using a Ubiquiti UXG-Pro for my router and security gateway. I have the interior / exterior of the house covered with a few ap's that work very well and are lightning fast.

When I switched to Spectrum the installer told me to keep Spectrums Modem but to purchase my own Router as the one supplied by Spectrum was junk. The first day I found the Router wifi could not reach my sprinkler control in the garage. I went to Best Buy purchased a Netgear Router and have had no problem since. Installer said don't pay less than $100.00 or more than $150.00 for a Router.
Returned Router and pay $5.00 less a month

Same. Except I came to that conclusion on my own... I never had a Spectrum installer... I went to one of their stores and they handed me the equipment...

Within a week, I turned in the router and replaced it with my current Netgear router...

A lot of nice router/modern stories and suggestions the OP may not be able to resolve issue until his return.
