View Full Version : Snowbirds Need to Decompress

Their back!!!!!! Snowbirds spending 3-6 months up north have to readjust to a faster pace of life up north. Once they come back they need to decompress to a slower pace of life here. This takes a little time, probably about 1 month. Its time to chill out snowbirds for your own safety, and ours.
While riding my bike today, my wife and I were passed by a speed racer going over the chitty chatty bridge. You know the bright colored dressed bikers who just want to go fast. He passed us, flew by whispering out of my way, and then about 2 miles down the path, we stopped to see him lying on the ground and being helped to his feet by the people whose car he ran into. 911 was called and there was a good dent in the backside of the car, hopefully he was okay.
While crossing the Lily bridge there was a biker in front of us crossing over the highway, a golf car crossed the solid line to pass all of us just before a corner. The biker shouted something and we proceeded on. Once into the Brownwood parking lot, the biker proceeded to chase the golf car down as he was going to the gas station. We did not stay for the conversation. But it wasn't going to be pleasant.
While resting at the Eisenhower Rec. Center, there was a women painting the door so the side door was being used. A woman came hurrying in carrying a bucket and a pilates ball and decided to hit the automatic door opener. The door opened and hit the painter in the head. And the women scurried into the side door.
All of this happened in one morning, and we figured out that the snowbirds had returned. Please be warned to watch out for the faster paced snowbirds. They need to decompress and adjust to the pace down here before more injuries occur. You have been warned, they may also need an attitude adjustment, please give them time to re-adjust.

Still 90+ degrees in Central Florida and one week after Labor Day. In S. Florida "snow bird" season starts Thanksgiving week end. Sounds more like someone in the sun too long would do. Snowbirds and tourists are why Florida does not have a state income tax.

I'm sure they had a giant sign on their back that said "Snow Bird", which is how you knew that they weren't one of the cool people, who are stuck living in The Villages, 365 days a year.

Little early to start attacking snowbirds, since most haven’t arrived yet. So my guess is you were addressed by a full time resident biking, passing you, because they could, and did.
Looks like you have started posting in 2021, and hoped that you have learned not all issues are caused by those who choose to own more than one home, can come and go as often as they like, keep our economy running, Pay higher taxes, without taking up full time space.
But to blame snowbirds, for your issue just proves, you have more to learn.

"The younger, more sophisticated and savvy folks seem to be the new comers down south.
The middle of TV seems to have a lot of successful folks, fairly new to retirement.
By the time you get to the Northern/Historic area, you have the much older folks who moved to TV when it wasn't much more than a trailer park. These people seem to want the world to return to the way it was in 70's and they rail against anything new, while they bemoan the passing of the "good old days", when Harold Schwartz roamed Spanish Springs."

Snow bird here. We're not home yet although we will make sure we wear a white "S" on our backs when we do. We are 8 months at home in The Villages and 4 months in New England. By the time those 4 months are over I cannot wait to get home.
Regarding time to decompress, it does take us a bit of time to get back into a slower pace. A few rounds of golf usually takes care of that.

Can't recognize a snowbird? Easiest thing in the world. Most folks wear shorts here. Check the legs and arms. Tanned arms + lily-white legs = SNOWBIRD. Not all, of course. But the odds certainly favor that.
These threads in the fall are as predictible as the sun coming up. A small core group of curmudgeons usually need to vent about increased traffic, boneheaded drivers, longer wait times at restaurants, prime-time tee times becoming harder to obtain, etc. etc. All true, of course, at least to an extent. But what some folks don't seem to realize is that the 'birds overwhelmingly are either property owners here in TV themselves, or are renting a home owned by ANOTHER property owner: in BOTH cases that means that the amenity fee for that home is paid for them just as it is for us who enjoy our little slice of heaven here year-round.
In other words, the 'birds aren't taking what is rightfully ours. Not in any way, shape, or form. They are merely claiming what they have every right to claim.
Interesting thing. One of the reasons we decided to buy here, was our experience as renters. Almost to a person the locals were warm and welcoming people, more than happy to engage us in conversation and share what they knew about life in TV. Today when we encounter 'birds we like to engage them in conversation. Admittedly some are a bit circumspect at first (they read the negative comments too, I suppose) but they warm up quickly once they realize we don't hate them or see them as interlopers of one kind or other.
Hopefully others make the same sort of effort. Makes things more pleasant for all of us.

Snowbirds aren't back yet. I've seen no increase in traffic. I've observed a lot of families visiting lately. The other reason I know is our foursome has yet to be hit upon while we're on the green and that only happens from late October thru March. It's just a fact!:throwtomatoes:

I spend 4-5 months north and the balance in TV. As far as the pace of life, if things got any slower in rural NY State, they wouldn't be moving at all. I have to "gear up" not "slow down" when I get to TV. Of course, if I'd remember not to turn left onto the roundabouts, in my golf cart, things would feel so sped up for me. Ah well....just another dumb snowbird. What do I know?

I use the tell tale sign of those facial cigarette looking burn marks from the dermatologist to identify a local. A long term local will have those burns combined with mile high white zinc covered ears.

I get really tired of all the snowbird bashing and blaming that goes on. Why would snowbirds be faster paced? I am retired as are most snowbirds and I am an expert at doing nothing slowly. While you guys are suffering the extreme Florida summer heat or running from air conditioner to air conditioner, we snowbirds are enjoying taking it easy outdoors with balmy weather and refreshing breezes. I think the non-snowbirds are just jealous because we have the best of both worlds! It's not us who need your suggested attitude adjustment.

I can go into about every village and spot some snowbird houses not all but more than few. The weeds are taller than the bushes and some approach the roof line, tell tell sign.

Its not just Snowbirds, its residents in general.
Yesterday at the grocery store I was in the checkout line, and holding two cold drinks in my hand and one other item, so I stand in line for the cashier because I had cash and the self checkouts were card only--and there were a couple people in front of me, and the lady right in front of me had just a few items and she put her items on the conveyor belt, and I took one of the item separators, placed it on the belt after her items and set my drinks down. She then said to me in a very snotty voice "If you're in that big of a hurry, just go ahead of me" and walked around to stand about 5 ft behind me. I looked at her and I said excuse me? and she said "I don't like it when someone crowds me, I got to have at least 5 ft of personal space." I told her I wasn't trying to crowd her I just wanted to set my drinks down cause they were cold, and I stepped back and I said "Knock yourself out."
She looked back and said "Knock YOURself out. I got to have space around me."
The Villages is supposed to be the friendliest Hometown, well I don't think so-- sometime in the last 10 years or so it's gotten the rudest most belligerent types of people I have met in a long time-- not since I lived in New York.

People who keep saying that the Northern end of the villages is an area of older people. Do you think original and secondary owners live forever? In my neighborhood, and most of the adjoining neighborhoods in the Spanish Springs area, is comprised of many, if not most villagers in their 50s and 60s. The original owners and the second owners have sold or passed away. People in the southern sections make assumptions. You know what that makes you?

What I have seen in many areas, not just the Villages, is that many off them area arrogant and think they own the road. Many times they ride 2 abreast and block off traffic from passing, this is why some off them get hit by cars.

Politely disagree. Live in the Spanish Springs area. New growth in the south does not affect us(too far away) and we have no reason to south of Brownwood and hardly go there. We have more here than we really need,

I live north of 466.
I've been coming to visit TV since 2012, I purchased my first home in 2019, my second in 2020 and have lived here full time for almost 3. I turned 56 last month.

That’s a pretty big assumption on your part. No way you could know without asking if they are snowbirds or not. Serious bikers are not out for a joyride. They are out for serious exercise. Not in a hurry, but rather staying fit through exercise is their way to relax. Until they encounter some pesky driver who puts their life in danger. You don’t know who’s mistake it was when the biker and car collided. Interesting your criticism is about 3 people with intentions for a good workout.

Same for us up North. Trees are starting to turn, temps in 70’s with low humidity, shopping is much closer as is our church. So many places to walk and bike with nothing to be in a hurry for. It’s simply beautiful. TV is nice in the winter, but in regards to the environment can get quite boring to be there all year. Especially oppressive in the summer.

Amusing stories, but your assumption that these people are snowbirds seems unfounded. I hope you don’t work as a police detective.

I am a snow bird and I find I have to adjust to a much more lively life style when I get back to the Villages. I find it more boring up north. I miss all the golf, I miss my golf cart and rides every day, I miss all the live music and the squares. And I find it funny that you think all rude people are snow birds. Just saying !!

The golf car that passed the biker going over the highway bridge came close to him in a no pass zone and the women going to workout looked at the painted and then still pressed the auto door............
These 3 workout people were not focused properly or bad things would not have happened. Some answers just call them stupid people, inconsiderate is a better word,

This is my 3rd time as a renter in TV, I rent from mid-September to early April. I chose this time frame so that I can experience the busy period when the population in TV is at its greatest. I have still not decided if I am going to make TV my final stop when I retire in a year or two based on what I have learned during my previous two rental periods. It’s a shame that there is a certain segment of the TV population that always finds something to complain about while pointing a finger at snowbirds or part-time renters. Is life for you that boring that you feel the need to seek out, identify and document the drawbacks of being a snowbird? Instead of complaining, how about making an effort to communicate with them, you just might make a new friend.

The weather here is absolutely gorgeous...75* and sunny with a beautiful cool breeze.
Took a leisurely 10 mile Ebike ride in the country today.
Rode past dozens of pumpkin patches, acres of sunflowers, fresh Cranberry boggs, and apple orchards beyond belief..literally dripping with apples hanging almost on the ground.
Fall is definitely here, the leaves are turning more each day !

Which category of cool per your own declaration a short time ago ?
"The younger, more sophisticated and savvy folks seem to be the new comers down south.
The middle of TV seems to have a lot of successful folks, fairly new to retirement.
By the time you get to the Northern/Historic area, you have the much older folks who moved to TV when it wasn't much more than a trailer park. These people seem to want the world to return to the way it was in 70's and they rail against anything new, while they bemoan the passing of the "good old days", when Harold Schwartz roamed Spanish Springs."
Somehow it seems like the Historic section of TV Land just got prejudiced against through no fault of its own.

Drinks and music at the squares should help.

I don't mind the increased traffic. I mind that the state or local governments do NOT plan well enough in advance to provide the NECESSARY extra lanes for the winter and as the Florida population is growing rapidly.

Actually, as far as sunburned ears go, I try to wear a hat with an all-around brim as much as possible. I try to wear a long-sleeved shirt as much as possible. Where I let down my guard and make a mistake is in getting too much sun on the back of my hands. It is hard to wear gloves when out in the sun all of the time.

In my neighborhood, and most of the adjoining neighborhoods in the Spanish Springs area, is comprised of many, if not most villagers in their 50s and 60s. The original owners and the second owners have sold or passed away. People in the southern sections make assumptions. You know what that makes you?

Same for us up North. Trees are starting to turn, temps in 70’s with low humidity, shopping is much closer as is our church. So many places to walk and bike with nothing to be in a hurry for. It’s simply beautiful. TV is nice in the winter, but in regards to the environment can get quite boring to be there all year. Especially oppressive in the summer.
This summer has been disgustingly hot, Hot, and HOT !!! Lots of "feels like" temperatures over 100 deg and often with no wind with blasting sun. If I play any sports in the morning, I sweat from my shirt down to my shorts and even my socks get damp. Next summer, if the is no Covid, I am going to play only inside with A/C type sports or inside classes. According to climate scientists we have had record world HEAT so far this summer and they predict even hotter next year. I can't take that anymore. I can't enjoy summer sports in Florida anymore. It is that time of year. Over the past couple of weeks we have noticed an increase in traffic and larger crowds at the squares, church and for our weekly classes. The walk ons at the golf courses have been clipped a bit too. We were bumped because we had a threesome last week. Maybe, the hot weather up North or school itself kicked this one off early? Maybe it’s the surge in new homes? It doesn’t matter, buckle up, reserve your restaurant seats and plan ahead as much as you can.

Sorry, but riders legally be on the road. Imagine them being on a cart path, doing 15mph then could you pass 20 riders……NO.
taking one lane isn’t a problem, the other day, on BV, 20 plus, took both lanes. At first I thought they were passing, which still shouldn’t have taken 2 lanes. 25 plus cars behind them doing 18 mph. That was wrong. It was at best two clubs try to prove something, and neither had the ability to do better than the other. At best they should have been embarrassed, proving their abilities were in their heads, not in there legs

2. Leaving the place to thh frogs for 1/2 the year? but but, I thought (not necessarily from you), that when they were gone, the snowbirds were renting to dozens per house at a time????

Didn't Jimmy Buffet have a song about changes in LATITUDE causing changes in ATTITUDE?
Yes. Indeed he did. While avoiding flying golf balls from people not concerned about physically harming others or other golf ettiquit practices, I remember that snowbirds do help slow the traffic down. Since I don't follow the herd mentality of having to eat at 4 pm or checking the mailbox precisely at a given time or grocery shopping in the same manner I do like when they are here. Actually living here near Spanish Springs is the least busiest year round!:MOJE_whot:

That IS the way I feel and also, why hurry when you are retired? Does that keep the Grim Reaper away? But, many TV Landers drive like their hair is on fire.
That's something I've been able to break since coming here. Living by a clock. I've actually never seen so many keyed up people in all my life. Most seem to not have a clue what time management means. Can't leave the house accordingly to make your tee time without endangering others with your golf cart. I've can't count how many times people ask the starters how fast the groups in front of them play because they have to be somewhere in an hour and a half or they get upset and rude if someone joins in on their threesome. Seriously?:ohdear:

Hate to burst your bubble......Very few if ANY snowbirds come to FL for the culture!! .....We are not trying to get away from our culture. That "up north" culture we enjoy is why we have two homes! The ONLY reason I have a home in FL is for warm winters, golf and pickleball.
That wouldn't be going out on a limb at all.
I believe you 100% on why you do what you do.
But to say very few if any????? Thinking you may not even be close to right unless you are defining culture only as the cultural arts.

😤
Hey There New Friend, that I've yet to meet, but hope to one day soon~
Don't read too much into that nutcase. That is all she is!
I worked in mental health and there are some real loonybins out there!
But then, there are people who adhere to their psychiatrists and mental health specialist plan for them, such as daily doses of medication too control their public phobias and outbursts.
All that I'm saying is... don't paint us all with a broad brush. Most of us have a ball in this world of happiness and excellent fun and sunshine.
Most of us will really, really enjoy what you bring to the party.
Smile. WELCOME ABOARD.
REMEMBER- IF a person is a "meany" (or fill in the blank) at 30 years old, their personality is pretty much set by that age. That's the way they PAN-OUT at 60, unfortunately for elbow room lady who is clearly OFF her meds.

Although I suspect the OP’s issues were probably not caused by snowbirds, the migration has begun. Simple way to tell is to check the price of flights to/from Orlando from the Northeast. Midweek flights cost approximately three times as much to Orlando as the do from Orlando. Lots of very full planes heading in the Villages direction and lots of room available on the planes going north.

Restaurants are too crowded because too many people go at the same time. We seldom eat before 7:30 and rarely have a long wait.
I know it's tough to stay up past 9pm. lol
Same here, but our time is 7:00... When we're done eating, the restaurant is emptying out...

I can't take that anymore. I can't enjoy summer sports in Florida anymore. Summer will likely NEVER exist for me outside anymore here in Florida.
........I am jealous of all you SNOWBIRDS, so enjoy yourselves, I wish I could be there.
I hear the weather is much better in the Carolinas and in Tennessee...

Yep. lol. We went to Caraba's one night last January about 8pm. By the time we were done with dinner and a couple beers, they were sweeping the floors.
But we didn't have to wait for a table.

Summer will likely NEVER exist for me outside anymore here in Florida.

All comes down to attitude.
My wife is a tropical critter who whenever the temp hits 85 or above is complaining about how HOT it is. I have to remind her of A)what month it is and B) our address, also that we moved here voluntarily to escape -30 and snowdrifts up to our chin. Helps for a little while. But she still insists on hiding under an umbrella whenever we're out on the golf course. She also has this long, thin ice bag that she carries around in a cooler of ice and wraps around her neck from time to time.
I on the other hand embrace the heat. I actually feared moving here because I spent 72 years up on that tundra called Minnesota and had heard all the horror stories about Florida in the summer. But once here I found out I loved it! Odd thing--our part of Minnesota actually got more 100 degree days in a year than does TV (of course it gets oodles more subzero days too). But once here my arthritis just about disappeared and found that a quart bottle of ice water is enough for the first three miles of a six-mile walk in any weather, and a bottle of iced tea (Publix is the turnaround point) is sufficient for the trip back. Golf is great on any summer afternoon--just drive up and any course you pick is usually wide open after 2 pm or so.
And my tan is great!

Keep in mind that a lot of kitchens prepare food far in advance of the prime dining time. Come late and you can expect to get some things that may have been sitting around for hours. Especially true in Mexican and Chinese restaurants. Our neighbor won't go to lunch at 2pm for that very reason. All may depend on what you order.

This has not been our experience. We never eat before 7 and our food has always been good.

It’s easy to mistake a Newer Villager for a Snowbird. Both deal with assimilation issues. The newer variable though is the population boom in the Villages in general. The roads are more congested than usual for this time of year. It probably adds up to several contributors.

I just migrated down Monday of this week. This is the earliest I've ever come down, by about a month, and it's busier than I thought it would be. At least, the non-Villages roads, like 466A, was, but those apartments by Lowe's look to be done, or closer to it, so maybe that's the reason.
I'm here without a car for a month, so I am using my golf cart exclusively, and the MMPs are very quiet compared to the cooler months. It's very nice! I took the cart to the neighborhood Walmart on 466A, and there were empty parking spots all over the lot, and plenty of open self-checkout registers. Also very nice!
Maybe because this is my 6th winter I haven't screwed up to badly yet, although I did catch myself trundling along with the turn signal clicking away. I hate that. I have to wire something up so I can see that right turn signal better in my peripheral vision.
When I do get my car, I will have to be on hyper-alert not to forget that my CRV is not allowed on the MMP. I really hope I don't forget that.

Uncharacteristic post, surprised snowbirds and snowflakes are not being accused of causing climate change by creating carbon footprint traveling between homes?
This hysteria over normal summertime warmth is bewildering. There is no climate change crisis, but just a climate alarmism crisis. To make it even worse, the media refuses to acknowledge we're in a 9-year cooling trend.

We got here last Thursday evening and are surprised at how uncrowded everything is. I suppose we are still remembering last winter, but we have been coming throughout the year, at various times for many years, and right now things seem unusually uncluttered. T times are aplenty, no problem getting a swim lane in the sports pools, no wait for lunch at Tropical Smoothie, Publix almost empty, etc….. we could get used to this : )

I’m a newbie (just closed on my TV house in October) but I’ve been in Illinois ever since closing getting moved out of my Illinois house.
I have looked for stats and can’t find them.
What percentage of TV residents are snowbirds?
And when do they (in general) appear?
A friend of mine just checked on my house in TV and said that the traffic today was unimaginably horrible.
Have the snowbirds arrived?

Snowbirds and seasonal residents have begun to arrive but the really high season for snowbirds and seasonal residents is January, February and March. I have never seen heavy traffic within The Villages even during high season.
