It has been demonstrated through the IA programs, they use a large part of just what is present on the web to synthesize, condense what is there, IA has no critical thinking, garbage in garbage out, If there were a great abundance of the web articles were about how healthy it is to stand on your head in a corner for 15 minutes a day thinking about grasshoppers that would have the herd thinking, believing and expounding how much it has helped them

What amazes me is that even after admitting they do this, some extremists still deny it.

What amazes me is some will look past simple logic to find a conspiracy. Of course Google manipulates the results and we all WANT them to do that. Otherwise, what is returned would be a mess! In various articles Google has tried to explain this but hey, that just gets in the way of the conspiracy.

Google returns the results that match the search terms. Don’t like the results? Use better search terms.

Interesting note: the non-Google, independent search engine that can be trusted returns a very similar set of results. (perhaps google has secretly taken them over!)

True, except for the bolded part. That was previously true as well up until the Ukraine war started and DDG joined in with other Big Tech to decide what you should be allowed to read or not.

duckduckgo-down-ranks-russia-misinformation (https://technical.ly/civic-news/duckduckgo-down-rank-russia-misinformation/)

That being said, DDG is still way better that Google for search as it's (at least for now) still private, and has a quality layout including news/social media results/images/etc that are still lacking in engines like Brave that don't filter.

Try changing your search criteria. Your results will be based on a) your search criteria, b) your previous searches to determine what you are actually interested in, c) most recent search results from around the web, d) most popular result (meaning what people have actually clicked on, not merely the list that they read), and various and sundry other criteria.

Even a 5 year old know that these companies do this. You do know that people wrote the code to do your searches, determine what type of ads are displayed on your screen, and how to manipulate the searched data.
I worked at a web based company that looked at each of your initial packets of data when you go out to certain websites (financial, online sales) and modified a part of your data to tell the website you were going to if you were a bad person or a good person. (This is very high level. This technology that can dynamically identify new fraud patterns as they emerge). It would be very easy for a developer to place a flag on your data saying you had a certain affiliation based on your prior searches, or you have been flagged by another website that you were a bad person/fraud.
Don’t be naive! This happens all the time. Beware of your page content and you will know what I mean.

Frustrating? Yes. But criminal? Hardly. There really hasn't been a time in our history when information presented to Joe Public, at least to a certain extent, HASN'T been sifted or cherry-picked by media to present a certain face. Search "yellow journalism" for just one example of such activity going back to the late 19th century. But that is just one example among many others, and the yellow journalists of that time faced plenty of opposition from news sources printing opposing views.

The issue here however is not so much that a Google search is apt to yield results heavily skewed in a certain direction (that has been known for quite some time) but that a monopoly on disseminated information means that it has become progressively harder and harder to find information on the internet that might contradict the stuff most readily available in a Google search. This seems to be the case most often when it relates to "social" issues. Try searching Google for any information that contradicts the accepted line du jour on just about any social issue and this will become obvious. The problem is that, when you're the only game in town, you can pretty successfully slam the door on any info. that you might not want Joe Public to see.

Google of course is not the "only game in town" when it comes to the availability of information on the internet. But it is far and away the largest. In 2018 Google handled no less than 90.8% of all internet searches (Jeff Desjardins, "This Chart Reveals Google’s True Dominance Over the Web", visualcapitalist dot com, April 20, 2018) and I doubt that that dominance has shrunk in the past five years. Additionally, Google owns and controls the content of Youtube, "the second biggest social media in the world, with over 2.7 billion active users" (demandsage dot com, February 2023 statistics). Finally, Google and FaceBook, the LARGEST social media platform on theplanet, which though ostensibly independent of one another, have formed a "partnership": ("Facebook and Google announced that they will be partnering to bring Facebook's retargeting platform, Facebook Exchange, to Google's Doubleclick." (bigfootprintdigital dot com, Oct. 25, 2022). All this means that Google, through its search engine and control over YouTube alone, controls what is available to nearly 3 BILLION people worldwide and if one adds in its influence over FaceBook, their dominance is huge--AND scary--AND undeniable.

I have begun collecting print books relating to issues, primarily social, that offer more complete pictures of those issues than what is available online. These will go to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren when that time comes. But even this, due to the surging popularity of e-books, is becoming harder and harder to accomplish. And how long will it take for even these books to be deemed "undesirable" and worthy of censure/destruction?

I don't know. Time will tell, I guess, and there seems to be less and less of that all the time.

People really only need to use their eyes, ears and brains to observe the manipulation. Watch any Congressional hearing and/or session on any source. Now granted, one must be willing to do this WITHOUT your own agenda, but, if you do, THEN pose a question to Google using ANY phrasing, ANY word combination of your choice regarding what you have just seen with your own two eyes and heard with your own two ears and determine for yourself the bias level that exists. Then do the same on several other search engines and check the results! It’s a simple experiment but the differences will likely amaze you! I understand that those that desperately want a certain result will use whatever means necessary to justify the obvious bias but that can’t be helped. TRUTH will out.

If the tax tables were more progressive like in the 1950s we would have no need to break up big corporations or wealthy individuals. Taxes would have done that automatically, but the super-rich weaseled their way into the Federal government and changed the tax tables to favor the rich in about 2000 and around 2010. Very true. The problem is that today most of the sources are so good at slanting their articles a certain way, by presenting what they present in a certain way, that our opinions are swayed without even being conscious of the fact.

It doesn't have to be written (or spoken) words. Most print articles appearing online these days have a picture next to the headline. Ever wonder why so many of them have the subject of the article pictured in a very unfavorable manner? A headline slanted a certain way accompanied by an unflattering picture next to that headline can solidify the opinion of the reader of the article a certain way before Word One of the article is ever even read. Happens all the time.

Another example: say two articles present precisely the same information, nearly word-for-word. Say that the article concerns a retiring public figure. The first article refers to the subject as a "venerable statesman" while the second might refer to the subject as an "aging politician. Don't know about the rest of you, but to me, "venerable statesman" conjures up the mental of image of, say, Sir Winston Churchill. Aging politician? Teddy Kennedy.

There are many other ways our opinions are swayed. These are two of the most obvious. But don't doubt that swaying one way or the other for a minute. And it is happening to all of us.

And that explains exactly what is happening when you do a google search.

On the other hand, you COULD use an ad blocker, and just not see those ads unless "victoria secret ads" are what you're looking for.

In addition - don't be surprised if, within the next week or two, you start seeing ads right here on Talk of the Villages from lingerie companies.

Why? Because those words exist within recent posts. That's how Adsense works. You should look that up, if you don't know what it is.

I too don’t like the search results I get from Google. Always seems to put me in a marketplace. Maybe I have my browser set up wrong. All I know is that BING gives me the results I want. Different strokes…….. works for me

I don't get ads from anyone on google search, UNLESS I click the "shopping" category. When I do that, it's because I'm actively seeking ads.

If I type in "florida long-neck turtle" I don't get ads for TMNT toys. I get links to Wikipedia, various agriculture and animal websites, some links to pest control websites, and an option to see thousands of images of florida long-neck turtles.
Oh, watching those long-necked turtles is about as relaxing as watching grasshoppers fly around a milo field. Decipher that one for an ADDITIONAL 10 bonus shopping points!

Yes, you've set your default to the wrong thing. Either that or you're using google to search for products that are commonly sold, more than they're discussed. Google will return the "most likely" results based on what other people use that phrase for, and what you have used it for in the past, and what you USUALLY use google for (the default).

So for example:

If your last year was 80% looking up things you wanted to buy from Walmart - then the next time you type in "kitchen table" you are likely to find ads for kitchen tables - with Walmart somewhere at the top of the list, including some "sponsored" options.

If your last year was 80% looking up woodworking crafts and places to buy wood stains and brushes, then the next time you type in "kitchen table" you are likely to find instructional resources for crafting kitchen tables, including stores like Michaels and Lowes as resources to buy raw materials from.

If you last year was 80% looking up "politics involving the Brazilian rain forests" then your next "kitchen table" result might very well be some political stories about how the Brazilian rain forest is being decimated by people who want to make kitchen tables with exotic materials.

My source is the Google source code; the parts that are open source, for my own perusal, and a friend who works for Google for the rest. Unless you've read it or know someone personally who actually works with it, you'll know only what your selection of search results will tell you.

Much of the Google source code is open source. Some is proprietary.

Soooo, now I understand why you have a “researched” opinion about every single thing on this site. ..

The search engine duckduckgo is a terrific alternative to Google. Duckduckgo does not retain your searches and does not data-mine your information. The searches are clean. Much better than Google. I've used it for many years.

True that MOST people have closed minds about many or most subjects, but that's not everyone. Some people do NOT fall into 2 major groups of thought and they are capable of changing their minds after researching a subject. In other words, all opinions are NOT fixed in STONE.

If the tax tables were more progressive like in the 1950s we would have no need to break up big corporations or wealthy individuals. Taxes would have done that automatically, but the super-rich weaseled their way into the Federal government and changed the tax tables to favor the rich in about 2000 and around 2010. And now the US is racing toward a Dictatorship of the rich with no middle class.

The rich paid less taxes in the 50's than they do today. I've shown you this, time and time again (via data from the IRS), yet you keep repeating the same nonsense over and over again...

I hear that Elon Musk has lost control over Twitter AKA- - - X (now there IS an imaginative name). Bet he would like to sell it.

That's ridiculous. The number of active users is WAY up since Musk took over, and he is making it more profitable in spite of left leaning activists attempting to scare advertisers. I agree the new name is not what I would have chosen, but Musk is smarter than me, so I'm sure it was well thought out. He has no interest in selling AFAIK, and thankfully, it is one of the few places left online where free speech is still respected. Kudos to Elon.

As I hear it, the X (marks the spot) users are way up because there are NO user standards or ANY STANDARDS so X is a backward-leaning institution that acts like the wild WEST. lots of fights and barroom brawls, but little sophistication.

Since I liked the politeness of the "please". I would call the rich the upper 10% of wealthy people. 1 % would be the super-rich like Musk and Jeff Bezos.
.....The 1st part about taxes........After WW2 the top tax bracket paid something like 70 or 80 % of their income. The rich had ways of getting around that so that the average person in the top bracket probably paid about 40%. And what happened in 2000 and 2010 was that on both occasions the top income bracket got their % dropped down. That has been widely reported on - just Google it.

Not sure what [/s] means. Must be a Russian code. But, I could reiterate that since CNN is a straight-up, middle-of-the-road, normal TV channel that goes out of its way to present BOTH slightly left-of-center and slightly right-of-center viewpoints on each issue, anyone that has a problem with CNN must be either FAR right or Far left

CNN is not slightly anything, very far left and often called with truth the Communist news network.

Yes, they know that I used THEIR search engine to search for Florida long-neck turtles. I mean, it's their search engine, they kind of need to know what I'm typing into the buffer if I expect them to give me an answer.

What they don't get from me, is ad revenue.
